Tweten" Sender: owner-mobile@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk For the most part, putting XFree86 3.3 on my NEC 6030X, running FreeBSD RELENG_2_2 from a week ago, was a smooth process. Some fiddling was required to get the right mix of XF86Config ingredients from the XF86Setup program, from a friend's Linux XF86Config, and from the XF86Config from my tower machine, but things look pretty good now. There are two lingering problems: 1) When I log out, and until xdm displays the login widget, a 1/2 inch strip of colorful garbage replaces the hounds tooth pattern at the top of the display. When the login widget appears, the garbage goes away. 2) The "Suspend Button" no longer puts it to sleep. Other parts of the power management package still work. The screen blanks after a period of no use. The hard disk spins up and down as appropriate. Before I installed XFree86 suspend worked, but no more. Oh. I should point out that I haven't installed any of the PAO stuff. Since the standard release contains some power control and PCMCIA stuff, I figured to hold off on PAO until I found something the vanilla release couldn't do. It's also possible that the XFree86 server somehow 'walks' onto the BIOS area, or the computer refuses to goto sleep if the display doesn't react properly. The BIOS almost certainly takes one look at the video controller and swears off being able to restore it, and thus gives up on suspending. If you switch back to the text console (alt-ctrl-F1), you should be able to suspend OK. Will have to investigate all the things I built out of the ports collection from the time X was done until I noticed the suspend problem. Unfortunately, there were several things. Since I haven't done a /usr/ports make clean yet, the following find list of directories under /usr/ports that themselves contain "work" directories should be the accurate list of ports built: archivers/unzip editors/emacs emulators/mtools graphics/jpeg graphics/xfig graphics/xpm mail/exmh2 mail/metamail mail/mh net/xarchie news/knews print/transfig security/pidentd security/rsaref textproc/ispell www/netscape3 x11/XFree86-contrib There was also PGP, until it refused to check a signature by someone with a key longer than 1024 bits. I removed it, to be replaced later by MIT PGP 2.6.2, which handles keys up to 2048 bits. I should also remove rsaref for the same reason. Is there something similar for NE2000s (which also use the 'ed' driver)? I have a laptop that is sometimes on a thin-net network, sometimes on twisted pair.
