I can send you the problem card if you wish. I am currently running 2 FreeBSD 2.1 machines set up as routers. They connect 2 offices together that are located within 2 miles of each other. The connection is over 2 28.8K Motorola modems dialed into each other. Since the entire thing is local, I don't have to worry about messy stuff like making the modems dial up when there are packets to be sent, etc. I just leave the modems connected together permanently, since the phone line is a fixed cost whether it is used or not. The machines are almost identical, the only difference is that the disk in one is a 160MB connor, in the other is a 250MB Quantum. They are both IDE disks. Anyway, when I set the machines up, I used the following configuration: 486/33 8MB RAM Trident VGA (garden variety VGA card) integrated serial/parallel/IDE controller cards, no-name clones using 8250 uarts (non-buffered) Intel EtherExpress16 network cards I use cu on one machine to dial the modem to connect to the other, once the modems are connected I exit cu and start up pppd. The remote machine has pppd set to run at startup. When the pppd daemons are talking to each other, I telnet into the remote router and insert a static route, then return to the first and put in another static route. It ain't elegant, but once the line is up it doesen't go down so who cares. Anyway, when I first set up the connection, I was running the ports at 9600bps because I knew that without a buffered port card I wasn't going to get any more throughput. I actually had ordered buffered versions of the IDE combo cards, but they were slow getting in. The line worked fine, round trip ping times were about 500ms. I discovered that routed didn't like to send updates back and forth over a serial line, so hence the need for the static routes. (I don't know if this is a bug or a feature) Anyway, a week or so after the line was in the buffered port cards arrived. I replaced the non-buffered cards, and raised the speed in /etc/ppp/options to 38400 and turned on flow control. I was never able to get it running with those cards. Oh, I could talk to the modems fine with cu, get them connected, but the pppd's on each end refused to negotiate. Finally I played musical chairs with the combo cards, and everything started working. The only difference in configuration was the different serial/parallel/IDE controller cards. Round trip ping times are now 200ms. The broken buffered combo cards work fine under OS/2, Windoze, etc. They just don't seem to work under FreeBSD. Oh, it LOOKS like they work, at least if you run cu they seem to work, but pppd WON'T work at all with them! The following is what is on the bad card: Winbond model W83777, FCC Identification ID2-W837787AA There are 2 large chips on the card, they are marked: Winbond W83787F and W83758F I was able to get it running with the following cards: card1) Kowell model KW-557 The chip on this is: SMC FDC37C666GT A9444-B247 6J74183-2 card2) UMC something-or-other. (sorry, if you really want the ID#'s I get them, but I didn't write them down) At any rate, both the bad cards and the good cards are identified as 16550A's buffered serial ports by MSD. Also, just for the RTFM types, yes I did make sure the little DB-25 pigtails went with the appropriate cards, the modem cables had all handshaking lines, the modems were properly programmed to pay attention to flow control lines, etc etc, etc. Also, the kernel does NOT emit overflow messages, and I DID change sio.c to raise the buffer size mentioned in a hardware FAQ message on www.freebsd.org. Also, YES the kernel thinks the broken cards are 16550A cards. I have one of these Winbond cards sitting on my desk, and if anyone wants to attempt to debug the serial driver I'll be happy to send them the card to test with. It is quite obvious the problem is that the sio driver is dropping characters under heavy usage with this card. I don't know why it is working with the SMC or UMC cards and not with the Winbond card. I'd also suggest a notation on this be put into the hardware list warning people not to buy these combo cards. Another thing I discovered that I think is a bug is with pppd. When pppd starts up, it should send out a before sending out the PPP negotiation sequence. The reason for this is that modems that lock their serial ports to the computer port use a character to determine the correct port speed to synchronize to. If I reboot the remote machine and power cycle it's modem, pppd loads and sends out it's LCP string, since this doesen't contain a carriage return, the modem serial port will stay at whatever it's power-up default setting is. (definitely NOT 38400bps!!!) One last thing I discovered with the SMC serial port card, is that if I set the port speed to 57600 it sometimes locks up the machine. This is probably because 57600 is too ambitious a speed for a 486/33 Unix box. I don't know if the bugs occur in all 8669F's. The FDC sometimes interrupts early. This happens to cause long busy-waits, timeouts, failed retries and eventually data loss under FreeBSD-current. The UART always loses sync if the speed is set or the fifo enable bit is changed while data is arriving. The problem is most noticable for applications that set the speed a lot, e.g., uucp. How does SunOS 4.X work? When I use the kadb is SunOS 4.X, it shows the right symbol for a loadable driver. In fact, an engineer in my company already modified modload and lkm in FreeBSD 2.0.5. lkm calls X_db_sym_init() to notify ddb where the symbol table is. This sort of works. But it is not stable. That is why we would like to see experts in FreeBSD to engineer a fix to this problem. If you want to get our code as a starting point, we may be able to send it to you (if the management approves). Organization: Clinet Ltd, Espoo, Finland Sender: owner-bugs@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk We have been having really bad time with FreeBSD 2.* series since we went into it. Most of the trouble we have sorted out already, but one machine (busy news server) kept deadlocking and crashing, several times a day at worst. Typical problem was a deadlock, either filesystem deadlock or complete deadlock. Sometimes we got "tsleep" panics, sometimes other panics. More often it fails to cleanly panic and requires manual reboot. The machine was also running our HP550C (ascii and PS with ghostscript) connected to its parallel port. I have been moving services out of the machine one by one, and what finally seems to have hit was moving the printer out of it. There has been no crash for last 48 hours, and, more importantly, the machine we moved the printer into deadlocked within 4 hours, and crashed thrice within next 24 hours. Previously it had been relatively stable, crashing at most once a week. The reason why I replaced printer now and not within a month was that we replaced NCR SCSI controllers with Adapteks to see if that would help, and printing stopped working altogether. Replacing SCSI controllers did not have any other effect. The old machine is ASUS SIS Pentium, new machine ASUS Triton Pentium. The printer port have been configured into "normal" mode. There was absolutely no sign that it would be the printer which is the source of problem. It didn't crash when printer was used, nor it did have any connection to the amount of printer use. The only hint is that moving the printer also moved the crashes. I haven't seen crashes with the machine our second parallel printer is connected, but that's a VLS (Very Low Speed) matrix printer we use for labels. After I go to bed the old machine will probably crash and ruin my fancy theory :-) -- Heikki Suonsivu, T{ysikuu 10 C 83/02210 Espoo/FINLAND, hsu@clinet.fi mobile +358-40-5519679 work +358-0-4375360 fax -4555276 home -8031121 From owner-freebsd-bugs Wed Mar 13 11:50:58 1996 Return-Path: owner-bugs Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id LAA19290 for bugs-outgoing; Wed, 13 Mar 1996 11:50:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from ki.net (root@ki.net [142.77.249.8]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id LAA19273 for ; Wed, 13 Mar 1996 11:50:41 -0800 (PST) Received: (from scrappy@localhost) by ki.net (8.7.4/8.7.4) id OAA07442; Wed, 13 Mar 1996 14:49:16 -0500 (EST) Date: Wed, 13 Mar 1996 14:49:15 -0500 (EST) From: "Marc G. Look at section 8.6 of the FAQ: 8.6. I have 128 MB of RAM but it seems that the system use only the first 64 MB. What's going on ? Due to the manner in which FreeBSD gets the memory size from the BIOS, it can only detect 16 bits worth of Kbytes in size (65535 Kbytes = 64MB). If you have more than 64MB, FreeBSD will only see the first 64MB. To work around this problem, you need to use the kernel option specified below. There is a way to get complete memory information from the BIOS, but we don't have room in the bootblocks to do it. Someday when lack of room in the bootblocks is fixed, we'll use the extended BIOS functions to get the full memory information...but for now we're stuck with the kernel option. _________________________________________________________________ options "MAXMEM=" _________________________________________________________________ Where n is your memory in Kilobytes. I've got an Intel i386/33 with a Cyrix 387 running FreeBSD-2.1.0-RELEASE. (run's great, no problems). I was given a Cyrix DLC-486/33 Chip by a friend. the problem is that when I put the 486 and the 387 in the box at the same time, FreeBSD won't boot, it stops right after checking npx0. The 486 chip works fine without the 387. Is this a FreeBSD problem, or am I just an idiot who's forgotten something. Thanks very much. ...alex... Also, perhaps someone who knows more about hardware than I could answer this. If I'm screwed and can't run the 486 and the 387 together, which setup should I use: the 386/387 combination or the 486/no fpu combo? I did some benchmarking and the 387/387 came up faster, but those only test integer/floating point calculations. -- Alex Tang altitude@cic.net http://petrified.cic.net/~altitude Viz-It!: Software Developer, http://vizit.cic.net CICNet: Unix Support / Info Services / Programmer, http://www.cic.net From owner-freebsd-bugs Thu Mar 14 10:17:32 1996 Return-Path: owner-bugs Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id KAA23116 for bugs-outgoing; Thu, 14 Mar 1996 10:17:32 -0800 (PST) Received: from beta.internetional.com.br ([200.241.232.250]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id KAA23111 for ; Thu, 14 Mar 1996 10:17:24 -0800 (PST) Received: (from wagner@localhost) by beta.internetional.com.br (8.6.12/8.6.12) id QAA00262 for freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org; Thu, 14 Mar 1996 16:17:27 -0300 Date: Thu, 14 Mar 1996 16:17:27 -0300 From: Wagner Ikeda Message-Id: <199603141917.QAA00262@beta.internetional.com.br> To: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Subject: trouble with IDE + SCSI (Adaptec2940) Sender: owner-bugs@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hello, I am having problems with the following configuration: 2.1.0 Adaptec 2940 Seagate 15150W 4Gb SCSI Western D. 1Gb EIDE The system is 100% FreeBSD. I installed a boot manager on EIDE disk (2940 doc says the boot device have to be the IDE when both IDE and SCSI are present), which tries to boot from SCSI. The process goes ok until the / partition is mounted. At this point the system panics, because it tries to mount sd1, not sd0. I thought I could switch the disk to SCSI ID 1 and have it detected as sd1, but its not true, it remains as sd0. At this moment I have the system working, but with EIDE disk turned off. You should be able to find it in the mailing list archives, the subject was booting from sd5 when wd3 is also installed In addition, you could wire down the SCSI disk at ID 2 to be recognized by FreeBSD as sd3 (and thus match the BIOS' idea). I assume sd2(0,a)/kernel.... Or does it come up by default and use sd3? both are wrong.. using the new bootblock code bruce submitted the correct thing to say would be: 3:sd2(0,a)/kernel but as you don't have the new code..... the problem is that it's disk 4 from the BIOS's point of view but only the 3rd SCSI disk.. so they disagree about the minor number to use.. I've made some new bootblocks for you that SHOULD do the right thing.... If you want to try the new bootblocks, you can do the following: 1/ disable the wd drive in the bios 2/ use a bootblock on an install floppy.. specify sd2... ---boot the system--- 3/ get the new bootblock code, I can make some new bootblocks for you if you wish... 4/ use disklabel -B sd2 to put on the new bootblocks. I'll put a copy of them in ftp://ref.tfs.com:/incoming/boot1 and ftp://ref.tfs.com:/incoming/boot2 reenable the wd drive before trying the new blocks..... let me know how this works.... use the 'hd' option (which should be default) julian > > Alan. > From owner-freebsd-bugs Fri Mar 15 19:35:23 1996 Return-Path: owner-bugs Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id TAA26033 for bugs-outgoing; Fri, 15 Mar 1996 19:35:23 -0800 (PST) Received: from petrified.cic.net (altitude@petrified.cic.net [192.131.22.11]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id TAA26019 for ; Fri, 15 Mar 1996 19:35:17 -0800 (PST) Received: (from altitude@localhost) by petrified.cic.net (8.7.5/8.7.3(CICNet)) id WAA20882 for freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org; Fri, 15 Mar 1996 22:34:44 -0500 (EST) Message-Id: <199603160334.WAA20882@petrified.cic.net> Subject: npx0/Cyrix DLC486/Cyrix 80387 To: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Date: Fri, 15 Mar 1996 22:34:43 -0500 (EST) From: Alex Tang X-PGP-Fingerprint: 1C 2A 38 B6 53 A4 0F 8E 5E 31 D2 76 B9 6E F7 4A X-PGP-Comment: Finger altitude@cic.net for PGP info X-URL: http://petrified.cic.net/~altitude X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-bugs@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi folks. I haven't had time to do any real world benchmark testing... -- Alex Tang altitude@cic.net http://petrified.cic.net/~altitude Viz-It!: Software Developer, http://vizit.cic.net CICNet: Unix Support / Info Services / Programmer, http://www.cic.net From owner-freebsd-bugs Fri Mar 15 23:04:27 1996 Return-Path: owner-bugs Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id XAA09873 for bugs-outgoing; Fri, 15 Mar 1996 23:04:27 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail.barrnet.net (mail.barrnet.net [131.119.246.7]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id XAA09844 for ; Fri, 15 Mar 1996 23:04:19 -0800 (PST) Received: from mpp.minn.net (mpp.Minn.Net [204.157.201.242]) by mail.barrnet.net (8.7.4/MAIL-RELAY-LEN) with ESMTP id XAA24762 for ; Fri, 15 Mar 1996 23:04:16 -0800 (PST) Received: (from mpp@localhost) by mpp.minn.net (8.7.3/8.6.9) id BAA17604 for freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org; Sat, 16 Mar 1996 01:00:26 -0600 (CST) Message-Id: <199603160700.BAA17604@mpp.minn.net> Subject: syscons cursor moves to wrong line To: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Date: Sat, 16 Mar 1996 01:00:26 -0600 (CST) From: "Mike Pritchard" X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL25 ME8b] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-bugs@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk I've been noticing a problem with my syscons cursor somewhat frequently lately. Sometimes when I enter or exit elm, the cursor will be positioned one line above where it should be. E.g. if I am typing, the text appears on the correct line, but the cursor is on the line above that. Sometimes re-entering elm and exiting will get it back to the correct line. I recall seeing this a few times a long long time ago, but it seems to be happening a lot lately (twice in the last 5 minutes now, and the 4th time today). I was given a Cyrix DLC-486/33 Chip by a > friend. the problem is that when I put the 486 and the 387 in the box at > the same time, FreeBSD won't boot, it stops right after checking npx0. > The 486 chip works fine without the 387. Is this a FreeBSD problem, or am > I just an idiot who's forgotten something. I had this problem with my old 386sx/16 and 387 system. Both chips are made by Intel, but for some reason, executing an fnsave instruction would cause my system to wedge. (The npx.c code does an fnsave as during boot as part of the FPU initialization, and again in the interrupt handler. Debugging showed that it was hanging right at the first fnsave.) This was true of FreeBSD, NetBSD and even 386bsd 0.1. The only way I could get the system to boot was by removing the 387 chip. Annoyingly enough, I used to be able to run Linux on the same machine just fine. Anyway, after some tinkering, I came up with the following patch to /sys/i386/isa/npx.c: 71c71 < #define fnsave(addr) __asm("fnsave %0" : "=m" (*(addr))) --- > #define fnsave(addr) __asm("fnsave %0; fninit" : "=m" (*(addr))) All this does is cause an fninit instruction to be executed immediately after the fnsave instruction. This fixed most of my problems and allowed me to boot FreeBSD on the 386sx system without any trouble. (I've had to do this for every version of FreeBSD since 1.1.) The strange thing is that the fnsave instruction is also supposed to perform an fninit, so in theory this step shouldn't be needed. But without it, I'm toast. Note that this is not a real fix since it is still possible for a user-level program to wedge the system again by executing an fnsave instruction by itself. (Bruce Evans once sent me a sample program to excersize the 387 that can do it.) Also, I have yet to find another machine exhibiting the same behavior where this change made any difference. So far, it seems specific to my hardware, which is why I normally add it to my sources with an #ifdef SKYNET around it. Anyway, try this: put the 387 chip back in and boot with the -c flag. At the userconfig menu, disable npx0 and then try to continue booting. This is what I do to install new versions of FreeBSD on the 386 these days; disabling npx0 allows the kernel to boot and gives me a chance to patch npx.c. Try doing the same: add the fninit instruction and recompile the kernel. Then try booting the new kernel with npx0 enabled. If you're having the same hardware problem I am, it might just work this time. If it doesn't you might consider adding some debugging printf()s to the npx initialization code to see where it is hanging. This is how I originally traced down my problem. Hope this helps. -Bill -- ============================================================================= -Bill Paul (212) 854-6020 | System Manager Work: wpaul@ctr.columbia.edu | Center for Telecommunications Research Home: wpaul@skynet.ctr.columbia.edu | Columbia University, New York City ============================================================================= License error: The license for this .sig file has expired.
