We are a local provider and we have run into some troubles (not the first time) with FreeBSD, which we could not resolve ourselves. We hope that someone will help us. 1) How can one connect FreeBSD system with Win95 system via Ethernet. The connection must allow Win95 user to do telnet, ftp, http and all other things to the FreeBSD machine. Of course, it would be nice to have some file shares on the FreeBSD machine which could be accessed from Win95 machine. But it is more of a NFS question. 2) How can we split trafic and send different portions of it into different interfaces? I will explain now. For example, we have a DIal-up machine. The users on that machine can work on line with the whole internet and also send e-mail. And we have to physical communication channel connected to the machine: 1) one 28800 2) and one 9600 We want all on-line/other work go through the 28800 channel and all smtp mail go through 9600 interface. At the moment we have no idea how to do it. Of course, there is a way with tweeking MX records, which will reqire installing one more machine. But that is not what we REALLY want. We want something more flexible) 3) This is one could seem a bit weird. In /var/log there is a file "mailstat" It has write permission set for the whole world. The same story with files in archived mailstat dir. We base out mail accounting system on those files and we do not want other people to change them. We need to know for sure that if we clear write permission for the whole world for those file nothing bad will happen. What daemon writes to those files ? And if it is impossible to change the attribute without something bad happen, what can we do to account for mail safely and reliably ? Thank you. Any comments would be appriciated. Give the Win95 computers IP numbers. Use your FreeBSD PC as name server. > Of course, it would be nice to have some file shares on > the FreeBSD machine which could be accessed from Win95 machine. Install Samba. The original FreeBSD installation asks if you want it. You can install it later as a "package". It works. Your Win95 computers can access files on FreeBSD. Use the "Client for Microsoft Networks". Set the WINS server manually. I use this quit a bit. Let me know if you have trouble. > But it is more of a NFS question. For Win95? I think you need to buy a book on basic Windows networking - you are rapidly dropping below the level of questions we generally have the time to answer here, and if you've never hooked a Windows box to any sort of network, as definitely appears to be the case here, then you have a lot of learning to do before you should even attempt to provide ISP services or send questions to this list. This is something for questions@freebsd.org, not isp@freebsd.org. Thanks. And the reason is because you don't have . in your PATH. This is a common newbie problem and discussed in any number of UNIX guides, a number of which are listed in the appendix of http://www.freebsd.org/handbook - I suggest you visit this page and many an appropriate purchase. > One more question....I would like to run a specific program every 30 > minutes is there a easy way to do this in FreeBsd OS? See the man pages for at and cron. And again, these are both basic UNIX questions which would be better answered by a suitable book. Most xDSL products that I've seen have an ethernet interface to the host. I really like wget, which you can get from ftp.hilink.com.au:/pub/FreeBSD/ You just say wget -m -nH -r ftp://releng22.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.2-970629-RELENG and it fetches the entire tree. One downside is that it creates the pub/FreeBSD under the current directory, as well as the 2.2-970629-RELENG/. This string is indeed part of the Merit AAA Server which someone (I'm sorry, but his name escapes me) put into the ports collection. This string represents a parsing error in the "users" file used to configure user profiles for the Merit AAA Server. Robert may have made a typo or some other syntactical error -- I would need to see his users file. The logging of this message is accompanied by a line number of the problem line in the users file. We maintain a support mailing list (which is one-way, i.e., not join-able) for both our licensed AAA customers and others who have questions about the Merit AAA Server at: aaa-support@merit.edu However, we cannot afford to give the same time and effort supporting non-licensed customers as we do to our paying customers, sorry... :-( Regards, web... -- William Bulley Email: web@merit.edu Merit Network Inc. We are going to get the Cisco AS5200 dialin server tho. We currently have 2 Cisco 2501's and they are amazing little boxes. They run extremely well, and the AS5200 is built around them as their routing engine. I don't like Ascend too much (please don't flame back) and if you are already familiar with Cisco's IOS, you will have no problems configuring the new server. > 2) Has anyione actually got either Ascend's or Ciscos software for the > user manager working with FreeBSD? Will know in about 2 weeks on that one...we are planning on using the Cisco TACACS+ accounting which comes standard with the Cisco's...The documentation I have on it makes it sound extremely superior to RADIUS, but I have no experience with RADIUS as of yet, so I can make no fair comparison. > 3) And can anyone recomend a book that would give me a good > understanding of TCP/IP & Routing? Go with O'Reilly and Associates when looking for good UN*X books (http://www.ora.com). They have some of the best in-depth but easy to understand books around. They have at least one on TCP/IP. Well, IMHO, the Cisco is far superior to the PM3 from what I've seen and read. The 2501 engine it is built around is built to work. The PM3's are still quite buggy and people are having trouble getting or staying connected in a lot of cases. You get what you pay for (in the hardware market at least), and it is kinda unfortunate, but the amount of R&D that has gone into the Cisco as compared to the PM3's lends the Cisco to be much better developed. I was going to get a PM3, but after being on their mailing lists, and after meeting with a Cisco rep and seeing the comparisons and reading the specs, there was no need to think before making that decision. -Gary Margiotta TBE Internet Services http://www.tbe.net From owner-freebsd-isp Sat Jul 5 10:18:57 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id KAA11546 for isp-outgoing; Sat, 5 Jul 1997 10:18:57 -0700 (PDT) Received: from chain-gateway.iafrica.com (9rbM7vo0FYX92iwgOeiW5R1GbA/FPzz9@chain-gateway.iafrica.com [196.31.1.126]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id KAA11541 for ; Sat, 5 Jul 1997 10:18:52 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (khetan@localhost) by chain-gateway.iafrica.com (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id TAA17510; Sat, 5 Jul 1997 19:18:39 +0200 (SAT) Date: Sat, 5 Jul 1997 19:18:39 +0200 (SAT) From: Khetan Gajjar Reply-To: Khetan Gajjar To: Adam David cc: freebsd-isp@freebsd.org Subject: Re: SSLeay and Apache 1.2.0 In-Reply-To: <199707050230.CAA02055@ubiq.veda.is> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-isp@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk On Sat, 5 Jul 1997, Adam David wrote: >Any chance of making it available as a set of patchfiles, or to plug into the >existing port?
