One of my reasons for doing so was to obtain support for the MBR-7 CD-ROM changer. I noticed that it was mounting all seven logical units during some of the intermediate states of my upgrades; but don't seem to be recognized now. I have rebuilt my kernel with 'options "MAX_LUN=8"'; and I have the appropriate /dev entries. But the boot probe doesn't find the extra logical units and mount attempts claim that the units aren't configured (which is expected, given that the probe didn't find them...) I've included the first part of the boot log below, with the timestamp and kernel ids trimmed off for readability. Is there anything else that I need to do to get this to work? (Yes, I did try searching the mailing list archives; but didn't find anything appropriate.) It looks like he's only calculated for one head. I also seem to remember reading somewhere that the _internal_ data transfer rate was about 47 to 70Mb/sec., at least for a barracuda. > > Reality shows us that the more agressive drives will happily outrun the > sustained rate your envelope calculation suggests, so I guess reality is > more complicated that you're allowing for 8) > > > Tom > > -- > ]] Mike Smith, Software Engineer msmith@atrad.adelaide.edu.au [[ > ]] Genesis Software genesis@atrad.adelaide.edu.au [[ > ]] High-speed data acquisition and (GSM mobile) 0411-222-496 [[ > ]] realtime instrument control (ph/fax) +61-8-267-3039 [[ > ]] Collector of old Unix hardware. The flaw in the above is: [From www.quantum.com Fireball 640/1280 pages] Sectors per Track 95 to 177 Rotational Speed (RPM) 5,400 90 * 177 * 512 == 8.156MB/s, 90 * 95 * 512 == 4.377MB/s, your 40 spt is 5 year old technology, current technology is pushing this way up, the next generation drives are going to be on the order of 200+ spt. > > One should always temper theory with reality. Though the theory of all this sounds great, I do not know of a disk manufacturer doing this in thier standard drive line. (Yes, there are very special and very expensive drives that have this feature, but again, very very very rare.) The cost of doing this is non-trivial, and I don't care to get into the gory details of it all, just take it at my word, this is something that is not very common. -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Reliable computers for FreeBSD From owner-freebsd-stable Wed Apr 3 02:24:19 1996 Return-Path: owner-stable Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) id CAA00378 for stable-outgoing; Wed, 3 Apr 1996 02:24:19 -0800 (PST) Received: from who.cdrom.com (who.cdrom.com [204.216.27.3]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id CAA00357 for ; Wed, 3 Apr 1996 02:24:16 -0800 (PST) Received: from fire.dkrz.de (fire.dkrz.de [136.172.110.250]) by who.cdrom.com (8.6.12/8.6.11) with ESMTP id CAA25746 for ; Wed, 3 Apr 1996 02:15:09 -0800 Received: from racer.dkrz.de (racer.dkrz.de [136.172.110.55]) by fire.dkrz.de (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id MAA23223; Wed, 3 Apr 1996 12:11:43 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from gwk@localhost) by racer.dkrz.de (8.7.4/8.7.3) id MAA17473; Wed, 3 Apr 1996 12:09:16 +0200 (MET DST) Date: Wed, 3 Apr 1996 12:09:16 +0200 (MET DST) Message-Id: <199604031009.MAA17473@racer.dkrz.de> From: "Georg-W. The LKMs are no longer compatible and must be rebuilt. There was a change to the vnode structure that was required to fix a critical bug and this now requires that either build support for all your filesystems "static" or you rebuild your LKMs before mounting the filesystems that they are for. I also had trouble (now resolved) bootstrapping -stable, but I fell in the trap the other way round: I did the make world first. I started from a 2.1R installation, applied the ctm patches for -stable up to date (this was last saturday), and left a make world running overnight. This worked OK, but unfortunately before I got to it the next day to build a matching kernel, someone else had booted into DOS. Upon rebooting with the 2.1R kernel, it would come up and allow logins if you got in quickly, but about 60 seconds after booting it would latch up, such that keys were still echoed, vtys coulds be switched etc. but no input was processed. Attempts to telnet over Ethernet would connect but similarly would not give a login prompt. So far as I know, I wasn't using any LKMs (I didn't have MSDOS filesystems mounted, and while the fstab did contain a couple of NFS mounts, the 2.1 kernel should have had static NFS in it. Fortunately, if I booted single user it would run (aparrently) without limit, so I was able to build a kernel, and once I had matching kernel and binaries all was well. So there seems to be no safe order for bootstrapping into -stable. This isn't a problem, once you work out what to do, but may explain some reports of "stable isn't". Linux 'talk' can not converse with FreeBSD talk, SunOS talk, Solaris talk, and (according to you) ULTRIX talk. I haven't tried it on other systems. I believe it to be a Linux problem, though I could be mistaken. -Dave Andersen -- angio@aros.net Complete virtual hosting and business-oriented system administration Internet services.
