We broke some teeth on that problem for sometime before finding info in our Adaptec manual to the effect that while one has a IDE controller in the system it is impossible to boot of an SCSI device. I think most of you will only be using SCSI devices and so not have come accross this problem much. I am running FreeBSD 2.0.5 (off the cdrom) on my Gateway 2000 Liberty, a DX4/100 laptop. My network is BNC. I have not been able to find ANYONE who has successfully used the zp driver for BNC, just people who claim they have no problems with UTP but no luck with BNC. It seems that the FreeBSD claim that the 3Com 3c589 is supported in 2.0.5, is, to put it mildly, premature for the BNC case. This is most disappointing because this card is not cheap, and I bought it specifically because of the claim. Please, can this get on the list for 2.1? I will volunteer to help all I can in tracking down what is going wrong. It's been a long weekend (note the time) but trial and error is always like that. I >finally< have wrestled my 3c589 into working BNC. I went over to the Linux 3c589_cs.c driver and read it (line by line) against FreeBSD's /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/if_zp.c. In doing so, I discovered some things Linux was doing that FreeBSD was not. This leads to the following patch to FreeBSD's /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/if_zp.c. My original of that source file came from the 2.0.5 cdrom. Here is the single diff-section patch: ######################################################################## *** if_zp.c Mon Jul 31 00:47:22 1995 --- if_zp.c.orig Sun Jul 30 17:42:19 1995 *************** *** 1069,1082 **** if (!(ifp->if_flags & IFF_ALTPHYS) && (sc->ep_connectors & BNC)) { #endif #ifdef ZP_DEBUG ! printf("START TRANSCEIVER"); #endif /* ZP_DEBUG */ - GO_WINDOW(0); - /* Set the xcvr */ - outw(BASE + EP_W0_ADDRESS_CFG, 3 << 14); - GO_WINDOW(2); outw(BASE + EP_COMMAND, START_TRANSCEIVER); - GO_WINDOW(1); DELAY(1000); } #if defined(__NetBSD__) || defined(__FreeBSD__) --- 1069,1077 ---- if (!(ifp->if_flags & IFF_ALTPHYS) && (sc->ep_connectors & BNC)) { #endif #ifdef ZP_DEBUG ! printf("START TRANCEIVER"); #endif /* ZP_DEBUG */ outw(BASE + EP_COMMAND, START_TRANSCEIVER); DELAY(1000); } #if defined(__NetBSD__) || defined(__FreeBSD__) ######################################################################## This patch is not elegant but it is enough to make BNC work without affecting UTP. I confess to being a total novice as far as the procedure for submitting bug fixes. If I have not given enough information for someone to handle getting this fix in, please just let me know. I can't resist quoting the comment from the Linux source file that made me first think I had found the answer: /* This is vital: the transceiver used must be set in the resource configuration register. It took me many hours to discover this. */ I know the feeling. sts From owner-freebsd-bugs Sun Jul 30 23:57:49 1995 Return-Path: bugs-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id XAA08750 for bugs-outgoing; Sun, 30 Jul 1995 23:57:49 -0700 Received: from mpp.minn.net (mpp.Minn.Net [204.157.201.242]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id XAA08743 ; Sun, 30 Jul 1995 23:57:46 -0700 Received: (from mpp@localhost) by mpp.minn.net (8.6.11/8.6.9) id BAA00940; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 01:57:38 -0500 From: Mike Pritchard Message-Id: <199507310657.BAA00940@mpp.minn.net> Subject: Re: SCSI Tape bug. Since I don't have access to anything really fancy or state of the art (just an old Archive 2150s), I can't verify if the above fix corrects some of the other "odd" SCSI tape bugs that have been reported lately. I don't think it's a question of the boot blocks. It's a matter of the BIOS chosing the IDE(s) as drives 0x80 and 0x81, and trying to boot only off drives 0 and 0x80. However, you could disable the IDE(s) in the BIOS and should get the SCSI adapter hook its drives with SCSI ID(s) 0 and 1 in place for the BIOS drives 0x80 and 0x81. You won't be able to use the IDE(s) from DOS then, but it should be possible to use them from FreeBSD. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-bugs Mon Jul 31 05:24:44 1995 Return-Path: bugs-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id FAA19575 for bugs-outgoing; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 05:24:44 -0700 Received: from dg-rtp.dg.com (dg-rtp.rtp.dg.com [128.222.1.2]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with SMTP id FAA19555 for ; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 05:24:40 -0700 Received: by dg-rtp.dg.com (5.4R2.01/dg-rtp-v02) id AA21087; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 08:24:07 -0400 Received: from lakes (lakes [192.96.3.39]) by ponds.UUCP (8.6.11/8.6.5) with ESMTP id IAA06457; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 08:00:11 -0400 Received: (from rivers@localhost) by lakes (8.6.11/8.6.9) id IAA09296; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 08:05:36 -0400 Date: Mon, 31 Jul 1995 08:05:36 -0400 From: Thomas David Rivers Message-Id: <199507311205.IAA09296@lakes> To: bde@zeta.org.au, zeta.org.au!bde@dg-rtp.dg.com, freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-hackers@FreeBSD.org, ponds!rivers, ponds!rivers@zeta.org.au Subject: Re: Problem with /bin/mv on 2.0.5. Well - working on that theory; and the obviously (now that I think about it) conclusion that the problem must be changing the group (as Bruce had already deduced) - I did the following: $ su # cd /tmp # chgrp general . "general" is the user's group. # exit $ cd /tmp $ touch t $ mv t /usr/user/N and, sure enough - I got no message; and the file /usr/user/N/t was: -rw-r--r-- 1 rivers general 0 Jul 31 07:58 t Now, when I put the group ownership of /tmp back to its proper 'bin' ownership and do the same operation (so that I get group as the owner of 't') as in: Script started on Mon Jul 31 08:00:00 1995 $ cd /tmp $ touch t $ ls -l t -rw-r--r-- 1 user bin 0 Jul 31 08:00 t $ rm $HOME/N/t $ mv t $HOME/N/t mv: /usr/user/N/t: set owner/group: Operation not permitted $ ls -l $HOME/N/t -rw-r--r-- 1 user general 0 Jul 31 08:00 /usr/user/N/t $ ^D Script done on Mon Jul 31 08:00:35 1995 So, we see that the file in /tmp was (after it was created with touch) in the group 'bin'. And, after the move (across file systems) it was in the "correct" group 'general' - the user's group. (Probably because the user "user" had to create and copy the file to move it across file systems. Is it possible that fchown shouldn't complain when the group being set is the one the file actually (probably by happen-stance) has? I dont know if its just that our AMI BIOS was being a sod, but we did undefine "Hard Disk 1". The SCSI said not to define anything for it and so "Hard Disk 2" was not defined either. The SCSI did then show up as "C:" instead of "D:" but the boot prompt did not show and the machine just hung. We scrounged through the Adaptec host config program that one can get before boot and the only likely option was to enable booting under certain circumstances (it was about 2 screens from the initial screen, the context escapes me and I dont feel like rebooting to check it ;) but sadly that didnt help either. Perhaps you could make another boot block that would boot off the scsi while the boot block sits on the IDE should the installer have SCSI and IDE and wish to boot from the SCSI. (If this is > possible with the current boot blocks ignore me. I tend not to fiddle with > boot blocks regularly) I've had a setup work where I had a bootblock on the IDE that booted FreeBSD off the SCSI disk by default and I also had a bootblock on the SCSI disk so that most of the time I could disable the IDE controller and it would boot directly off the SCSI. I only enabled the controller when I needed to access the IDE disks which I generally used for installation testing. It's all possible but maybe not quite plug-n-play. If you have a backup of the scsi a brute force method would be to disable the IDE controller and install from scratch onto the SCSI disk, sysinstall will write a working set of bootblocks onto the SCSI disk then. Make sure you can boot properly off the scsi without the IDE controller enabled. Then enable the IDE controller and put a decent boot manager on it that allows you to select which disk to boot from. If you don't want to re-install from scratch you can try putting new bootblocks onto the SCSI using disklabel. I'm not going to give instructions on how to do that, if you don't understand how to do it you're probably better off not trying since you could trash the disk anyway if you get it wrong. -- Paul Richards, Bluebird Computer Systems. Since I don't have access to anything really : fancy or state of the art (just an old Archive 2150s), I can't verify : if the above fix corrects some of the other "odd" SCSI tape bugs : that have been reported lately. This is somewhat related (no complaints, just observations) I was using a DEC TLZ07 for a while (2.0.5 FreeBSD) The device probe for st0 would fail if a tape was present in the drive at boot time - error "device offline". Due to the POST memory checks and associated BIOS stuff, the tape was always fully ready by the time of the device probe. I also had other problems reading tapes, sometimes it would read 100%, other times (with the same tape) abort with a kernel unknown blocksize message. I also managed (by ejecting tapes at the wrong time, killing tape jobs etc) to get the system into a state where any write I/O (i.e sync) would fail with an 'I/O error'. If I still had the drive, I'd try some debugging, but it had to go back to work :-( Also, I recall there being some inconsistencies in the st(4) man page, such as the minor devno info for the control device. tony From owner-freebsd-bugs Mon Jul 31 11:46:56 1995 Return-Path: bugs-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id LAA18081 for bugs-outgoing; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 11:46:56 -0700 Received: from leibniz.math.psu.edu (leibniz.math.psu.edu [146.186.130.2]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id LAA18073 for ; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 11:46:52 -0700 Received: from napier.math.psu.edu (wilcox@napier.math.psu.edu [146.186.132.4]) by leibniz.math.psu.edu (8.6.12/8.6.9) with ESMTP id OAA22310; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 14:46:50 -0400 Received: from localhost (wilcox@localhost) by napier.math.psu.edu (8.6.12/8.6.9) with ESMTP id OAA15642; Mon, 31 Jul 1995 14:46:46 -0400 Message-Id: <199507311846.OAA15642@napier.math.psu.edu> X-Mailer: exmh version 1.6.2 7/18/95 To: "Bradley L. ("f77" without "-r8" option makes no problem) % f77 -r8 test.f % ./a.out Segmentation fault (core dumped) # "-r8" is meaningful option for "f2c" command. "f77" calls "f2c". In spite of this, "f77 -c -r8" makes no problem. % f77 -c -r8 test.f % f77 test.o % ./a.out (This is OK.) I tested "f77" command with "-v" option. It was found that "f77" command (without "-r8") calls finally "ld" command with "-e start" option. However, "f77 -r8" calls "ld" command without "-e start" option. I think that this feature is meaningful for "f77 -r". However, it's maybe meaningless for "f77 -r8". So, the condition for "-e start" option may change from "!r*" to "!r". >How-To-Repeat: Always on FreeBSD-2.0(.5)-RELEASE. This patch didn't solve problem on FreeBSD, because speed table already propogated up to 115200. The problem is: remote machine can not understand speeds > 38400, but rlogin pass them to remote rlogind f.e: cons25/115200 Other things depends of remote rlogind: if it simple does atoi() set speed ioctl may failed or set unpredictable speed. We need to restrict passed speed to 38400 to satisfy any kind of remote rlogind. I am not shure, but seems this step not cause performance degradation of FBSD->FBSD connection. If no objections comes, I'll commit something aprox. looks like: if (speed > B38400) speed = B38400; -- Andrey A. ServerNumLock is considered a big hack. Turn off your NumLock key, or fix the broken X clients (and file your fixes back to the XConsortium :). This is a well-known X11 bug. Other architectures (e.g. SGI IRIX) do also suffer from it, but it's particularly apparent in FreeBSD since the X server inherits the NumLock setting from the console driver, and the latter defaults to `on' in most cases. XFree 3.1.2 is said to work around this by turning it off initially in the X server. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-bugs Tue Aug 1 10:00:03 1995 Return-Path: bugs-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id KAA00574 for bugs-outgoing; Tue, 1 Aug 1995 10:00:03 -0700 Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id KAA00566 ; Tue, 1 Aug 1995 10:00:02 -0700 Resent-Date: Tue, 1 Aug 1995 10:00:02 -0700 Resent-Message-Id: <199508011700.KAA00566@freefall.cdrom.com> Resent-From: gnats (GNATS Management) Resent-To: freebsd-bugs Resent-Reply-To: FreeBSD-gnats@freefall.cdrom.com, hohmuth@inf.tu-dresden.de Received: from irs201.inf.tu-dresden.de ([141.76.16.201]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id JAA00503 for ; Tue, 1 Aug 1995 09:56:25 -0700 Received: (from hohmuth@localhost) by irs201.inf.tu-dresden.de (8.6.11/8.6.9) id SAA01632; Tue, 1 Aug 1995 18:56:04 +0200 Message-Id: <199508011656.SAA01632@irs201.inf.tu-dresden.de> Date: Tue, 1 Aug 1995 18:56:04 +0200 From: hohmuth@inf.tu-dresden.de Reply-To: hohmuth@inf.tu-dresden.de To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@freebsd.org X-Send-Pr-Version: 3.2 Subject: bin/645: "install -c -s" can't install shell scripts Sender: bugs-owner@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk >Number: 645 >Category: bin >Synopsis: "install -c -s" can't install shell scripts >Confidential: no >Severity: non-critical >Priority: medium >Responsible: freebsd-bugs >State: open >Class: sw-bug >Submitter-Id: current-users >Arrival-Date: Tue Aug 1 10:00:01 PDT 1995 >Last-Modified: >Originator: Michael Hohmuth >Organization: Dept. of Computer Science, TU Dresden, Germany >Release: FreeBSD 2.0.5-RELEASE i386 >Environment: uname -a yields: FreeBSD olymp.inf.tu-dresden.de 2.0.5-RELEASE FreeBSD 2.0.5-RELEASE #0: Wed Jul 5 12:39:10 1995 root@olymp.inf.tu-dresden.de:/usr/src/sys/compile/OLYMP i386 >Description: When invoked with "-s", `install' executes `strip' in order to strip the installed file. When it comes to file systems, I honestly *do* know what the hell I'm doing. Really. The patch fixes two VOP_GETATTR lock instances, though only one or the other can bite you depending on the protocol rev you are using. Yes, the patch looks interesting. I'm uncertain about the VOP_LOCK around the call to VFS_VGET, but I suppose that this might protect the mount point from going away. The connection doesn't work - it prints the error: telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Permission denied >Fix: I don't know. If you just define a small number of aliases by hand after startup, it seems to work ok, but restarting gated causes the problem to resurface (I think). Basically the system locks up with the SCSI drive light on; Alt-Fn does nothing. There are no panic messages. The system: Gateway 2000 4DX2-66P PhoenixBIOS v4.03 GPCI 4.03.09 Motherboard: Anigma (?), Saturn Rev 3 chipset I believe Adaptec AHA-2940 Seagate Barracuda ST31250 Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM PCI DTC PCI IDE Controller WD Caviare 540MB IDE IDE CDROM SMC Elite Ultra SoundBlaster 16 (dmesg output is appended below) I install FreeBSD on the SCSI disk, which has no DOS partition. None of the IDE stuff is used, although the controller and disk are probed. The problem first occurred during installation (via NFS) while bin was being extracted. I turned the external cache off, and was able to install successfully. I built a custom kernel, booted it and tried to break it. It wasn't hard :-( The following: cd / tar -cf - usr | (cd /usr/local; tar -xvf -) caused a lock-up after about 5MB had been copied. /usr and /usr/local are both in their own partitions. I reduced the SCSI transfer rate to 5MHz, still with cache disabled, rebooted and tried again. It got a bit further - about 8MB copied. Again the system locked up, but this time the BIOS was hosed - I got "CMOS checksum bad" when I tried to reboot. Joy! I know that elsewhere the 2940 works well (ftp.cdrom.com). Has anyone any idea why it should bite me? Motherboard? If so, I'll change it. Timing problem due to fast disk? (7200rpm, 8ms - but I can't be the only person using one). BIOS? I'll be happy to try to obtain some diagnostics on this if someone can tell me how to go about it. iain dmesg output: FreeBSD 2.1.0-950726-SNAP #1: Thu Aug 3 21:29:26 BST 1995 root@nomad.nwpeople.demon.co.uk:/usr/src/sys/compile/NOMAD CPU: i486 DX2 (486-class CPU) Origin = "GenuineIntel" Id = 0x435 Stepping=5 Features=0x3 real memory = 16384000 (4000 pages) avail memory = 15069184 (3679 pages) Probing for devices on the ISA bus: sc0 at 0x60-0x6f irq 1 on motherboard sc0: VGA color <16 virtual consoles, flags=0x0> ed0 at 0x280-0x29f irq 10 maddr 0xd8000 msize 8192 on isa ed0: address 00:00:c0:8e:30:a1, type SMC8416C/SMC8416BT (16 bit) psm0 not found at 0x60 sio0 at 0x3f8-0x3ff irq 4 on isa sio0: type 16550A sio1 at 0x2f8-0x2ff irq 3 on isa sio1: type 16550A lpt0 at 0x378-0x37f irq 7 on isa lpt0: Interrupt-driven port lp0: TCP/IP capable interface fdc0 at 0x3f0-0x3f7 irq 6 drq 2 on isa fdc0: NEC 72065B fd0: 1.44MB 3.5in wdc0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7 irq 14 on isa wdc0: unit 0 (wd0): wd0: 515MB (1056384 sectors), 1048 cyls, 16 heads, 63 S/T, 512 B/S bt0 not found at 0x330 npx0 on motherboard npx0: INT 16 interface Probing for devices on the pci0 bus: configuration mode 2 allows 16 devices. chip0 rev 4 on pci0:0 chip1 rev 3 on pci0:2 ahc0 rev 0 int a irq 9 on pci0:3 ahc0: reading board settings ahc0: Reading SEEPROM...done. ahc0: 2940 Single Channel, SCSI Id=7, aic7870, 16 SCBs ahc0: Downloading Sequencer Program...Done ahc0: Probing channel A ahc0 waiting for scsi devices to settle ahc0: target 0 synchronous at 5.0MB/s, offset = 0xf (ahc0:0:0): "SEAGATE ST31250N 0006" type 0 fixed SCSI 2 sd0(ahc0:0:0): Direct-Access 973MB (1994037 512 byte sectors) vga0 rev 0 on pci0:4 pci0:5: vendor=0x1c1c, device=0x1, class=old [no driver assigned] pci0: uses 8392704 bytes of memory from 40000000 upto fffdffff. pci0: uses 256 bytes of I/O space from ff00 upto ffff. -- Iain Baird Network People International Tel: +44 (0)1732 743591 From owner-freebsd-bugs Thu Aug 3 16:41:25 1995 Return-Path: bugs-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id QAA07554 for bugs-outgoing; Thu, 3 Aug 1995 16:41:25 -0700 Received: from localhost.cdrom.com (localhost.cdrom.com [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with SMTP id QAA07544 ; Thu, 3 Aug 1995 16:41:24 -0700 Message-Id: <199508032341.QAA07544@freefall.cdrom.com> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.cdrom.com: Host localhost.cdrom.com didn't use HELO protocol To: iain@nwpeople.demon.co.uk cc: bugs@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 950726-SNAP SCSI/2940 lockup In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 03 Aug 95 22:56:19 GMT." <1403@nwpeople.demon.co.uk> Date: Thu, 03 Aug 1995 16:41:23 -0700 From: "Justin T. The other problem is that mountd is started too early after ypbind, so that ypbind isn't operational yet, thus mountd cant resolve the netgroup. My local fix is to reorder /etc/rc like this: # Start ypbind if we're an NIS client if [ "X${nis_clientflags}" != X"NO" ]; then echo -n ' ypbind'; ypbind ${nis_clientflags} fi # $rwhod is imported from /etc/sysconfig; # if $rwhod is set to YES, rwhod is run. if [ "X${rwhod}" = X"YES" ]; then echo -n ' rwhod'; rwhod fi if [ "X${nfs_client}" = X"YES" ]; then echo -n ' nfsiod'; nfsiod -n 4 fi if [ "X${nfs_server}" = X"YES" -a -r /etc/exports ]; then echo -n ' nfsd'; nfsd -u -t 4 echo -n ' mountd'; mountd fi Of course this no generraly rliable fix, because it depends on the relative speed of starting all those daemons vs. response time of your yp^H^HNIS servers. Uh. I think this needs to be worded a little better than that.. _Where_ in the /etc/netgroup file? :-) Seriously, if we're going to add documentation then we might as well make sure that what we add is very explicit about things.
