I had a 2.2 "staging area" for this purpose set up which allowed the 2.2 releases to happen anyway, but over time it aged and eventually became unsuitable for hosting releases. I need to rebuild it and was sort of hoping that, instead, Satoshi's unified make world fixes would make it into -current and allow me to simply build 2.2 releases on a 3.0 box. That would save a lot of hassle. However, Satoshi's patches would appear to be embroiled in contraversy or something since I haven't seen any signs that he's going to commit them. :-( Jordan From owner-freebsd-hubs Thu Jul 31 00:50:55 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id AAA14011 for hubs-outgoing; Thu, 31 Jul 1997 00:50:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: from silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU [136.152.64.181]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id AAA14006 for ; Thu, 31 Jul 1997 00:50:52 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from asami@localhost) by silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU (8.8.6/8.6.9) id AAA14957; Thu, 31 Jul 1997 00:45:24 -0700 (PDT) Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 00:45:24 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199707310745.AAA14957@silvia.HIP.Berkeley.EDU> To: freebsd-mirror@sol.cs.ritsumei.ac.jp CC: petzi@apfel.de, hubs@freebsd.org In-reply-to: <19922.870331233@time.cdrom.com> (jkh@time.cdrom.com) Subject: Re: releng22.freebsd.org From: asami@cs.berkeley.edu (Satoshi Asami) Sender: owner-freebsd-hubs@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk * However, Satoshi's patches would appear to be embroiled in contraversy * or something since I haven't seen any signs that he's going to commit * them. :-( Um, I'm surprised that you think that way. It's auses trouble with older 2.8.x servers etc. Well, then there will never be an official irc.freebsd.org site. No big loss. I just can't deal with the kind of "here man, take this binary, it's cool!" mentality I've seen so far in IRC server hackers, and if it didn't come from ports then I'm not even interested in looking at it. :) I'm sorry if this sounds unforgivably elitist, but ad-hoc binary trading and dozens of dubiously hacked versions of some utility is something I'd run Linux for if that were my goal in life. We aspire to higher standards in FreeBSD, and if the various ircd authors can't meet that standard then I guess we don't need to run an irc.freebsd.org yet. Maybe after they grow up and learn how to write software properly*. :-) Jordan * Not that I expect this to happen.
