I'll go look at Doug's code...(time passes) I just looked things over, and there's no difference between Doug's port and mine, other than the default for my port has all files installed in the ${PREFIX} tree and his follows the NEC default of stuffing stuff in /etc. Given that it's trivial to change this, and Doug is now listed as the official maintainer of the port, I'll let him decide which is proper behavior (but I think proper behavior is to store configs in /usr/local/etc, not /etc, as that's where port config files are supposed to go.) I think you'll agree that mine's a simple superset of yours at | this point, so there's no additional work you need to do other than the | libcompat thing. When I get home tonight I'll take a look at what you did (this was my first FreeBSD port attempt). | What's up with libcompat? The issue is that currently libcompat gets linked in with libsocks5_sh.so. This means that libcompat gets pulled in whenever LD_PRELOAD is used with libsocks5_sh.so. This causes sed to goes bonkers when you do a "runsocks make" in a port. The reason for doing the "runsocks make", is that when ncftp gets called it will now be socks'ified. I've been working with Dave Blob (the author), and we are looking at eliminating libcompat totally from Socks5. It looks like we can, as the archie client was the only thing using the old re_comp stuff and it has it's own version of it. We talked about a Makefile solutions as well. Also I haven't been rushing on this problem since most of the details I've been working out has just been made possible with the addition of LD_PRELOAD support in -current. So until now nobody would run into these problems and I wanted a solution that would get rolled back into the Socks5 release. So far Dave has been extremely willing to roll my changes to support FreeBSD "out-of-the-box" into his release. | p.s. This must be a very | obsolete version, libcompat is supposed to only exist as libcompat.a | now. Sorry I wasn't quiet specific enough in my extensions. libsocks5_sh.so was built with libcompat.a (via ld) so now libsocks5_sh.so contains libcompat.a as part of libsocks5_sh.so. So now when libsocks5_sh.so is pre-loaded via LD_PRELOAD via ld.so (what is does is first load and resolve symbols in all LD_PRELOAD libs and then the builtin libs specificied in the binarary at build time. This is so socks can intercept libc's network calls). Clearly libcompat.a should not be linked with libsocks5_sh.so for FreeBSD because this forces every application to use the libcompat version of calls if LD_PRELOAD is set to libsocks5_sh.so, which is wrong. Now you ask why would Dave ever thing of linking a library with libsocks5_sh.so? The reason would be for Kerberos support in libsocks5_sh.so. Socks5 supports Kerberos 5 to encrypt all data communication that libsocks5_sh.so makes. Since an application may not have been linked with Kerberos, then libsocks5_sh.so could fail when making a Kerberos call. So we need to link Kerberos into libsocks5_sh.so, to make sure Kerberos symbols are resolved. Now it may have been better if Dave did a dlopen of the Kerberos lib, but he doesn't and I'm not sure why maybe he doesn't want to depend on a shared lib version of it and would like it "statically" linked to libsocks5_sh.so. He would also have to add code to figure out when to dlopen it etc. | Despite of this, it should always be possible to avoid libcompat with | only minimal effort. All of the functions in libcompat are supposed | to be obsolete -- that's why they are there (and do no longer bloat | libc as you will find in many commercial systems). Yep that's why we want to get rid of libcompat. Strictly speaking Socks5 doesn't need but one of the clients "archie" that he includes in the distribution does and I don't know how much hacking he wants to do to that and I'm waiting for his reply. I think this is all pretty neat stuff and was fun to get going. Doug A. Everything under /usr is supposed to be able to be network shared, and some ports put stuff in /usr/local/etc which cannot be shared under any circumstances (eg: ssh). I think it would be better to have a twiddle-able knob somewhere that makes security sensative and/or implicitly "per-host" stuff go to /etc somewhere rather than /usr/local/etc. Note that I'm not asking for this to be the default (like NOMANCOMPRESS, this would make packaging a nightmare), what I'm suggesting is something like a /etc/make.conf variable which defaults something like: PORTS_LOCALETCDIR=$(PREFIX)/etc .. and have things like ssh, socks5, tcp_wrappers, etc use that. Then people like me who want to be able to share /usr and/or /usr/local can simply set it to: PORTS_LOCALETCDIR=/etc (or /etc/ports, whatever). Of course, the variable names are just for the illustration, I'm sure there are better names. Heresy? To throw a bit of fuel on the fire; from "man 7 hier": /etc/ system configuration files and scripts ... /usr/ contains the majority of user utilities and applications ... ... share/ architecture-independent ascii text files ... The "share" directory was intended to mean shareable between different architectures. All the "per-machine" config is documented as belonging somewhere in /etc. /usr/local is deliberately vaguely defined.. It says just "local", not "per-machine". This can mean anything from "local to the machine", to "local to the site" to "local to FreeBSD", etc. >On the flipside, there's kind of a FreeBSD layout imposed on /usr/local >for those who wish to make use of it and perhaps some re-organisation might >be made to allow per host configuration areas for those who want to nfs >export the packages installed there. Yes.. We do kinda "impose" a layout on /usr/local that forces it to be non-shareable, when everything else on /usr is (except perhaps /usr/share/man/cat*). I can live with the imposed layout in order to use the ports, even though I dont like it that much. (I prefer something more like a /wherever/pkgname/{bin|lib|etc|man} type layout :-) IMHO, certain files give me the creeps defaulting to somewhere that I rdist and have to make exclusion lists for. I dont expect I'm the only one who's working towards a replicated cluster type arrangement that doesn't involve logging into every single machine each time there's a trivial change to be made. :-) (And yes, the reason I protested so strongly about the ssh secret host keys last time was because I wasn't paying enough attention and got burned. Since day one, ssh defaulted to /etc for it's config and secret keys, and when I read the patches, it gives no clues that the Makefile (which I skipped) changes it :-( ) >-- > Paul Richards. Typically (by defacto standard) /usr/local is local to the site, not local to the individual host. I would tend to use /local for individual hosts, but /usr/local for sitewide. A site might consist of both loosely and tightly coupled hosts, and a tight cluster might represent itself as a single host within the site. The best way to resolve these issues might well be the judicious use of appropriate symbolic links. -- Adam David From owner-cvs-ports Fri Apr 26 01:18:40 1996 Return-Path: owner-cvs-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id BAA22372 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Fri, 26 Apr 1996 01:18:40 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from asami@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id BAA22349 Fri, 26 Apr 1996 01:18:27 -0700 (PDT) Date: Fri, 26 Apr 1996 01:18:27 -0700 (PDT) From: Satoshi Asami Message-Id: <199604260818.BAA22349@freefall.freebsd.org> To: CVS-committers, cvs-all, cvs-ports Subject: cvs commit: ports/japanese/platex Makefile Sender: owner-cvs-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk asami 96/04/26 01:18:26 Modified: japanese/platex Makefile Log: Some distfiles moved around.
