I think we should include it for SNAPs, but exclude for releases. Releases have a release tag in the repository anyway, and the CVS subdirs might confuse innocent non-developers. Well, it was actually requested for 2.2.1, not a SNAP. :-) Let's leave it this way for awhile since it _may_ confuse people but I can still see a lot of instances where it would be useful. It is extremely convenient, even if it is a little 'unclean'. With this in place, I can use the following shell-script #!/bin/sh # Usage: changerep REPOSITORY=$1; shift; for repository in $(find $* -path \*/CVS/Repository) do echo $REPOSITORY > $repository done and be ready to do a 'cvs update' to get up to date. This is especially convenient for sources where changes has been made without checking out from the repository in the first place. Changing repositories is something that is necessary fairly often if you have mirrored repositories, so I would guess many people have a similar script (or know how to write the appropriate command-line.) Changing the Repository values is, indeed, trivial and far easier than adding back the CVS/ infrastructure to a src tree which has had it totally eliminated. This requires write permissions to /home of course. This don't solve the problem of reconstructing the CVS information to be able to update from the CVS repository and keep local changes. Changing the repository information is also convenient to be able to work from one repository, and update in another. This is not possible by symlinking /home/ncvs unless you can NFS mount all the hosts together; I've used this (together with ssh) to work locally and commit at freefall. For any listeners that's interested and haven't figured it out yet: Just work from your local CVS tree, and when you want to commit, use the previous shell-script to set the repository to "username@freefall.freebsd.org:/home/ncvs", set CVS_RSH to ssh, and commit. Goes to freefall, just as if you'd logged in there and committed. Eivind. Sorry, I just can't get too worked up over that. Look, this is something which has been frequently requested and I didn't just get bored yesterday and decide to make that change. People really _want_ to be able to load the src or ports distributions and then, at some later date, point at a CVS tree (and if they follow the "freefall tradition" of using /home/ncvs as a pointer, which many developers do, they won't even have to change the repository files) and update just those parts which have changed, preserving also any local changes they may have made. Nothing short of preserving the CVS files can give them this, and it's certainly a very powerful ability (which I've used *myself* quite a few times, especially with the ports collection).
