When using ghostview for example, the default is US, but you are able to change it to a4 easily. gs then automaticallyy gets the correct options from ghostview. Use apsfilter as printfilter, it also calls gs with the proper settings for papersize... I really don't see the use for it. Please tell me ! But understandable please ;) BTW: some other exciting positive comments about the new config look and feel :-( Looks like I have missed something :-( Andreas /// -- andreas@klemm.gtn.com /\/\___ Wiechers & Partner Datentechnik GmbH Andreas Klemm ___/\/\/ Support Unix -- andreas.klemm@wup.de pgp p-key http://www-swiss.ai.mit.edu/~bal/pks-toplev.html >>> powered by <<< ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/Printing/aps-491.tgz >>> FreeBSD <<< From owner-freebsd-ports Sun Jul 21 16:40:11 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id QAA03432 for ports-outgoing; Sun, 21 Jul 1996 16:40:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: from eng3.iastate.edu (eng3.iastate.edu [129.186.1.112]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id QAA03421; Sun, 21 Jul 1996 16:40:08 -0700 (PDT) Received: by eng3.iastate.edu with sendmail-5.65 id ; Sun, 21 Jul 1996 18:40:06 -0500 Message-Id: <9607212340.AA07249@eng3.iastate.edu> To: ports@FreeBSD.org, questions@FreeBSD.org Subject: I need help in installing this package. Interviews is much more than just a library, so just installing the library alone will certainly not get you the Interviews build environment. Their makefiles are kinda goofy, because they go to a lot of trouble trying to make a pseudo-namespace. I guess the Interviews programmers came from an environment with a great amount of control over namespaces, and in their comments, they grouse a lot over this not being available in C and C++, so they get what they want by some horrible include files, that put "iv" in front of all their exported functions, instead of just letting the programmer see the iv in the first place. This trick of theirs made porting interviews to new environments a major pain, because that's the feature that screws up the most. Anyhow, use the interviews port in /usr/ports/x11/iv, and install it from there. You CAN'T get away just with the library, and you MUST have a full x11 enviroment available (like the XFree86 stuff). To tell you the truth, if you're going to be doing any development at all using interviews, I'd go buy the O'Reilly Imake book and read it, because you're going to need to know a bit more about imakefiles. It won't be that bad, but you won't get away without a little study here. ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- Chuck Robey | Interests include any kind of voice or data chuckr@eng.umd.edu | communications topic, C programming, and Unix. 9120 Edmonston Ct #302 | Greenbelt, MD 20770 | I run Journey2 and n3lxx, both FreeBSD (301) 220-2114 | version 2.2 current -- and great FUN! ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- From owner-freebsd-ports Sun Jul 21 19:43:30 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id TAA10353 for ports-outgoing; Sun, 21 Jul 1996 19:43:30 -0700 (PDT) Received: from bdd.net (bdd.net [207.61.119.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id TAA10348 for ; Sun, 21 Jul 1996 19:43:27 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (james@localhost) by bdd.net (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id WAA14854 for ; Sun, 21 Jul 1996 22:43:25 -0400 (EDT) Date: Sun, 21 Jul 1996 22:43:24 -0400 (EDT) From: James FitzGibbon To: ports@freebsd.org Subject: Update to mSQL, take two Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Apologies, but I took the wrong release from the local repository when I made the update to the mSQL port earlier today. Comments welcome! The author addresses that in the README. mSQL is part of Minerva, a object-based networking system that includes ESL (a C-like script language), w3-msql (HTML extensions for mSQL), and the core controller (which isn't public yet). The author recommends that if you are going to use any of the other ports, you should keep the prefix as /usr/local/Minerva, since they are designed to "live" together. Coincidentally, ESL and w3-msql are my next planned ports. 8-) -- j. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | James FitzGibbon james@nexis.net | | Integrator, The Nexis Group Voice/Fax : 416 410-0100 | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From owner-freebsd-ports Mon Jul 22 09:03:25 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id JAA13696 for ports-outgoing; Mon, 22 Jul 1996 09:03:25 -0700 (PDT) Received: from kaiwan009.kaiwan.com (kaiwan009.kaiwan.com [198.178.203.9]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id JAA13687 for ; Mon, 22 Jul 1996 09:03:23 -0700 (PDT) Received: from northstar (kaiwan179.kaiwan.com [198.178.203.179]) by kaiwan009.kaiwan.com (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id JAA13061 for ; Mon, 22 Jul 1996 09:03:20 -0700 (PDT) *** KAIWAN Internet *** Message-ID: <31F3A7CA.41C67EA6@kaiwan.com> Date: Mon, 22 Jul 1996 09:09:46 -0700 From: "L. Ok, let's discuss that now, but ... I was aware of this ... The reason for me not to change the default path and program name (/usr/local/bin/gs) was, that all ghostscript ports in the past did it the same way and I didn't want to break something ... For example ghostview looks for /usr/local/bin/gs and _not_ gs4 or whatelse ... I think, that the ordinary ghostscript user doesn't look or differentiate between different copyright (GNU / Aladdin) I think the user only wants the latest and greatest version. It's _not_ like in tcl / tk, where you sometimes need older program versions, since it's not fully backward compatible ... I vote for _not_ to differentiate in different gs versions: /usr/local/bin/gs /usr/local/bin/gs3 /usr/local/bin/gs4 Say NO ;-) Any comments ?! Surely some ?! This has been one of the enhancements on my TODO list for a long time. It happens for more things than just ghostscript, after all, and the typical trap with the current tools is to install versions A, B and C of some utility. At some point, you decide that you don't need the dreck from A and B around and you pkg_delete then, handily wiping out the shared files for C in the process ("where'd my emacs go?!") :-) If there was proper checksumming, the new binaries for C would stay and only those which weren't replaced in A and B would go. Like I said, it's been on my TODO list for a long time. :-) I'd always wanted to simply re-write the tools rather than add enhancements like this, but I guess at this point I might consider the enhacement instead. AFTER I take my post-2.1.5 vacation, that is. :-) Jordan From owner-freebsd-ports Wed Jul 24 16:22:55 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id QAA23823 for ports-outgoing; Wed, 24 Jul 1996 16:22:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: from baloon.mimi.com (sjx-ca24-19.ix.netcom.com [204.30.65.179]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id QAA23818; Wed, 24 Jul 1996 16:22:51 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from asami@localhost) by baloon.mimi.com (8.7.5/8.6.12) id QAA01004; Wed, 24 Jul 1996 16:22:31 -0700 (PDT) Date: Wed, 24 Jul 1996 16:22:31 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199607242322.QAA01004@baloon.mimi.com> To: se@zpr.uni-koeln.de CC: stesin@elvisti.kiev.ua, andreas@klemm.gtn.com, jhs@freebsd.org, ports@freebsd.org In-reply-to: <199607241005.MAA15006@x14.mi.uni-koeln.de> (message from Stefan Esser on Wed, 24 Jul 1996 12:05:34 +0200 (MET DST)) Subject: Re: print/gs4 From: asami@cs.berkeley.edu (Satoshi Asami) Sender: owner-ports@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk * Maybe we should have some checksum (md5 ?) * of each file installed from a port or * package in the "+CONTENTS" file ? * * Before removing any file of a package, * all the checksums could be verified, * and a warning printed for all files that * fail the test. It is a "bells-and-whistles" package with everything. > What have others done? How much disk space will I need? Thanks for > any pointers you can give me. It all installs very cleanly in its own directory, and this is about 64MB. It also wants wishx (=tcl/tk/tclX), and I do not know off hand how big that lot is. If you do not need xtexsh under X, you can comment out this requirement in the ports Makefile. Good luck! It's packages are up-to-date, and it's complete. (It takes about 30 MBytes of disk space.) For this reasons as well as numerous others (see the FEATURES file of the distribution) a lot of people use teTeX. BTW: It's the core of the TeX Live CD recently launched by Sebasthian Rahtz at the last European TeX users meeting. A lot of well-known (La)TeX gurus use teTeX, and Thomas Esser has been invited by Michael Goosens of CERN to install his TeX distribution on CERN's worldwide 3000 host multi-platform network next month. So you can be sure that teTeX is really cool stuff. -Bernd From owner-freebsd-ports Thu Jul 25 23:55:56 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id XAA02941 for ports-outgoing; Thu, 25 Jul 1996 23:55:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ghpc6.ihf.rwth-aachen.de (ghpc6.ihf.RWTH-Aachen.DE [134.130.90.6]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id XAA02935 for ; Thu, 25 Jul 1996 23:55:53 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from thomas@localhost) by ghpc6.ihf.rwth-aachen.de (8.6.12/8.6.9) id IAA12857; Fri, 26 Jul 1996 08:53:39 +0200 From: Thomas Gellekum Message-Id: <199607260653.IAA12857@ghpc6.ihf.rwth-aachen.de> Subject: Re: Which tex To: imp@village.org (Warner Losh) Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1996 08:53:38 +0200 (MET DST) Cc: ports@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: <199607260415.WAA01344@rover.village.org> from Warner Losh at "Jul 25, 96 10:15:39 pm" Organization: Institut f. Takes about 40 MB on my system currently, including fonts built on the fly for the dvi drivers. The package (built on current) is in ~tg/teTeX-0.3.4.tgz on freefall, if Satoshi hasn't moved it over to the ftp area yet. If you don't need xtexsh (or whatever this is called, I never used it; it's supposed to be some kind of integrated development environment for TeX) you can ignore the dependency on tclX. tg From owner-freebsd-ports Fri Jul 26 01:18:11 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id BAA07555 for ports-outgoing; Fri, 26 Jul 1996 01:18:11 -0700 (PDT) Received: from sole.media.it (sole.media.it [194.184.128.2]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id BAA07532 for ; Fri, 26 Jul 1996 01:18:03 -0700 (PDT) Received: from line22.media.it by sole.media.it (NTMail 3.01.03) id ea001174; Fri, 26 Jul 1996 10:18:29 +0200 Message-ID: <31F87F15.699D@mailbox.media.it> Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1996 10:17:25 +0200 From: Gianni Buonsante Organization: Gianni Buonsante X-Mailer: Mozilla 2.01Gold (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-ports@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Info on FLAGSHIP Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi Friends who know flagship ? A simple cat /var/db/pkg/*/+CONTENTS | grep -v "^@" | sort | uniq -d generates a list of files used by more than one package. (Well, you could get more fancy then that, I just wanted to have a rough estimate of the time required to check this from the existing +CONTENTS files). Yes. I guess this is best done by having two names for each package. One long name with the version, and one "Class" name, that is valid for all the releases of that package. (It is a single ID for all packages that share the same set of executable names and config file names. The US and export versions of PGP ought to have the same "short" package name, for example.) I did never like the fact, that I had to know the exact release name for a package I was going to delete. This does always require a lookup of the full name in the /var/db/pkg directory ... It should suffice top say "pkg_delete bash" for example to remove the package "bash-1.14.6" (or was it bash-1.14-6 :-) ... Everything up to the last "-" is the "class" and the rest is the version. The version numbers are pretty standardized too, but unfortunately the current rules aren't good enough to make them sort in order (in particular, 'a'/'b' which usually mean "alpha"/"beta" sort before numbers), so you can't just say "delete everything but the latest version" or "add the newest package". I noticed that no one had made a port of xv 3.10a, so I went ahead and created one. xv is shareware, which means that if you use it, the author wants money. I play around with it from time to time to amuse myself, but don't use it seriously for anything. It can't be placed on a cdrom, since that is considered, by the author, to be a commercial use. I think I managed to reflect these things in the Makefile. The port can be found on freefall.freebsd.org in ~imp/xv-3.10a-port.tar.gz. I wasn't sure where to upload it otherwise. This is a learning experience for me, so please let me know if I've committed a breach of protocol.
