Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk I'm hunting for a cheap way to be able to start hacking on an alpha, but I don't know enough yet about the hardware to tell if a particular motherboard will work or not. I think I mean details like the bios. I have gotten a note passed from a friend which describes a system that might possibly be a start, so I'm going to include a little bit of the description here. Could I get some comments on whether or not it might work? Here begins the included description: ========================================================================== DEC Multia model with a 166mhz processor, 24mb RAM 340mb HD. I have a Gateway 2000 VGA monitor and a keyboard and mouse to go with it. It's got no OS on it(other than the bootstrap ROM). I had Windows NT running on it. The only way to get an OS on the box is to connect the computer up to CD-ROM drive via the SCSI port, and then boot and install NT or Linux, etc. It's a pizza box design with a bracket that'll mount it vertically. It's got the 2.88mb floopy, every conceivable ethernet port, printer, modem, scsi and an internal PCI slot. The on board video is decent. It also has sound (I don't know the specs) the front has four ports for sound (line in, line out, mic, and speaker/headphone) It's a great machine, I'm just sorry I don't use it. I'd like $500 for the Alpha, I paid more (over a $1000), it's just not being used anymore. ======================================================================== That's it. Anything I get might help me look at it a little closer, and maybe avoid buying something that might be unsuitable.
