Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-questions@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk I just picked up the latest edition of "UNIX System Administration Handbook" (an EXCELLENT reference text, btw; I'll be sending highest kudos to the authors). While it doesn't go into details about any of the Free*BSD's nor Linux, it DOES go into details of a lot of the workstation OS's, including HPUX, Solaris, ... as well as BSDi on 80x86's. So, my question is: how "similar" or "dissimilar" is BSDi from FreeBSD? in terms of the user interface, system admin tools, programming environment, etc.? (i.e. are most of the user-land commands available in FreeBSD, available on BSDi and do they work similarly? And vice-versa)... well, you get the idea. I know there'll be differences, and I'm expecting that: f.e. I know that BSDi uses its own UUCP derived from the original BSD UUCP, with its own enhancements, while FreeBSD uses Taylor UUCP with the weird Taylor-style config files (I much prefer standard HDB configs, but that's another story). So I'm not expecting them to be THE SAME. I just figured that BSDi, since both it and FreeBSD were based on the 4.4-lite (please correct me if I'm wrong on this), that they should be, in large part, fairly similar. Of course, I've never used BSDi, so I can't say this with conviction. That's why I'm asking you folks :) Please let me know. Thanks! The details that you ask for are below: > >What the hell. I've got some time to kill, and I have played around with >iij-ppp enough so that I am willing to give yorur problem a shot. >Unfortunately, I got in a little late on the thread, and so don't know: > >a) what exactly is the problem; When I run iij-ppp, and use the 'term' or 'dial' commands, no characters are sent to the modem (RD/SD lights do not flash). I can use 'tip' and 'cu' on the same device (/dev/cuaa1) without any problems. One scenario: I used "cu -p port4" where port4 is setup as a direct connect to the modem. I typed 'AT' and 'ATZ' and got back 'OK' in both cases. I then exitted cu, and confirmed that the lock file had been removed. I then tried 'ppp myisp' and 'show modem' to confirm that everything was setup to talk to the correct device (/dev/cuaa1) and the modem. (BTW, outq showed 0 at this point). I then typed 'term' and typed 'AT' and ATZ' with no response. After typing '~.' to return to the ppp prompt, I typed 'show modem' again. Outq showed '7' now, which implies (to me) that no characters were sent out the device port. It seems that nothing is getting to the modem... Another scenario: If I try to use iijppp and the 'term' command, iijppp does not communicate with the modem (no lights flash on the modem, and no characters are echoed). Quite often, but not always, the characters that I type after the term command, e.g. 'at', are buffered and are read by the shell once kill the ppp process. If I try to use iijppp and the 'dial myisp' command, iijppp responds with 'dial failed.', presumably because the modem is not responding. Of course, the modem is not responding because it never receives any characters... >b) I don't have copiesof your configuration files (which would help...) Here is my /etc/ppp/conf file. I have done this and the system comes up and is happy with the 4gb drive. I am using 4095/64/32 for the disk geometry on the micropolis, as suggested by the installation program. However, when I use the installation procedure to partition and label the 4gb disk into multiple slices, I run into trouble as soon as I continue with the part of the installation which actually writes the labels to the disks (I am NOT using 'w' from within FDISK!): 1) The installation panics and complains that the init process has died. On the debugging screen I get a message similar this: (I couldn't find a way to stop the auto-reboot and preserve the screen for very long so the numbers might be a bit off.) ncr?: scatter/gather failed (residue=209687000) sd1: oops not queued init died 2) On the next invocation of the install utility, booted from floppy, I see the following in the debug screen before I actively do anything: sds1: raw partition size != slice size sds1: start 32, end 8386559, size 8386528 sdsi1c: start 32, end 65535, size 65504 I haven't tried to fdisk/label the big disk outside of the installation program, is there a chance that might work better? So did I and the new kernel sources were extracted into /sys without cleaning it, it seems that with the reorganisation of the matcd driver this means that you have an old (and obsolete) file around which is stuffing things up. Clean /sys with a rm -rf and then re-extract the kernel sources. Worked like a charm for me. /mark -- +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ | Mark Hannon,| FreeBSD - Free Unix for your PC| mark@seeware.DIALix.oz.au| | Melbourne, | PGP key available by fingering | epamha@epa.ericsson.se | | Australia | seeware@melbourne.DIALix.oz.au | | +-=-=-=-=-=-=-+-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ From owner-freebsd-questions Sun Dec 31 15:14:48 1995 Return-Path: owner-questions Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id PAA23794 for questions-outgoing; Sun, 31 Dec 1995 15:14:48 -0800 (PST) Received: from Aspen.Woc.Atinc.COM ([198.138.38.205]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id PAA23787 for ; Sun, 31 Dec 1995 15:14:43 -0800 (PST) Received: (from jmb@localhost) by Aspen.Woc.Atinc.COM (8.6.12/8.6.9) id SAA21985; Sun, 31 Dec 1995 18:13:49 -0500 Date: Sun, 31 Dec 1995 18:13:47 -0500 (EST) From: "Jonathan M. I don't know what changed from 2.1r that would cause it to bomb. But it does. I've followed this thread which has provided me no information that I didn't already know or do. I get the following error right after the deletion of the old compiled directory. I don't know why it's unknown, especially when it's like the third one down in a list of 5. No modifications of the makefile has been done, option options selected, and later commected out in hopes of getting it to compile, which hasn't helped. I'm not a Unix programmer, but under- stand most of what's going on without needing to know the mechanics. Unknown % construct in generic makefile: %SFILES Why does this show up and how can I eliminate it. What files does -current need to have in order to compile correctly? If I had sup setup, would I be experiencing this problem? If sup IS setup, will I be downloading code that could break my system, which is a production box? I don't want to beta new code. I need help. I *need* BSDI 2.0 binary compatibility and it's been like pulling teeth with tweezers to get a working compilable kernel. I'm just a tad bit frustrated at this whole process because I"ve wasted alot of time dinking around trying to figure out why the damn won't compile. All the great advice so far hasn't helped. I've downloaded the entire directory structure of /.3/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-current/src/ from ftp.cdrom.com so unless there's more I should have all the code. What else do I need to do? I'm running 2.1R now without problems and the compilation went very smooth. iocomf.h must have been created when I compiled that version. I have removed any additions to the new kernel and basically have the same kerenl config as that of 2.1R. I have to be missing something other that just rerunning config . I can't believe that this is that hard to get straight. Besides compiling the new kernel, what else will I need to compile in order to get -current to work. I don't have a second machine to work with so what ever I do has to be done on a production box and then rebooted. I'd like a second box, but I have to wait on that. Thanks for letting me get my frustrations out. 5 days is too long to be dinking with this thing. It can serve as a http, ftp, gopher proxy server. Also, there is a TIS Firewall Toolkit freely available, but I have problem using it on FreeBSD 2.05R. I cannot make its generic proxy server work. It seems to have problems compiling under FreeBSD 2.05R. Yen-Wei Liu
