Because I was in a hurry and didn't have time for finesse' with /usr/share/doc; I just needed to make sure everything was merged and it was safer to do it in a batch. The following seems to be necessary to stop it merging null Id differences for module `papers': cvs -q co -kk -r RELENG_2_2 papers cvs -q update -j HEAD papers I would have expected: cvs -q update -kk -j RELENG_2_2 -j HEAD papers to not merge the null differences. cvs -q rdiff -kk -r RELENG_2_2 -r HEAD papers | patch -p3 works right. Actually, FreeBSD uses the HLT instruction. There is no HALT instruction on i386's. Currently actually, FreeBSD usually does about 1800 instructions of vm book keeping at the beginning of the idle loop. This is too many, and the cpu doesn't stay halted for as long as it should. I was trying to figure out the best way to do this, and I'm leaning towards removing this type of thing from the SYNOPSIS section. I think they are better placed in the main manual page text, and defined within literal text blocks. Someone who is just checking the top of the man page to see what arguments the function takes really doesn't need to know how the fd_rnd typedef is defined (for example). If they need more information, then the are probably going to read the entire man page anyways. I know that ther are a few other man pages that abuse the SYNOPSIS section and put a page or two of #defines and what not in there before there is even any discussion of the function. -- Mike Pritchard mpp@FreeBSD.org "Go that way. Someone who is just checking the If this changes a large number of man pages, they should be left alone IMHO. If it is just a few of them that abuse the SYNOPSIS section, then cool. If it is a lot of man pages that do this, then that implies this usage was the intention of the CSRG. I was drawn to *BSD vs. Linux for folklore and history reason. It was only after trying FreeBSD that I found all the other reasons to use it over Linux. There are about half a dozen or so man pages that fall into this category, and a couple of those are FreeBSD specific. So I think they are fair game, but I'm not sure exactly what to do about a couple of them just yet. And if I see something I don't like, I usually go and check to see if it is done that way a lot, and if it is I usually leave it alone. I've always hated the "we do it this way for historical reasons" argument, because it usually wastes more time doing it the "historical" way all the time, rather than spending the time to convert it to the correct way once and making everyones life easier in the long run. With that said, I try and change the orignal man page text as little as possible. Once in a while someone sends in a PR saying some man page is confusing on some issue and they re-write an entire paragraph or two. I try and just add another sentence or two if that is all it takes to make it clearer. -- Mike Pritchard mpp@FreeBSD.org "Go that way. Really fast. 'cvs update -jHEAD' is basically the equivalent of: 'cvs rdiff -rRELENG_2_2_BP -rHEAD | patch'. Each time you run it, it gets progressively worse since it has no memory of you doing the merge last time, or the time before that, or before that, and so on. Here is what the > the commit message for mdoc.7 should read: > > Document the .Rv (return values) macro. Peter's handy hint #117: 'cvs commit -f mdoc.7' can be your friend. This forces a 'zero changes' commit.. You can put the "oops, previous commit should be: ...." on the actual file so that 'cvs log' contains more meaningful info. Replying to a commit message pretty much ensures the comments are lost after a while.
