I don't much care for how it is currently done with the handbook--too many nodes that are too small. As a test, I've broken things up just at the chapter level which makes for a lot fewer but larger nodes. I sort of like it better but I want some other opinions. So, point your browser at: http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber/hb1/BOOK-0001.html and tell me what you think. Also, if you can point to examples I tend to prefer the current dividing scheme. I find (always) that html divided up as the test handbook cited above is more confusing to read. I don't like having a TOC point me into the middle of another html-chunk, with text above me and text below me. It's confusing, distracting, and seems just plain sloppy. However, from a more practical perspective, slicing the handbook along chapters could be nicer since it allows one to easily download a single chaper, which I think is useful to do given that the expanded html version of the full handbook is 1509898 bytes (ie. more than can fit on a 1.44 floppy). -- tIM...HOEk Whoever told you I had a .signature was lying. It is too bad it doesn't tell which is to be used for getting updated to 2.2-stable. Looking at the documents for CTM and CVSup I find no mention of 2.2-stable! I don't much care for how I think it's a wonderful idea. I'd like even fewer chunks, say eight to ten (maximum) that can be printed separately, e.g., Chapter 1; Chapters 2-4; Chapter 5 (maybe also 6); Chapter 7; Chapters 8-11; Chapters 12-15; Chapters 16-22; and all Appendices. About the maximum length of any of these (I don't know the length of most of them) should be that of Chapter 7, which was 58 pages when I printed it. If downloaded as html source, the handbook looks great printed from Netscape, and the formatting is retained. If downloaded as text it's printable from dos without further processing, which is one solution to the need for a plain text copy of the handbook. There's a tutorial for users new to both FreeBSD and unix at http://www.freebsd.org/tutorials/newuser/newuser.html also available (as a single document instead of html pieces) at http://andrsn.stanford.edu/FreeBSD/newuser.html This document and the documentation that comes with FreeBSD mentions various books--once you get a few titles in mind, you might want to browse a good bookstore to find out what suits you.
