This problem is on our file as ports/467 ("utils/kp wrong distfile place after make fetch"), reported by paepcke@arcway.snafu.de (Michael Paepcke). I told Julian to talk to Michael, did you guys find anything in common? The problem is, I can't reproduce it anywhere. And apparently nobody else can (or we'll be flooded by complaints). It could be an interaction of a particular version of ncftp and a ftpd (just a guess). Don't know what prep's running, the kp master site is my machine at school, running stock HP-UX 9.05. If someone else sees something like this, please get back to us. Julian, do you have a problem with misc/kp? Jordan has been drilling me about this for months. ;) Here's a re-bake of what I sent to this list a while ago.... I would like to put auto-generated README files in each port's directory as well as the categories. To auto-generate this README, we can create a subdirectory "pkg" that has COMMENT and DESCR (I have no idea what PLIST here can do ;) in each category. For instance, the emulators/README will look like this. Most of it will be taken from a template, residing in /usr/ports/templates or something. === This is the README file of ports/emulators. This category contains software that you can use to run programs for different operating systems and those you can use to read/write data written in their format. (taken from pkg/DESCR) These are the one-line descriptions of each port: cpmemu: Cpm emulator version 0.2 cpmtools: Utility to transfer files from/to CP/M (R) diskettes. hfs: hfs - program for reading Macintosh HFS floppy disks, hard drives a. mtools: Mtools - a collection of tools for manipulating MSDOS files. Vers. pcemu: pcemu - An 8086 PC emulator, written by By David Hedley (hedley@cs.. tkfhs: tkhfs - a Tcl/Tk front end to the hfs program. vmsbackup: VMSBACKUP reads VMS BACKUP tapes. (obviously taken from */pkg/COMMENT -- I truncated long lines) If you want to see a more detailed description of each port, please cd into that directory and type "make info". === And ports/README will have a little more "meta" version of this, taking emulators/pkg/COMMENT and such. Obviously, it needs a separate template too. Same goes to individual ports' directories, although that would be much simpler no children (PKGNAME, pkg/COMMENT, pkg/DESCR, plus some dependencies?). Jordan suggested we make make this do html, so some tips on how to do that would be appreciated too. I guess we just add some ; Sun, 3 Dec 1995 05:21:46 -0800 Received: (from asami@localhost) by silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (8.6.12/8.6.9) id FAA01051; Sun, 3 Dec 1995 05:21:43 -0800 Date: Sun, 3 Dec 1995 05:21:43 -0800 Message-Id: <199512031321.FAA01051@silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU> To: ports@freebsd.org Subject: Proposal 7: Remove recursion from PLIST processing From: asami@cs.berkeley.edu (Satoshi Asami) Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk People who have made their own port knows that pkg/PLIST can be a real pain to maintain for large packages, especially with all those directories and stuff. Now, here's an easy way to fix that -- use the --norecurse option to tar when we call it from pkg_create. That way, we can just do a "cd /usr/local; find share/emacs" kind of thing ("kind of" because it can still be in multiple directories, like "share/emacs" and "libexec/emacs", which will require multiple passes) to generate most of the list. The way it stands now, we either list the directory name, or all the filenames. The former is not recommended, as some files might get added later, and the latter is pretty inconvenient, as (1) The "find" output includes directory names as well, which will result in that subtree being included twice if you leave them in. Yes you can hand-delete them, but when there are hundreds of files, you can easily miss something. (2) There can be an empty directory, or a directory which may or may not be empty (think of site-lisp in emacs -- if you install ispell first, that won't be empty when emacs comes in), and you will need to play some tricks with @exec mkdir and such. (3) You can't set the modes/ownerships of directories correctly, unless you specify them with @mode etc. The extracting tar will create them automatically, with whatever ownership/modes that it chooses to, if we don't have the directories in the tarfile. The downside of this is that we can no longer be "lazy" and just specify the directory name in the PLIST, I'm not sure how many of them are like this but if this is approved, I'll go over all of them for once, and it will be easier from there on. This will also (more or less) solve the problem of deleting only what we are supposed to from pkg_delete, as we can just do unlink()/rmdir() of everything in PLIST in reverse order. This should DTRT most of the time. Yes, I can see some extra directories deleted now and then, but that's not too serious -- as long as we be careful to only put things that pretty much belong to that port, there won't be much danger. What do you think? (Yes, I know about the PLIST discussion between Jordan and Michael, but that went too far. :) Satoshi From owner-freebsd-ports Sun Dec 3 08:52:27 1995 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) id IAA06465 for ports-outgoing; Sun, 3 Dec 1995 08:52:27 -0800 Received: from wiley.muc.ditec.de (wiley.muc.ditec.de [194.120.126.9]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) with ESMTP id IAA06449 for ; Sun, 3 Dec 1995 08:52:21 -0800 Received: from vector.enet (slip139-92-18-132.emea.ibm.net [139.92.18.132]) by wiley.muc.ditec.de (8.6.12/8.6.9) with ESMTP id RAA01914; Sun, 3 Dec 1995 17:50:29 +0100 Received: (from jhs@localhost) by vector.enet (8.6.12/8.6.9) id MAA11581; Sun, 3 Dec 1995 12:15:16 +0100 Date: Sun, 3 Dec 1995 12:15:16 +0100 From: "Julian Stacey jhs@freebsd.org" Message-Id: <199512031115.MAA11581@vector.enet> To: Chuck Robey cc: Sergio Lenzi , ports@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: INGRES 8.9 Reply-To: "Julian H. On the other * hand, it probably need to be improved here and there. Ok, some suggestions: (1) Print out messages received from the other end. In particular, the ones that tell us why we can't connect (usually "There are already 300 ftp users" or some such), is one thing we definitely need to show our users. Since there is no easy way for the program to distinguish between useful information like that and other garbage ("This ftp site is sponsored by the generous donation of Moon Mycrosystems"), I suggest we print everything out. :) (2) Can you make it print out the size of the file right after the "file: foobar.tar.gz"? I don't think a full percentage ruler like ncftp is necessary, but it will be nice to see how much more we need to get. (3) Also, printing out the transfer rate when we are done is one cool thing I miss. That gives you some idea who's close and who's not. It seems to be working very well so far. At least it is able to handle sites behind firewalls, with wu-ftpd and on-the-fly packaging, without any special tricks. If you don't mind, I'll put together a small "package" (this is the "ports" list after all!) and put it up for ftp for people to try it. Speaking of trying, what I did was to add the lines NCFTP=/usr/local/bin/ftpget NCFTPFLAGS= to my /etc/make.conf. This bombs when the port's Makefile explicitly sets NCFTPFLAGS, but otherwise it allows one to test it without compromising "make world"-ability (i.e., no modification to bsd.port.mk, which will be clobbered by "make world"). Now, Thomas and I wonder whether you, the FreeBSD people, are interested in including this port (or one for your 2.1.0 release) into your ported software collection. If so, could you please tell us how we should proceed in this matter? The teTeX distribution is based on Karl Berry's web2c, kpathsea, dvipsk, xdvik etc. (Since release 0.3.3 teTeX is no longer Linux-only.) It comes with 68 precompiled binaries for each platform (e.g., Sparc/Solaris, DEC Alpha/OSF, etc.) and a rich texmf tree of macros and fonts and lots of manuals. For more information on the teTeX distribution consult the attached README file. In addition, you can find the whole distribution at your favorite CTAN site under "/tex-archive/systems/unix/teTeX/distrib/". Greetings, Bernd. --- This is version 0.3.3 of teTeX, a TeX distribution for UNIX. =========================================================================== Here - in short - the main features of teTeX, as listed in the file FEATURES: =========================================================================== Main features of the teTeX distribution: - file organisation orientated at the upcoming TDS (TeX Directory Standard) - very easy to install and customize (install.sh and texconfig utility) - LaTeX2e (June 1995) patch level 3 together with lots of extra LaTeX packages (most packages mentioned in the LaTeX Companion) - much documentation: more than 100 dvi-files, teTeX manual, teTeX FAQ and TeX FAQ - support for read-only inputs tree (i.e. possible to use alternate destination for newly created fonts) - ready for a multi platform setup - fast file searching. web2c was patched to work with kpathsea-2.6. The search paths are chosen to give high performance. - run-time configuration files for dvi-drivers and tex+friends. - a nice set of fonts to play with: PostScript fonts, ams, pandora, cm, dc, oldgerman. All easily accessable by LaTeX. - the whole distribution can be installed anywhere in the filesystem (e.g. /usr/TeX or /usr/local/tex). I have compiled a new version of popclient and there is a bug in the config.h that deals with the mail command It happens that the mail command in the pop client is with an option -d. At the time the popclient executes mail to save your data, it executes mail -d [user] and the mail program vanishes with your mail. I react when I see someone offering something of use to FreeBSD, and (seemingly) being offered nothing but complaints. I couldn't see anything else from what I read. I don't think I said anything I couldn't stand by, but perhaps if I'd seen the whole picture (and that you'd offered him help, which appeared nowhere I could see) then I wouldn't have commented. I didn't want to see someone contribute, then get upbraided for it. I think that's fair still. If I put my foot into it from part of a conversation I didn't see, well, for that I could be wrong. > > Frankly Chuck, Sergio & I had sorted this out without you, however > as you have injected yourself into the proceedings, > I now cede to you the honour of testing Sergio's forthcoming port; > let me know when you've finished & it's ready to commit please. Is it just that our ports and packages collection is so good that nobody bothers making stuff compile out of box anymore? :-) The problem is that FreeBSD people are not sending patches back to authors. This has been the case at least with ssh, pppd and djpeg. As this is only with the authors I happened to discuss with for some other reason, I think the problem is worse than just a couple of programs. I would propose that ports would not be committed at all before the patches have been sent to authors. If it is optional, people are too lazy to do the sub-5-minute job to check out the authors address from docs and mail the patch file. If the author decides not to accept the patches, it is authors problem, then, but at least you tried. With ssh some of the patches in ports also were wrong according to what I heard from the author. So, it is not just trying to make things compile, but make sure that author can also verify that the patches do the intended thing and do not break anything else. I cannot imagine anything better for quality assurance than checking it with the original author. -- Heikki Suonsivu, T{ysikuu 10 C 83/02210 Espoo/FINLAND, hsu@clinet.fi work +358-0-4375209 fax -4555276 home -8031121 From owner-freebsd-ports Mon Dec 4 23:44:47 1995 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) id XAA16268 for ports-outgoing; Mon, 4 Dec 1995 23:44:47 -0800 Received: from ibp.ibp.fr (ibp.ibp.fr [132.227.60.30]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.6.12/8.6.6) with ESMTP id XAA16261 for ; Mon, 4 Dec 1995 23:44:41 -0800 Received: from blaise.ibp.fr (blaise.ibp.fr [132.227.60.1]) by ibp.ibp.fr (8.6.12/jtpda-5.0) with ESMTP id IAA02666 ; Tue, 5 Dec 1995 08:43:55 +0100 Received: from (uucp@localhost) by blaise.ibp.fr (8.6.12/jtpda-5.0) with UUCP id IAA03324 ; Tue, 5 Dec 1995 08:43:54 +0100 Received: (from roberto@localhost) by keltia.freenix.fr (8.7.2/keltia-uucp-2.7) id IAA01226; Tue, 5 Dec 1995 08:33:06 +0100 (MET) From: Ollivier Robert Message-Id: <199512050733.IAA01226@keltia.freenix.fr> Subject: Re: teTeX distribution To: br@netland.sub.de Date: Tue, 5 Dec 1995 08:33:06 +0100 (MET) Cc: ports@FreeBSD.ORG, te@informatik.uni-hannover.de In-Reply-To: <199512041246.MAA00373@stiller.netland.sub.de> from "Bernd Rosauer" at Dec 4, 95 12:46:03 pm X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 2.2-CURRENT ctm#1404 X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24 ME8b] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-ports@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk It seems that Bernd Rosauer said: > I ported Thomas Esser's teTeX 0.3.3 distribution (read: TeX and friends for > UNIX-like platforms) to FreeBSD 2.0.5 (as well as to NetBSD 1.0 and BSD/OS > 2.0). If it is optional, people are too lazy to do Argh. No! We don't need big brother - big brother is frequently asleep or buried in exams anyway. We need better brother. We need to extend the ports mechanism so that *more state* is kept with each port. We have a MAINTAINER field, for example, but it only tracks *our* maintainer! What if you want to get in touch with the original source? The computer is supposed to be our helper here, so make IT deal with figuring out how to send patches back to maintainers! I'm perfectly serious. I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to run a script over the ports collection to bundle up mail messages (which I would of course review before sending) to each of the *original* maintainers consisting of a short explanatory message and a shar file of the patches still required by FreeBSD. Run the script every couple of months and keep stats on whether or not the number of patch files in the tree grows or shrinks so you'll know whether or not it's working. The answer is not in more draconian policies, it's in working *smarter*. By the way, two small questions about technical details: (1) Why don't you just define the new target as "all" and get rid of the extra "all: all_hook" line? (2) The new target should be either moved completely inside the test for "!target(all)" or outside (i.e., the added ".endif" should go in place of the added ".else"). The way it is now, it's sort of confusing as it mixes two tests. From: asami@cs.berkeley.edu (Satoshi Asami) Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk * We don't need big brother - big brother is frequently asleep or buried * in exams anyway. Gee thanks. ;) * We need better brother. We need to extend the ports * mechanism so that *more state* is kept with each port. We have a * MAINTAINER field, for example, but it only tracks *our* maintainer! * What if you want to get in touch with the original source? The * computer is supposed to be our helper here, so make IT deal with * figuring out how to send patches back to maintainers! I'm perfectly * serious. I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to run a script over * the ports collection to bundle up mail messages (which I would of * course review before sending) to each of the *original* maintainers * consisting of a short explanatory message and a shar file of the * patches still required by FreeBSD. Run the script every couple of * months and keep stats on whether or not the number of patch files in * the tree grows or shrinks so you'll know whether or not it's working. I'm not sure if this (someone other than porter sending diffs to original author) is a good idea. (Adding an OWNER or whatever for original author is fine.) (1) Not all the patches are appropriate to be sent to authors. For instance, there are many ports that have gone through a massize re-orginization (libexec, etc.) to convert to the FreeBSD paradigm, and those changes will just be met with a "huh?" response. (2) Some patches are done with coexistence with other platforms in mind. For instance, there are a lot of ports that just comment out something without adding "ifndef __FreeBSD__" or whatever. Although that we can argue that it is a lousy porting job, I really don't think we should blame the porters who've been putting their work into this, and it works for us, which is probably good enough for most of the people. In short, only the porter, or a very careful observer of the port, knows if the patch is appropriate to be sent to the author. I sure don't have time to look at everything this automatic mail-writing daemon is going to generate, so if someone else doesn't volunteer to look at them, I don't think it's going to work. In the worst case, we'll just annoy the authors (I mean if we send out mails without checking them carefully). * The answer is not in more draconian policies, it's in working * *smarter*. Indeed. But I really don't think it's THAT bad that people don't send back patches to authors, the beauty of the current ports collection is that usually, upgrading will just work with the old set of patches. And many of the times it fails, it is becuase they have added FreeBSD support with a different patch. :) I would like to reiterate that it will indeed be nice if all the patches in the ports collection disappear and everything in the world compiles for FreeBSD out-of-the box, and encourage everyone (either the original porter, or some careful observer, like Ollivier is doing for ssh) to send mail to the original author of the changes we made. But I don't think we should tighten our ropes for making a new port. I've been trying to make it easier for a new porter to join our club (that's why I go in and change every one of ache's Makefiles -- so that all the Makefiles look the same :), and am against any attempt to do otherwise. The Mail Users SHell is code that has been posted to USENET many moons ago as a replacement for standard UNIX mail. There is a command line mode, a fullscreen mode, and a Sun-Windows mode. I run it on a variety of UNIX platforms because it is full-featured, yet obscure. I've built it under FreeBSD 2.0.5, the only problem being that mail flagged for deletion doesn't go away. If anyone can help on this, let me know. There is also a USENET group called comp.mail.mush, but the traffic level is nil. Over the last few months, some patches were posted there to the last official version. I'm running the 2nd latest on this Sun box. -- I don't speak (or work) for the Baltimore County Public Library. There's are official alpha 7.2.6 patch (third revision) on ftp.ncd.com. Stefan Esser has been feeding FreeBSD fixes back to the author, but there still appear to be bugs in the screen display code. I've been running a slightly hacked version for about a week (replaces my old 1.1.5.1 binary!), and I hope to get around to cleaning up my changes some time soon (I think there are a few more places the update code has an off-by-one error, resulting in junk in column 80 or a core, and I need to conditionalise a non-essential patch to the reverse video code). For instance xpermon-1.1 was * recently changed to work with FreeBSD 2.1. However, the package name * was left the same, it would be better to add another level of * indexation such as xpermon-1.1a to indicate to users that changes have * been made. This is a very good point, it has been pointed out in the past that it's not clear when ports are updated. In fact, if I weren't reading the commit mails or looking at a cvs update, I wouldn't know at all! However, I'm not sure how we can add this without potential clashes with the original versions. For instance, there ARE xv-3.10a, Xaw3d-1.2a, etc., on the original master sites...also, letters as `a' or `b' are often used to mean "alpha" "beta" and such, or small changes (like in the case of xv and Xaw3d examples). Another thing is that, it might give the user the false impression that there exists a new version of the original software, when it was only a bugfix on the FreeBSD port. This is not very clear if the user is looking at a package (or doesn't know how to read the port Makefile). Hmm. Does anyone have an idea on how to include this information without the above problems? The package compiles cleanly - with adjustment to 'sys_errlist' references, that is - but ld complains with an error message that '__DYNAMIC' can't be referenced. If I feed ld the -Bstatic option , I then get an error message that '___progname' can't be referenced. I'm using the s-386bsd.h config file. I'm sure things would go much better if I'd just use current Emacs-19.30, but it's gotten so large and my disk space is limited. I'd sure appreciate any help. Thanks. Jim RA: e3387471@adsnet.net
