I send some patches to Gary Palmer (the port maintainer of amanda) some time ago, but didn't receive a response. I found out, that one has to fiddle around much with amanda. The docu doesn't fit FreeBSD paths and devices much and such things. Additionally I found out, that some paths could be configured more suitable to BSD 4.4 paths. Gary, since the topic comes up here again, could you please tell me, if you got my patches and if you think that it's worth, to include some or all of them ?! BTW, I didn't get amanda working out of the box as well. Could the port be changed, that the amount of work, to get it up and running decreases to a small amount of work ? It would be fine, Gary, if you could check and perhaps merge my changes, since you are certainly someone, who got it running and who could deceide faster than I if the patches are ok, or if I have broken something. Although I think not. Don't ask me, which error messages I got. I started to patch the amanda port, because it wasnÄt working out of the box. Just for the case, that someone want's to see, what I 'hacked' in this port, here again the diffs. While having _any_ new port has its merits, please comment on the following: 1) The ports collection on FreeBSD always tracks CURRENT, not older releases. 2) FreeBSD already has a DES library - in libdes - and this is the DES library that was written for SSLeay. To install it, you need to install FreeBSD's secure/distribution: (ftp://ftp.internat.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD//des/des??) If you are running an older FreeBSD, you will need to get the most recent DES (from 2.2-*). M -- Mark Murray PGP key fingerprint = 80 36 6E 40 83 D6 8A 36 This .sig is umop ap!sdn. Ultimately, I'm not sure whether I want to prune this makefile or have the changes added to the standard bsd.port.mk. Because make has to be used to work out the distfile requirements and bsd.port.mk is huge, processing the 640 or so ports that I have here takes several minutes. Anyway, if anyone has the time or inclination, I'd really appreciate some feedback. To do 'stale' distfile detection, make a copy of bsd.port.mk in the same directory as the 'pib.tcl' file, and add the following lines to the bottom : list-distfiles: @echo DIST_SUBDIR ${DIST_SUBDIR} @echo DISTFILES ${DISTFILES} -- ]] Mike Smith, Software Engineer msmith@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] Genesis Software genesis@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] High-speed data acquisition and (GSM mobile) 0411-222-496 [[ ]] realtime instrument control. This looks as if somebody stupidly assumed the Perl gods are DingTRT. They aren't. The entire suidperl patches for BSD they've been emitting don't work. The only thing that works is dropping support for Posix saved IDs (which was the source of the known suidperl evil in the first place), and use a similar configuration as the Perl4 in the base code uses. /usr/bin/suidperl _does_ work, and it's believed to not have the recent security hole. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-ports Mon Nov 25 02:29:51 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id CAA05935 for ports-outgoing; Mon, 25 Nov 1996 02:29:51 -0800 (PST) Received: from grackle.grondar.za (grackle.grondar.za [196.7.18.131]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id CAA05744; Mon, 25 Nov 1996 02:29:13 -0800 (PST) Received: from grackle.grondar.za (localhost.grondar.za [127.0.0.1]) by grackle.grondar.za (8.8.3/8.7.3) with ESMTP id MAA07431; Mon, 25 Nov 1996 12:27:27 +0200 (SAT) Message-Id: <199611251027.MAA07431@grackle.grondar.za> To: J Wunsch cc: ports@freebsd.org, hackers@freebsd.org, rhh@ct.picker.com (Randall Hopper) Subject: Re: suidperl (v5.003) - Doesn't work, Any Tips? Because I can't obtain DIST_SUBDIR from the md5 file, this is a little fragile; in particular 'blas' and 'linpack' have distfiles with the same names, so they generate some diagnostics and it errs on the side of not calling them stale. (This also means that a distfile that moved from a subdir to another subdir or the main distfile directory would not be considered 'stale'. I think that this is fairly unlikely without a name change...) Anyway, if anyone has a more populated distfiles collection than the hundred or so that I have, or who just wants to keep up to date, ftp://gsoft.com.au/pub/pib.tcl.gz all you need is Tcl/Tk installed; I'm using an old wish4.0 to keep things as standard and boring as possible. -- ]] Mike Smith, Software Engineer msmith@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] Genesis Software genesis@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] High-speed data acquisition and (GSM mobile) 0411-222-496 [[ ]] realtime instrument control. "ran it again" as in exited and restarted, or just selected "stale" from the menu? There's code in there to cache the list of distfiles that should probably be ripped out; I was under the misapprehension that I could maintain internal state consistent with external state, and collecting the list of distfiles takes much less time than I thought it would. > It also seems to misidentify stale tarballs that live in > subdirectories of distfiles/ and flattens them all out. That's because I'm using the 'md5' files to get the names of all possible distfiles from each port, but there's no way of determining the value of DIST_SUBDIR from this file, so the logic goes like this : set match [array names distfiles $md5_name]; if {$match == ""} { set match [array names distfiles \*/$md5_name]; } ie. if it doesn't exist in the base distfiles directory, I'll accept it living in _any_ subdirectory. IMHO that's Bad, but there's no policy (yet) that gives me anything better to go on. On reflection, I think the best possible policy would be to insist that distfiles should either be in the base directory, or a directory that matches the directory name the port is in. Eg. the port in ports/foo/bar would have distfiles in ports/distfiles _or_ in ports/distfiles/bar. I'm not sure if this is potentially icky though; I'm only thinking about it from my point of view. The altenative seems to be to put the DIST_SUBDIR value in the md5 file (or somewhere else easy to get), which is an annoying duplication of information. > Jordan -- ]] Mike Smith, Software Engineer msmith@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] Genesis Software genesis@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] High-speed data acquisition and (GSM mobile) 0411-222-496 [[ ]] realtime instrument control. I'm sleepy now so use it with caution. ;) Some of the DISTDIR -> _DISTDIR stuff is taken from a mail I got from Max a while ago. It also includes Bill Fenner's suggestion to improve messages printed out for ignored ports. In particular, if anyone knows how to get things like .if ${BROKEN} == yes to work when ${BROKEN} might have something like `;' in there, I would appreciate it. Satoshi Note you need to hand-edit your md5 file to add ${DIST_SUBDIR}/ in front for this to work. We look slightly less like an alpha-release Tk program now. - Distfile browser with a single set of status for all distfiles, rather than several list windows recomputed every time. - Better caching of distfile status, with a 'Rescan' option. - The "read DESCR" function now has a button of it's own ('?') rather than being summoned on double-click of the port title. - "delete stale distfiles" function (disabled by default). This version assumes that the pathnames in the files/md5 file are relative to /usr/ports/distfiles, which will not normally be the case unless you've applied Satoshi's recent patch, hence the 'delete' function being disabled. (Otherwise, any distfiles in a subdirectory would be blown away). I plan to test that patch just as soon as I can, or Satoshi can at an appropriate time where it won't cause grief for the million or so other ports users out there 8) -- ]] Mike Smith, Software Engineer msmith@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] Genesis Software genesis@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] High-speed data acquisition and (GSM mobile) 0411-222-496 [[ ]] realtime instrument control. It would be `altered' if there is a patch, but since this is a Linux program, I assume it's a binary port, right? And about being `part of another system' ... I don't think having distfiles/packages on the CD qualifies for that, unless it's included in a linuxdist or something intermixed with other ports. Besides, I think it only helps him to have it more widely available via a FreeBSD CD-ROM. However, to honor his interest, I would do the following: (1) Create a pkg/INSTALL to print out the license file (2) Call it from post-install: so it will also be read by non-package users Satoshi From owner-freebsd-ports Wed Nov 27 15:21:57 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id PAA21923 for ports-outgoing; Wed, 27 Nov 1996 15:21:57 -0800 (PST) Received: from vader.cs.berkeley.edu (vader.CS.Berkeley.EDU [128.32.38.234]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id PAA21915 for ; Wed, 27 Nov 1996 15:21:54 -0800 (PST) Received: (from asami@localhost) by vader.cs.berkeley.edu (8.8.3/8.7.3) id PAA15809; Wed, 27 Nov 1996 15:20:28 -0800 (PST) Date: Wed, 27 Nov 1996 15:20:28 -0800 (PST) Message-Id: <199611272320.PAA15809@vader.cs.berkeley.edu> To: cracauer@cons.org CC: freebsd-ports@FreeBSD.org In-reply-to: <199611261520.QAA11574@knight.cons.org> (message from Martin Cracauer on Tue, 26 Nov 1996 16:20:49 +0100 (MET)) Subject: catpages From: asami@FreeBSD.org (Satoshi Asami) Sender: owner-ports@FreeBSD.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk * What are port maintainers supposed to do about the manpages in * ${PREFIX}/man/cat when the package is about to be removed? * * Two problems: * 1) I can't add it to PLIST, because it may not exist when the package * is being deleted. * 2) Rather a man(1) problem, when my port installs a compressed manpage * (MAN1 port Makefile variable) the file that ends up in cat/ is * still foo.1.gz. * * What to do? Don't worry about that. It's not your fault that man creates a second copy of the page. We now have MAN[1-9LN] variables, so maybe we can start start doing some intelligent handling of manpages (like, modifying the PLIST accordingly, adding hooks to remove catpages). By the way, what ports shouldn't do is to install a cat page only. That makes it impossible to do a "find | rm" of old catpages.... You have three choices. 1) install the beta. 2) patch the non-beta with the file multi-wu-ftpd.txt, and do a very little tweaking by hand, or 3) visit http://cybernut.com/guides/virtual.html, where you'll find a description of how do do step 2, complete with a version of multi-wu-ftpd.txt designed to work directly with the FreeBSD wu-ftpd port. Eventually, I hope to have a port of 2.4.2-beta-11 there as well, and more info on how to use it, as the configurations aren't quite the same. Why do you claim netBSD rewrote its VM for each architecture. At least the parts affecting my bechmarks are quite similar in each :-) John Dyson will hopefully speak for himself, but he stated several times that most his VM work is not x86 specific. It is *FreeBSD*-specific and interfaced to several non-elegant FreeBSD constructs, that's what makes a port to FreeBSD and OpenBSD difficult. NetBSD reorganised major kernel parts several times, causing driver developers to cry. They claim it is needed to make live for other platforms easier respectivly port maintainers would start to maintain their own slightly modified versions of kernel parts, thus leading to maintainance nightmares. If FreeBSD is going to be ported to other architectures, I expect the need for a lot of reorganization/generalization in the FreeBSD kernel to arise. Otherwise, other ports than the main (x86) will have a code base with a full kernel source of their own (as does the SMP kernel for now). While Netcrap can easily cope with this, and displays the file, lynx cannot do it by default. However, lynx provides for a good control about which `downloaders' are availabe, and FreeBSD ships with zmore(1) by default. zmore can display either compressed, gzipped, or plain text files using ${PAGER:-more}. Hence, adding the following rule to our default lynx.cfg would IMHO be a big win for our users: DOWNLOADER:Display using zmore(1) (plaintext, .Z or .gz files are allowed):zmore %s:TRUE What do you think about this? (Note that lynx is also offered by sysinstall to browse through the documentation, that's why in noticed it.) -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-ports Sat Nov 30 16:30:27 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id QAA20814 for ports-outgoing; Sat, 30 Nov 1996 16:30:27 -0800 (PST) Received: (from fenner@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id QAA20797; Sat, 30 Nov 1996 16:30:23 -0800 (PST) Date: Sat, 30 Nov 1996 16:30:23 -0800 (PST) From: Bill Fenner Message-Id: <199612010030.QAA20797@freefall.freebsd.org> To: fenner, gnats-admin, freebsd-ports Subject: Re: pending/1732 Sender: owner-ports@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Synopsis: bzip port won't install Responsible-Changed-From-To: gnats-admin->freebsd-ports Responsible-Changed-By: fenner Responsible-Changed-When: Sat Nov 30 16:29:46 PST 1996 Responsible-Changed-Why: Submitter did not intend it to be confidential From owner-freebsd-ports Sat Nov 30 18:44:54 1996 Return-Path: owner-ports Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id SAA26995 for ports-outgoing; Sat, 30 Nov 1996 18:44:54 -0800 (PST) Received: from emout05.mail.aol.com (emout05.mx.aol.com [198.81.11.96]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id SAA26990 for ; Sat, 30 Nov 1996 18:44:50 -0800 (PST) From: StevenR362@aol.com Received: by emout05.mail.aol.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id VAA26737 for ports@freebsd.org; Sat, 30 Nov 1996 21:44:18 -0500 Date: Sat, 30 Nov 1996 21:44:18 -0500 Message-ID: <961130214418_2015949170@emout05.mail.aol.com> To: ports@freebsd.org Subject: expect and ghostscript4 do not build. He is worried about the U.S. munitions law. I am wondering if we can collectively twist his arm a little to release the patches on a restricted basis. Otherwise, xpdf is pretty much useless for my own personal use. Steve cc me in any replies as I am not subscribed to ports
