From: Bruce Evans To: FreeBSD-gnats-submit@FreeBSD.ORG, hsu@clinet.fi Cc: Subject: Re: kern/1016: panic: vm_page_free: freeing free page, sddump: no slices Date: Sun, 11 Feb 1996 18:50:00 +1100 >>Description: >The machine was sitting dead and this was on the console: >panic: vm_page_free: freeing free page I don't know what caused this. >dumping to dev 401, offset 0 >dump Debugger("sddump: no slices") called >panic: vm_page_free: freeing free page >dumping to dev 401, offset 0 >dump Debugger("sddump: no slices") called >panic: vm_page_free: freeing free page >... The "no slices" message is probably because no minor on sd0 was opened. Normally the dump device is the same as the swap device so it gets opened by swapon(). Relevant bugs: - setdumpdev() neglects to open the dump device. - autoconf.c neglects to call setdumpdev() for the compile-time configured dump device, if any. I don't know what caused the repeated (recursive?) panics. I have tried without avail to boot up FreeBSD v. 2.1 and I have tried several of the snaps for 2.2. I keep getting the following message: ah0: WARNING no command for SCB 0 (cmdcmplt) QOUTCNT == 20 Where QOUTCNT decreases to 0 and the machine then reboots. I have tried new SCSI cables, having only one hard drive (Micropolis or Fujutsu) on the controller, running the PCI bus at 60 and 66 MHz, slowing the CPU down and even trying to go through the source code and figure out what is going on. In doing that I enabled the debugging and I noticed something that I thought peculiar... The computer seems to have problems after probing SCSI ID 7. ID 7 is the hard drive controller, so why does it probe the controller? That CD-ROM does not work under FreeBSD so I tried DOS installation instead. The system is a 486 DX4 (100Mhz) with VLB bus, 2 IDE HD's on primary IDE (WD 850Mb + WD 200Mb) while the secondary IDE is for the CD-ROM. There is a primary DOS partition of 250 Mb where I xcopy'ed the FreeBSD files from the CDROM (C:\FREEBSD\FLOPPIES, C:\FREEBSD\BIN, etc...). After booting (either from DOS or from the boot-floppy) and having completed all the path along the "NOVICE" installation, I select the installation media to be the DOS partition, after which: -- initial phase before accessing data from C:\FREEBSD seems perfectly OK, -- checksum errors are then reported as soon as C:\FREEBSD\BIN data are first accessed... every other DOS file then causes errors during read. I tried many different things, like NOT mounting the DOS partition during disk LABELling phase, or just the opposite, or activating/deactivating IDE block-transfer mode in the board and IDE adapter BIOS, without success. Also, although I have a modem-adapter installed as port 3E8 Irq 5, as supposedly defined in the FreeBSD kernel, this device is never detected. Could the Soundblaster 16 (IDE) card (no CD-ROM) be causing troubles? Thanks a lot for your help. Marcello. The version of "my" stable-sys/i386/isa/lpt.c is 1.30.4.6. It seems that the parameters in the used bpf-functions (bpfattach() in line 892 and bpf_tap() in line 1159) are more suitable for -current (or anything else 9-) than for -stable. This is as it should be, except that `ls' should probably not give you anything. It would probably work if you said `cd ./ports', given the evidence that `ls' works. The reason why this is may be made clear to you if you created a directory `foo' before mounting the cdrom. -GAWollman -- Garrett A.
