If you werase() the newly created window (as the patch to ncftp2 does) before writing into it, it works. This is different to SYSV curses, and IMHO, a bug... The "official" command to link with tcl7.5 last time I saw it was "-ltcl75") It shouldn't be hard to fix, and I'd love the disk space back by getting rid of one of the copies. The 2.1.5 ports collection is specific to FreeBSD 2.1.5 already, because of features that were added to the base source tree and the ports system since 2.1.0 days. With the progression towards 2.2, ports fit naturally into a 2.2 system. Someone who wants to run a 2.2 port on a 2.1 system will either have to think again and upgrade to 2.2 or retrofit the port to the 2.1 system. That's the way it's been from the start, though some ports have not required any substantial changes between release versions. I hope that I was not too verbose, or answering the wrong question. Peter, I'd really love to have the revision numbers dropped from the name, but I have been reading on the usenet tcl list, and it seems that 7.6 and 4.2 aren't that far from release. There are already officially released patches to 7.5 and 4.1. The disucssion seems to be moving on towards the release after 7.6, which looks like it will be 8.0. Unless we force folks to dump older version compatibility, the ability to have the old 7.3 and 3.6 stuff at plain tcl/tk, then it doesn't seem possible. I think that's just what should happen, myself, because it's hobbling folks that want to stay reasonably current, all the other packages have to be modified to look for our special lib names (-ltcl75). > > The next patch to the tk41 port makes it build from the tcl75 in the source > tree: > [more patches deleted] > > The TCL_SRC_DIR is used by the 'make test' code when both tcl and tk are > running in a private build directory and have not been installed yet. > Since the version in the base source is not optional, this part is > pretty much irrelevant. > > But the big question is, how much to the ports that use tcl and tk directly > need to be changed? The shlib version number should *not* be used for this purpose. (Just imagine trying to link libtcl.so.7.3 when there also is a libtcl.so.7.5.) This is because we have total control over what's in /usr/src, and can update every part of the system to use the new version when we change it. On the other hand, the ports tree is a mixed beast with a whole lot of things depending on the older version. * * * That said, the existence of libtcl.so.75.0 as tcl-7.5 has caused some problems in the ports tree. I'm not sure how well the stuff that depend on tcl-7.3 works now, can someone check it? (Especially how it's supposed to pick up the library -- since "-ltcl" now means "libtcl.so.75.0", not "libtcl.so.7.3".) I won't delete the tcl75 port yet, but we can fixing stuff now. Probably not yet, I have exchanged a few bits of email with phk, he's happy to change the library name to the "normal" one (tcl75). I think that will simplify things for the ports somewhat. To do that though, will probably require a bsd.*.mk variable to identify the link command for the current "-ltcl" for the system to use. Currently, LIBTCL?=/usr/lib/libtcl.a, we may need a new variable for the command, perhaps simply TCL?=-ltcl75 (or LTCL?) Since -ltcl{75} currently requires -lm as well, bsd.prog.mk would probably define something like: "TCL?=-ltcl75 -lm" and programs would link with "LDADD+= -lfoo -lbar ${TCL}", "DPADD+= ${LIBFOO} ${LIBBAR} ${LIBTCL}" Cheers, -Peter From owner-cvs-ports Wed Aug 21 00:50:05 1996 Return-Path: owner-cvs-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id AAA13763 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Wed, 21 Aug 1996 00:50:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: from silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU [136.152.64.181]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id AAA13643; Wed, 21 Aug 1996 00:48:36 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from asami@localhost) by silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (8.7.5/8.6.9) id AAA06690; Wed, 21 Aug 1996 00:48:17 -0700 (PDT) Date: Wed, 21 Aug 1996 00:48:17 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199608210748.AAA06690@silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU> To: peter@spinner.DIALix.COM CC: jkh@time.cdrom.com, CVS-committers@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-all@freefall.freebsd.org, cvs-ports@freefall.freebsd.org In-reply-to: <199608210738.PAA04210@spinner.DIALix.COM> (message from Peter Wemm on Wed, 21 Aug 1996 15:38:17 +0800) Subject: Re: cvs commit: ports/devel/libz/pkg COMMENT DESCR PLIST ports/devel/libz Makefile ports/devel/libz/files md5 ports/devel/libz/patches patch-aa From: asami@freebsd.org (Satoshi Asami) Sender: owner-cvs-ports@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk * Probably not yet, I have exchanged a few bits of email with phk, he's * happy to change the library name to the "normal" one (tcl75). There is going to be only one "latest" shared libtcl in /usr/lib, and everything in the system (plus ports-current) is supposed to use that. Chernov > > http://www.nagual.ru/~ache/ Might it not also apply to news and comms, and possibly even www (for encoded stuff)? Or does it really belong in misc? Technically, uuencoded data is an archive because it can contain more than one file. So there is a case for it being an archiver, but the same is probably not true for all the other encodings. Yes, I think mail or misc is best, but for different reasons. mail because of most popular use. misc because it is a general purpose encoder (typically for transmitting 8-bit data over a 7-bit datapath). -- Adam David From owner-cvs-ports Fri Aug 23 13:52:07 1996 Return-Path: owner-cvs-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id NAA10714 for cvs-ports-outgoing; Fri, 23 Aug 1996 13:52:07 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from jdp@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id NAA10604; Fri, 23 Aug 1996 13:51:47 -0700 (PDT) Date: Fri, 23 Aug 1996 13:51:47 -0700 (PDT) From: John Polstra Message-Id: <199608232051.NAA10604@freefall.freebsd.org> To: CVS-committers, cvs-all, cvs-ports Subject: cvs commit: ports/net/cvsup Makefile ports/net/cvsup/files md5 ports/net/cvsup/patches patch-aa Sender: owner-cvs-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk jdp 96/08/23 13:51:46 Modified: net/cvsup Makefile net/cvsup/files md5 net/cvsup/patches patch-aa Log: Update for release 13.3 of CVSup.
