Streamworks client/server uses mpeg layer 1&2 for video/audio compression, and will play back normal mpegaudio encoded streams just peachy. So there is hope for the format! Think about it, you can seek a 90meter DAT end to end in under 60 seconds, and at 4GB of data on that dat, you get about 4000 minutes of audio on one DAT.
