The problem is because the boot manager expects that only drives 0x80 (C:) and 0x81 (D:) will be accessable through the INT 13 interface it uses to load the second stage boot for the bootable OS's you have installed. You would need a hacked INT 13 BIOS to handle drives other than C: and D:, and you would need a boot selector hacked to know about your hacked BIOS. If you're interested and you have a PostScript printer, you can pick it up from freefall.FreeBSD.org:/incoming/shortbook.tar.gz. There'll be a new "final" version there some time tomorrow. One thing that might interest you, since this arrived here dated October 14, 1996: to set the system time, enter # date 01200905 The # is the super-user prompt. The number is 2 digits month (January), 2 digits day (20), 2 digits hour (in 24 hour form: 9 am), and 2 digits minute (5). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Greg Lehey LEMIS grog@lemis.de Schellnhausen 2 Tel: +49-6637-919123 36325 Feldatal Fax: +49-6637-919122 Germany From owner-freebsd-doc Sat Jan 20 10:57:39 1996 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id KAA12737 for doc-outgoing; Sat, 20 Jan 1996 10:57:39 -0800 (PST) Received: from lrcser.lrcser.it (root@[194.184.120.220]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id KAA12732 for ; Sat, 20 Jan 1996 10:57:36 -0800 (PST) Received: from ttys2.lrcser.it (ttys2.lrcser.it [194.184.120.232]) by lrcser.lrcser.it (8.6.11/8.6.9) with SMTP id UAA14729 for ; Sat, 20 Jan 1996 20:00:51 +0100 Message-Id: <199601201900.UAA14729@lrcser.lrcser.it> From: Silvio Cerati Date: Sat, 20 Jan 96 19:47:25 -800 To: doc@freebsd.org Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Mozilla/1.0N (Windows) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Sender: owner-doc@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk From owner-freebsd-doc Sat Jan 20 11:56:52 1996 Return-Path: owner-doc Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id LAA15988 for doc-outgoing; Sat, 20 Jan 1996 11:56:52 -0800 (PST) Received: from cls.net (freeside.cls.de [192.129.50.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id LAA15980 Sat, 20 Jan 1996 11:56:47 -0800 (PST) Received: by mail.cls.net (Smail3.1.29.1) from allegro.lemis.de (192.109.197.134) with smtp id ; Sat, 20 Jan 96 17:11 GMT From: grog@lemis.de (Greg Lehey) Organisation: LEMIS, Schellnhausen 2, 36325 Feldatal, Germany Phone: +49-6637-919123 Fax: +49-6637-919122 Reply-To: grog@lemis.de (Greg Lehey) Received: (grog@localhost) by allegro.lemis.de (8.6.9/8.6.9) id SAA20327; Sat, 20 Jan 1996 18:12:14 +0100 Message-Id: <199601201712.SAA20327@allegro.lemis.de> Subject: What printed documentation do we need? In particular: 1. For the most part, the user's guide stuff supplied with the system is so out-of-date that it's not worth printing. This stuff is available from O'Reilly already, including a number of files we're not allowed to distribute. 2. There's a *lot* of documentation. The man pages alone come to over 3000 pages. 3. There's a lot of stuff in source form. At a guess, I'd say that it would be easy enough to produce 10,000 pages of supplementary documentation from the other sources. I don't think this is a particularly Good Idea. So, the question: which other documentation should be in paper form? For a gut feel, I'd say we could handle another 1500 to 2000 pages. Greg
