I wanted to replace a .so module in libc.so so I did: # cd /usr/lib # mkdir tmp # cd tmp # ar x ../libc_pic.a ar: ../libc_pic.a: Inappropriate file type or format Although there are QUITE A FEW .so objects in /usr/lib/tmp, the RPC objects (specifically, I'm trying to replace the hacked up clnt_udp.so object) which should be in the libc.so appear not to be there! Looks like the extract died before completing. Is this a bug in "ar", or am I doing something wrong? Can anyone shed light on this? I'd be happy to provide list of the files which were successfully extracted, or any other info. The first is to lpr/lpr.c :- In the function test(), which is used to discover if a file can be printed OK. If the -r option (remove files after printing) is used the function will also check that the file can be removed. It uses the variable 'path' which is declared as a char *, but space is never allocated to it. So the program bombs when the strcpy is done. I have changed this to use a strdup() instead, a free() comes later after it has been finished with. Here is the diff:- *** save/lpr.c Tue Sep 19 12:02:03 1995 --- lpr.c Tue Sep 19 12:03:39 1995 *************** *** 600,608 **** if (cp == file) { fd = checkwriteperm(file,"/"); } else { ! strcpy(path, file); *cp = '\0'; fd = checkwriteperm(path, file); *cp = '/'; } if (fd == 0) --- 600,609 ---- if (cp == file) { fd = checkwriteperm(file,"/"); } else { ! path=strdup(file); *cp = '\0'; fd = checkwriteperm(path, file); + free(path); *cp = '/'; } if (fd == 0) The second fix is to lpd/printjob.c:- In the function printjob(), a check is made for whether the lock file exists using stat(). If this fails (i.e. the lock does not exist) then I presume the stat structure contains garbage, or is untouched. Further down the code an fchmod call is done to update the perms on the lock using a modified copy of the stat structure above. This works fine if the lock exists, but if it did not the resulting mode on the lock file is garbage - the mode on the lock file is important since it is how printers are disabled or printing stopped. The fix is just to redo a stat on the lock file before the fchmod(). Here is the diff:- *** save/printjob.c Tue Sep 19 12:02:03 1995 --- printjob.c Tue Sep 19 12:04:17 1995 *************** *** 194,199 **** --- 194,203 ---- } if (nitems == 0) /* no work to do */ exit(0); + if (fstat(lfd, &stb) < 0) { + syslog(LOG_ERR, "Lock has gone!: %s: %s: %m", printer, LO); + exit(1); + } if (stb.st_mode & 01) { /* reset queue flag */ if (fchmod(lfd, stb.st_mode & 0776) < 0) syslog(LOG_ERR, "%s: %s: %m", printer, LO); My thanks to all you guys working on the FreeBSD project. I run FreeBSD at home and often use the source as a reference for my sysadmin work at the office. This is my small contribution. Hope these are of use to you. If some progrma caught signal 11, such program cannot be excuted. So I have to reboot my box. Signal caught by program is usually signal 11, but somtimes it is signal 10 and as a rare case signal 4. In most case, virtual address where signal occured is in shared library (I checked it by running programs on gdb). This phenomenon has appered since September 5. Before then, this problem occurs rarely. (Many vm related code had been changed from Semtember 3 to 5.) >How-To-Repeat: I don't know how to repeat this problem on any machine. On my box, this problem happens every day! >Fix: I think this problem is due to vm bug, but I don't know complete fix. I have found three problem related vm. (1) Function splimp doesn't block disk I/O. Even though 4.4BSD derived code assumes splhigh is higher than or equals to splbio + splnet, net_imask doesn't include bio_imask (cf. isa.c). This may cause access to kmem without lock, if disk I/O intterupton occurs. In most code, splimp call in 4.4BSD has been changed into splhigh (why 'splhigh' which block ALL intterupton?), but some has not been changed yet. The next proble is one of them. My quick hack is that I add following code just above spl0() in isa_conigure: net_imask |= bio_imask; (2) In function mbinit (/sys/kern/uipc_mbuf.c), function m_clalloc is called at splimp. In m_clalloc, kmem_malloc is called. The comment of kmem_malloc in /sys/vm/vm_kern.c says that kmem_malloc should be called at splhigh. So splhigh and splx should be added before and after kmem_malloc call in m_clalloc. (3) splhigh() is misplaced in function vm_map_functon (/sys/vm/vm_map.c). I think this splhigh is added to avoid recursive lock_write call (splhigh doesn't appear in vm_map_function in 4.4BSD). To avoid recursive lock there are two way. One is block interruption as FreeBSD does and another is make submap to avoid competition of map. I think FreeBSD choose former way. In this case, splhigh should be placed BEFORE vm_map_lock, because interruption may occur between vm_map_lock and splhigh, and kmem_map is not locked. (I heard that combination of both two way makes splhigh unneccessary in NetBSD.) Applying above three fixes, the time from reboot to appearing the problem becomes long (but once proble happens, I have to reboot yet.) >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-bugs Wed Sep 20 09:34:48 1995 Return-Path: owner-bugs Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) id JAA19590 for bugs-outgoing; Wed, 20 Sep 1995 09:34:48 -0700 Received: from tellab5.lisle.tellabs.com (tellab5.lisle.tellabs.com [138.111.243.28]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) with SMTP id JAA19585 for ; Wed, 20 Sep 1995 09:34:46 -0700 From: mikebo@tellabs.com Received: from sunc210.tellabs.com by tellab5.lisle.tellabs.com with smtp (Smail3.1.29.1 #4) id m0svS5i-000jBxC; Wed, 20 Sep 95 11:33 CDT Received: by sunc210.tellabs.com (SMI-8.6/1.9) id LAA02014; Wed, 20 Sep 1995 11:33:23 -0500 Message-Id: <199509201633.LAA02014@sunc210.tellabs.com> Subject: 2.0.5R: Is there a BUG in "ar"? -RESENT- To: bugs@freebsd.org Date: Wed, 20 Sep 1995 11:33:22 -0500 (CDT) Cc: mikebo (Mike Borowiec) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-bugs@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk Ummm... excuse me, but is someone responsible for tracking and acknowledging submissions to the "bugs" list, or is this simply a BLACK-HOLE? I wanted to replace an .so module in libc.so so, in order to grab the previously built PIC objects and not have to rebuild them all from scratch (please, don't lecture me on how easy it is... 8v), I did: # cd /usr/lib # mkdir tmp # cd tmp # ar x ../libc_pic.a ar: ../libc_pic.a: Inappropriate file type or format Although there are QUITE A FEW .so objects in /usr/lib/tmp, the RPC objects (specifically, I'm trying to replace the hacked up clnt_udp.so object) which should be in the libc.so appear not to be there! Looks like the extract died before completing. Is this a bug in "ar", or am I doing something wrong? I KNOW how easy it is to "cd /usr/src/lib/libc; make", the problem is that THIS SHOULD WORK. It's been looked at, and Bruce Evans submitted a fix for it and it's in the tree. --------- revision 1.6 date: 1995/09/18 18:37:09; author: bde; state: Exp; lines: +2 -7 Back out the change in rev.1.4 and fix the formatting of the change in rev.1.3. 1.4 just broke 1.3 for the -x case. This fixes PR 721 and merges archive.c with 4.4Lite2. --------- Thanks for keeping us honest, and I'm sorry no one responded to your bug report. In the future, if you could submit them using 'send-pr' it would be easier for us. Also, when someone analyzed/fixed the bug you would be sent a response to show you the status of your bug report. I am accused to have said: > I rebuilt my kernel to pick up PS/2 mouse support, using the psm line out of > LINT. X came up with the mouse working and one of the first things I did in > one of the windows was dump/restore my root fs to my backup root. Perhaps X has > populated some file in my root directory that isn't quite right. Can anyone > suggest what the problem might be, or diagnostic procedures I can use to shake > down the mouse? BTW, if I try cat temporarily unavailable." Some additional information: The port is recognized at boot. The XF86Config shows /dev/psm0 as pointer device and PS/2 as protocol. This driver is S3 and the Mouse is a Logitech product. After first experience the problem I restored root from backup (using dd). Then the mouse worked the first time, but not subsequent times. Till I restored the root again, in which case the mouse worked the first but not subsequent times. The problem occured with both xdm and startx. Logs did not report any mouse errors. I reconfigured startx with warpto specified in a function key. This allowed me to get off the root menu where I had been stuck (especially nasty with xdm) and log out of X cleanly. I started experimenting and found that sometimes when I startx it works and sometimes not- even when I haven't tampered with the config files in between. I think I have a race condition. Once operational the mouse works fine every time throughout the X session. This is circumstantial, but the frequency of the problem seems to vary depending how I have .twmrc configured. Lately its been working right pretty consistently. Anyhow I can circumvent by trying startx again. I'm reporting this to share the circumvention and information that might aid in debugging down the road. Two other users have reported a similar problem with PS/2 mouse (at least one of them with S3) so this may well be related and I've copied them. However, in my case, once dead always dead, at least until the next time I startx... Cheers! My system is a Taiwanese model 419 486DX-33 VLB, with 13 MB RAM, DTC 2278E VLB Enhanced IDE controller with multi I/O, Seagate ST3491A 408 MB IDE hard disk drive (on which FreeBSD is installed), SyQuest 3270A IDE cartridge hard disk drive (the drive FreeBSD is not seeing correctly), Cirrus Logic 5420 SVGA with 1 MB RAM, and Mitsumi FX400 IDE CD-ROM drive. The motherboard uses the Opti 895 chipset and AMI 486 WinBIOS. I find this problem interesting, but I have not yet acquired enough skills to solve it myself. I don't even know where to start looking. I understand that FreeBSD is a complex system and do not wish to seem oblivious of that fact. I have bought the O'Reilly & Associates manual set along with a few books on system administration and UNIX programming, and find your system quite useful. I am intent on becoming a system administrator. Thanks for any help you can give. --Andre Holliday, A (mostly) satisfied customer P.S. The only show stopper I found was ypserv. Its a show stopper again. I asked these questions at that time on the -current list and had no response. Ypserv frees the results of db lookups. I can't find anything that says this is the proper action. Is it? Looking at the code in db, pointers are returned whithin dbm objects and freeing them looks bogus to me. The old malloc silently refused to free the memory due to internal audit checks. Gnumalloc and phkmalloc core. Patches below comment out all of the know bogus and suspect bogus free calls. Somebody that is familiar with the db routines needs to look at this.
