Hello, don't say I've got you :-) A good idea is to keep config files in /etc, using symlinks to link /usr/local/etc/* with /etc/* Then actual data will reside in /etc, but ports which usually uses $DESTDIR or something like this won't cause a problem. Moreover you can rdist /usr/loca -> ... without thinking about configs. The links will be rdisted but not thee actual data, which depends on an actual host. alexis -- Live fast -- die young From owner-freebsd-ports Sun Aug 6 12:07:44 1995 Return-Path: ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id MAA28659 for ports-outgoing; Sun, 6 Aug 1995 12:07:44 -0700 Received: from ibp.ibp.fr (ibp.ibp.fr [132.227.60.30]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id MAA28653 for ; Sun, 6 Aug 1995 12:07:42 -0700 Received: from blaise.ibp.fr (blaise.ibp.fr [132.227.60.1]) by ibp.ibp.fr (8.6.12/jtpda-5.0) with ESMTP id VAA19222 ; Sun, 6 Aug 1995 21:07:36 +0200 Received: from (roberto@localhost) by blaise.ibp.fr (8.6.12/jtpda-5.0) id VAA02810 ; Sun, 6 Aug 1995 21:07:35 +0200 From: roberto@blaise.ibp.fr (Ollivier Robert) Message-Id: <199508061907.VAA02810@blaise.ibp.fr> Subject: Re: Location of config files... I have them in /usr/local/share. I didn't use our TeX port, though, but compiled Karl Berry's latest distributions (web*, lib.tar.gz and his modified drivers). > -share/texmf/tex/misc/noweb.sty > -share/texmf/tex/misc/nwmac.tex [...] > +lib/texmf/tex/misc/noweb.sty > +lib/texmf/tex/misc/nwmac.tex This requires TEXINPUTS to be set to `/usr/local/lib/texmf/tex//' for the subdir search. This is done in texmf.cnf in Karl Berry's latest version of kpathsea. I don't know if it's true for our TeX port. tg From owner-freebsd-ports Tue Aug 8 04:12:35 1995 Return-Path: ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id EAA20560 for ports-outgoing; Tue, 8 Aug 1995 04:12:35 -0700 Received: from silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU [136.152.64.181]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id EAA20407 for ; Tue, 8 Aug 1995 04:11:11 -0700 Received: (from asami@localhost) by silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (8.6.11/8.6.9) id EAA28985; Tue, 8 Aug 1995 04:09:49 -0700 Date: Tue, 8 Aug 1995 04:09:49 -0700 Message-Id: <199508081109.EAA28985@silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU> To: tom@misery.sdf.com CC: ports@freebsd.org In-reply-to: (message from Tom Samplonius on Sun, 6 Aug 1995 22:18:04 -0700 (PDT)) Subject: Re: wu-ftpd updates From: asami@cs.berkeley.edu (Satoshi Asami) Sender: ports-owner@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk * Enclosed are replacements for wu-ftpd's patch-ab and patch-ab files. * They correct a few pathnames problems in wu-ftpd. * * The binary is now installed in the correct place. Boy, that was quick! :) I'll import it soon, I'll attach the diffs I made to this mail. My comments: Makefile: You need the $Id$ line. If the filename is FOO-x.y.tar.gz and the subdirectory name is FOO-x.y, then just set DISTNAME to FOO-x.y, that will take care of everything. Don't forget the trailing slash in MASTER_SITES. Make sure you set MAINTAINER to yourself so that *I* won't get mails! :) files/md5: Why was this different? ;) pkg/DESCR: This file should be short, three or four paragraphs max. If you want something longer than that from the original source to accompany the package, install it in share or whatever (which is pretty much what you did). We just don't intend to carry them in our repository. pkg/PLIST: Don't worry about @mode and @owner, it should be correct if the installation rule is correct. If it's not, then it's the installation rule that needs to be fixed! :) * There appears to be a problem with RUN "filename". LOAD "filename" : RUN * works just fine, but if anyone wants to complain, I guess I could be * persuaded to investigate. That's fine, when you have time.... :) Thanks! Btw., i've already tried the hell to find out why xperfmon is leaking the memory, while the *very same image* did work well on 1.1.5.1. All i found that it happened inside Xt/Xaw, until i finally gave up. :-( There's no apparent bug or memory leak caused in the non-Xt part of the program. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-ports Thu Aug 10 01:40:56 1995 Return-Path: ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id BAA24958 for ports-outgoing; Thu, 10 Aug 1995 01:40:56 -0700 Received: from eikon.regent.e-technik.tu-muenchen.de (eikon.regent.e-technik.tu-muenchen.de [129.187.42.3]) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) with SMTP id BAA24948 for ; Thu, 10 Aug 1995 01:40:43 -0700 Received: from vector.eikon.e-technik.tu-muenchen.de ([129.187.142.36]) by eikon.regent.e-technik.tu-muenchen.de with SMTP id <55512>; Thu, 10 Aug 1995 10:37:47 +0200 Received: (from jhs@localhost) by vector.eikon.e-technik.tu-muenchen.de (8.6.11/8.6.9) id TAA06524 for ports@freebsd.org; Wed, 9 Aug 1995 19:33:30 +0200 Date: Wed, 9 Aug 1995 19:33:30 +0200 From: Julian Howard Stacey Message-Id: <199508091733.TAA06524@vector.eikon.e-technik.tu-muenchen.de> To: ports@freebsd.org Subject: majordomo absence Sender: ports-owner@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk We have majordomo as a freefall facility, but it's not in ports ? Well, I'd like to use majordomo for some smallish non freebsd lists here, so a copy in ports would be useful, do you have a port that's commit-worthy ? I have majordomo-1.93.tar.gz & associated files from ftp.greatcircle.com/pub/majordomo (not unpacked yet) I know nothing of 1.92 versus 1.93 license terms, should we stick at 1.92 ? if so can I grab a copy from you direct, via freefall incoming, or the net ? I recall (Rod ?) saying long ago we had a customised majordomo on freefall ? I disagree, as I believe we should specify minimal rather than maximal sets of EXEC_DEPENDS. EXEC_DEPENDS forces a pre make before the current port, so we should be conservative in what we force potentially small systems to pre-compile. I have used xfig without ever wanting to print the result. I converted (with xv I think) to gif, & put the result on the web, when later I did want to print, I used chimera to save the page to postscript, then used ghostscript; I never went near transfig (in fact never read the manual till you mentioned it ... thanks :-) A bad example of too liberal use of EXEC_DEPENDS is comms/hylafax/Makefile EXEC_DEPENDS+= ghostview While I personally use ghostview, it is by no means necessary to hylafax, so pre-compilation should not be forced, though it currently is, (I've checked this, am responsible for it, & have plans to correct it). The default setup script used when installing the trn port defaults to 'y' when asked if the local machine keeps an accurate active.times file. It also defaults to 'y' when asking if trn is being installed to read news via NNTP. I was under the impression that an active.times file is only used by software like INN and CNews. I was further under the impression that INN and CNews were only really useful for running local newsfeeds, or being fed by another host. If reading news via NNTP, then, why would one want to run INN or CNews to keep an up-to-date active.times file? The only reason I installed INN was to get a copy of inews. I don't run any other parts of the system because I don't receive a local newsfeed. On a scale of 1 to 10, how confused am I? Sender: ports-owner@FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk In /usr/ports/mail/mh/patches/patch-aa we add a default FreeBSD config file that has POP support turned off by default. This means that a potential pop user has to run the build in two stages, modifying conf/FreeBSD in between. This somewhat dependant on said user knowing quite a bit about the ports collection and isn't exactly what one would call a general mechanism. I see two possibilities: 1. Enable pop by default and assume that the -lcrypt will, at the worst, go to the MD5 encryption (libscrypt) version. 2. Put something into the config section that asks interactively if the user wants POP support and tweaks the file accordingly. Thoughts? It appears that we've never quite built a pop-enabled MH properly! Even with pop, it doesn't look like -rpop works properly; it technically should authenticate via your .rhosts, but does not. I have popper built to allow such authentication, for what it's worth, but without a working apop or rpop it's impossible to have "unattended operation" with inc - something that's necessary if you want to use MH+pop with a front-end like mh-e or xmh (since there's no opportunity to type a password). Ok, then there should be some other place to list "maximal functionality" dependencies. To be honest, when I tried printing and it didn't work, I said to myself "What kind of an idiot made this xfig package and didn't include fig2dev?" It was only after quite a bit of research that I discovered that fig2dev is actually part of transfig and not part of xfig. But from the point of view of a user who just wants stuff to work, there should at least have been some warning when I pkg_install'd xfig that I needed transfig as well to get the full functionality. Not necessarily a forced dependency, but a suggested one. The hylafax->ghostscript dependency could be the same way -- "if you want to FAX postscript files, you need ghostscript." "If you want to print from xfig, you need transfig." Right now, the programs are configured to think that they have these things available to them, and fail in obscure ways when they don't have them. That, frankly, sucks from joe random user's standpoint. I was thinking about that yesterday. I wanted to build a super-wish, because that's what my favorite debugger (tgdb) wants. Problem is, all of the tcl extensions all seem to want the same thing: to be sited in such a way that ALL of the tcl tool build directories are subdirs of the same directory. Our ports setup doesn't allow for this. I have (on my machine) gotten around this by creating links that cheat to get this kind of organization. I do kinda wish that tcl could be handled as some kind of special case for ports, tho. I haveta build TkSteal, which isn't a port, but needs that organization. I bet that's why tclDP doesn't find tcl. ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- Chuck Robey | Interests include any kind of voice or data chuckr@eng.umd.edu | communications topic, C programming, and Unix. 9120 Edmonston Ct #302 | Greenbelt, MD 20770 | I run Journey2 (Freebsd 2.0.5-snap-0726) and (301) 220-2114 | n3lxx (FreeBSD 2.0.5-snap-0622) -- Great! ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- From owner-freebsd-ports Sat Aug 12 20:44:05 1995 Return-Path: ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id UAA04621 for ports-outgoing; Sat, 12 Aug 1995 20:44:05 -0700 Received: from ref.tfs.com (ref.tfs.com [140.145.254.251]) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id UAA04615 for ; Sat, 12 Aug 1995 20:44:04 -0700 Received: (from root@localhost) by ref.tfs.com (8.6.11/8.6.9) id UAA01682 for ports@FreeBSD.org; Sat, 12 Aug 1995 20:43:40 -0700 Date: Sat, 12 Aug 1995 20:43:40 -0700 From: Julian Elischer Message-Id: <199508130343.UAA01682@ref.tfs.com> To: ports@FreeBSD.org Subject: more on broken ports Sender: ports-owner@FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk ports loaded from Ftp.freebsd.org /pub/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/ports jules# uname -a FreeBSD jules 2.1.0-950726-SNAP FreeBSD 2.1.0-950726-SNAP #0: Thu Jul 27 10:31:33 1995 jkh@westhill.cdrom.com:/usr/src/sys/compile/GENERIC i386 jules# grep ldconfig */*/Makefile devel/libdlmalloc/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib devel/libmalloc/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib graphics/ImageMagick/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib graphics/jpeg/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib graphics/mpeg-lib/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib graphics/tiff/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib graphics/xpm/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib japanese/Canna/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib japanese/mh/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib japanese/tcl/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib japanese/tk/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib lang/itcl/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib lang/schemetoc/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib lang/tcl/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib mail/mh/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib math/blas/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib math/eispack/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib math/gmp/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib math/linpack/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib net/tclDP/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib x11/XFree86/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib x11/Xaw3d/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib x11/blt/Makefile: ldconfig -m ${PREFIX}/lib (plus more..) jules# ldconfig -m ldconfig: illegal option -- m Usage: ldconfig [-r][-s][-v][dir ...] julian From owner-freebsd-ports Sat Aug 12 20:51:40 1995 Return-Path: ports-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id UAA05302 for ports-outgoing; Sat, 12 Aug 1995 20:51:40 -0700 Received: from tfs.com (tfs.com [140.145.250.1]) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) with SMTP id UAA05296 for ; Sat, 12 Aug 1995 20:51:37 -0700 Received: by tfs.com (smail3.1.28.1) Message-Id: Date: Sat, 12 Aug 95 20:51 PDT From: julian@TFS.COM (Julian Elischer) To: ports@freebsd.org Subject: ok I found the answer.. As it stands now, 2.0.5R, July snap, or -stable users will need to run ldconfig with appropriate arguments (probably "/usr/lib /usr/local/lib /usr/X11R6/lib") or reboot before it gets registered in the shlib cache. The new "-m" flag was added exactly for this reason. * I don't pretend to understand the ports stuff.. Me neither.... I wanted to build a super-wish, * because that's what my favorite debugger (tgdb) wants. Problem is, all * of the tcl extensions all seem to want the same thing: to be sited in * such a way that ALL of the tcl tool build directories are subdirs of the * same directory. Our ports setup doesn't allow for this. I have (on my * machine) gotten around this by creating links that cheat to get this kind * of organization. I do kinda wish that tcl could be handled as some kind * of special case for ports, tho. I haveta build TkSteal, which isn't a * port, but needs that organization. If all you need is a symlink, you can add something like post-extract: ln -s ${PORTSDIR}/lang/tcl/work/tcl-7.3 ${WRKSRC} to the Makefile of the port that needs it.... * I bet that's why tclDP doesn't find tcl. Well, this wasn't the case, but it's a good suggestion nonetheless.
