YES! The new handbook section: X. Compatibility with other systems X.1 BSDI (no-brainer, except I gather 2.0 binaries don't work?) X.2 SCO X.3 Linux > Where do we put docs in for review by others? Send stuff in to doc@freebsd.org. In a couple weeks I'll be diving headfirst into a handbook upgrade so if there are some new compat docs in my mailbox, they will find their way in. > PS: Im writing one on PPP Servers, using pppd, as I feel the current docs > in the handbook are inadequate. Super! I think the most common failing found in the handbook (including the ppp docs) are explicit step-by-step instructions *without* sufficient commentary text. Step-by-step procedures are exteremely fragile and fall apart in the face of varaiation among installations. With the rapid development of freebsd, variation is *guaranteed*. The process should be explained by the text, and illustrated by some examples, not the reverse! -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fieber-john.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ============ From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Nov 28 16:06:49 1995 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) id QAA18794 for doc-outgoing; Tue, 28 Nov 1995 16:06:49 -0800 Received: from gswrs6k1.gsw.peachnet.edu (gswrs6k1.GSW.PeachNet.EDU [131.144.28.20]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) with SMTP id QAA18785 for ; Tue, 28 Nov 1995 16:06:38 -0800 Received: from b206_pc24 by gswrs6k1.gsw.peachnet.edu (AIX 3.2/UCB 5.64/4.03 MX) id AA47378; Tue, 28 Nov 1995 19:07:35 -0500 Message-Id: <9511290007.AA47378@gswrs6k1.gsw.peachnet.edu> Date: Tue, 28 Nov 95 19:05:54 -0800 From: Steve Perkins Organization: Georgia Southwestern College X-Mailer: Mozilla 1.2N (Windows; I; 16bit) Mime-Version: 1.0 To: doc@freebsd.org Subject: FreeBSD Documentation Project Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk I was very interested when I saw the request for help with the FreeBSD Handbook on its page at "http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/". I am a third-year college student pursuing a future career in technical writing, and I'd love to be a part of what you're doing. I have been user of Unix for several years, primarily AIX on a mainframe/minicomputer environment and FreeBSD and Linux on my home PC. I contributed a bit to the Linux Documentation Project on options for installing and booting Linux on computers running more than one operating system. Please let me know what sections or topics you are needing help in (...do you simply need plain text content or a "final-version" written in HTML format?), as well as how I can submit things. My "academic" email address, as most likely included above, is steve@gswrs6k1.gsw.peachnet.edu. However, as my account name has had a history of changing from quarter to quarter, you might prefer reaching me through my "professional" (!) address at 103204.1223@compuserve.com. Thanks! Uh oh ... I think two to three TC degree-possessing writers is too many for the doc project! :-) We're using the linuxdoc DTD for the handbook---see /usr/share/sgml/FreeBSD. The DTD is really easy to use. Take a look at any of the existing documents and you'll pick it up. Matt Welsh's original documents on the linuxdoc DTD will help. You probably already know where to get a copy of this. Just ignore the references to his tools and use our tool (/usr/bin/sgmlfmt) instead. Then, just secure an unwritten section by emailing doc@freebsd.org first.
