I'm using an Aztech SoundBlaster Pro clone card, with claimed support for Adlib/SB-Pro/MPU401 emulation. FreeBSD 2.2-RELENG, somewhere around the time 3.0/2.2 split was done (yes I know I should upgrade ...) (a) Unless I boot into Windoze first (erk) the sound driver doesn't recognize the card. Looks like some intialization is missing somewhere :(. Is there any information on getting Aztech clones to work properly? (b) When connecting a synth to the external MIDI port I've seen lossage of notes and small timing problems esp. when there are lot of MIDI events flowing down the wire. I'm using the MPU401 driver to drive the external MIDI. Anyone seen this kind of problem before? The external device is a Yamaha PSR400. (c) I tried playing my keyboard and the sound card's audio output simultaneously, and found to my surprise that the two were out of tune (using playmidi 2.3). The resultant cacophony rivalled the bands you hear in B-grade Delhi restaurants. Has anyone seen this problem before? Getting the synth manually in tune is a pain; any workarounds from FreeBSD? Jack, you can get the same functionality, maybe even better, by leaving the idea of a postscript printer behind. Let me explain that. I used to have an HP Laserjet printer, which had a postscript plug-in module, so I could print postscript. I wanted to be able to directly print postscript. OK, it took about 45-60 seconds for most pages to print, and many things wouldn't print at all, because of shortcomings in the module being able to accept anything outside of it's idea of what postscript ought to be. Many things I could read fine via ghostview, but I couldn't print them. I had a document from school come up, and I _had_ to get it printed, no way to avoid it. My HP with it's module choked on it, and wouldn't print. Before being forced to go to a local printer (and have some great sum surgically removed from my wallet for that) I decided to remove the module from the HP laserjet, and use ghostscript directly to generate the HP PCL5 code to drive the printer in a native mode. To my astonishment, the document printed about 5 times faster, and without any problems. Since then, my original HP Laserjet died, and I bought a HP Deskjet 693, I forget, maybe for 350 bucks. I now use apsfilter to print with. I send anything I want to lpr, and it just prints great. Ascii, postscript, gifs, anything at all, apsfilter figures out what the file is, and does the modification or transformation needed to get it to print. I set up two drivers via apsfilter, because printing in color is kinda expensive unless you need it. It's not everyday you can save a bunch of money and improve the quality in one step. Postscript printers cost an arm and a leg; go price them. > > Jack > > The faster your computer is, the slower your life becomes. > > ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- Chuck Robey | Interests include any kind of voice or data chuckr@eng.umd.edu | communications topic, C programming, and Unix. 213 Lakeside Drive Apt T-1 | Greenbelt, MD 20770 | I run Journey2 and picnic, both FreeBSD (301) 220-2114 | version 3.0 current -- and great FUN! ----------------------------+----------------------------------------------- From owner-freebsd-multimedia Wed Jun 25 23:11:18 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id XAA05836 for multimedia-outgoing; Wed, 25 Jun 1997 23:11:18 -0700 (PDT) Received: from grunt.grondar.za (O1Lnqf+rB3ydgc3YHrANTqI6Bc00GiZ1@grunt.grondar.za [196.7.18.129]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id XAA05830 for ; Wed, 25 Jun 1997 23:11:14 -0700 (PDT) Received: from greenpeace.grondar.za (greenpeace.grondar.za [196.7.18.132]) by grunt.grondar.za (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id IAA28554; Thu, 26 Jun 1997 08:11:03 +0200 (SAT) Received: from greenpeace.grondar.za (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by greenpeace.grondar.za (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id IAA08312; Thu, 26 Jun 1997 08:10:57 +0200 (SAT) Message-Id: <199706260610.IAA08312@greenpeace.grondar.za> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0gamma 1/27/96 To: Chuck Robey cc: multimedia@freebsd.org Subject: Re: PS printer Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Thu, 26 Jun 1997 08:10:56 +0200 From: Mark Murray Sender: owner-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Chuck Robey wrote: > Since then, my original HP Laserjet died, and I bought a HP Deskjet 693, I > forget, maybe for 350 bucks. I have an HP 694C, and I have not taken it out of the box yet (in case I have to give it back), because I don't know if it will work, and I can find no mention of its compatibility modes. This printer has (it claims) a "photo-real" mode. Can you access this through something in UNIX/Ghostscript/PS? Are there any tricks to aligning the heads colour/black like for the other HP colour DJ's? > It's not everyday you can save a bunch of money and improve the quality in > one step. I've just recently purchased the second color ink cartridge for the "photo-realistic" stuff, but in the one time that I tried it, I couldn't see a difference. Course, the original one came out amazingly well to begin with. Do you have a picture source that I could use to check this with, one that would print differently with the two? BTW, it came with Windows software, but I haven't taken the shrink-wrap off that. Might have been a picture in there to serve as a test case. Sounds like he has the Intel Atlantis (Advanced/AS), which has the CS4232C soundcard-on-a-chip, and an ATI mach64 video card (video card is optional) built into the motherboard. From Intel's Atlantis FAQ (http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/as/as_inst.HTM): ----- How can I disable the Crystal audio component on the Advanced/AS? For non-Plug and Play operating systems (DOS, Windows, WFW, etc.) you need to use the ISA Configuration Utility (ICU) to disable the Advanced/AS on-board Crystal Audio subsystem. Important note: The DOS/Windows ICU should not be used with Windows 95. Follow these steps with non-Plug and Play operating systems: To disable the on-board sound using the Windows 95 device manager: It basically says to uncheck the box marked "Original Configuration". Finally, using a text editor, add REM in front of C:\win95\cs4232c.exe /w /x in the CONFIG.SYS file. The above procedure can be used for disabling the Crystal Audio component using version 1.24 of the Windows 95 Crystal audio drivers. The above procedure also can be used to disable the Crystal Audio component for drivers previous to version 1.24. The driver names in the Device Manager for previous versions are: •Crystal CS4232PNP Audio Hardware •Gameport Joystick •MPU-401 Compatible ----- Obviously, not very friendly to non-Micro$oft systems. --Ludwig Pummer ------------------------------------------------------------------ ludwigp@bigfoot.com ICQ UIN: 692441 http://chipweb.home.ml.org PGP Key & Geek Code available on web page ^-- Updated 04/18/97 "If God had intended Man to Smoke, He would have set him on Fire." HP sells a Pentium computer that does not have jumpers or a BIOS option to disable the onboard Crystal soundcard. The machine was here so quickly that I did not see the manufacturer of the motherboard. According to the owner, he could not get the OSS driver to work with the card. People that buy these crap machines cannot afford to lose a IRQ. They already max-ed out the IRQs because of IDE drive, APATI drive, PS/2 mouse and (usually internal) modem. --mark. Yep, that's what I got -- an HP Pavilion 7160. I've already called HP about this, which was where I got the shocking news that the onboard audio could not be disabled. I wanted to reach through the phone and strangle someone. I never could get OSS to work either, by the way. Thinking seriously of just replacing the motherboard completely. I'm *really* tired of grappling with this problem. Besides the above, the BIOS setup utility really stinks, too. Obviously a machine for clueless Windoze users. At the time, it was one of the earliest 166 MHz machines out, and seemed like a good buy. >People that buy these crap machines cannot afford to lose a IRQ. They >already max-ed out the IRQs because of IDE drive, APATI drive, PS/2 >mouse and (usually internal) modem. Yep, you're right on it. I don't use the internal whatever-the-hell-it-is modem, though. Much prefer my external Sportster 33.6. Thanks for all the replies, folks. While not quite what I was hoping for (like, some miraculous solution to this aggravating situation), the feedback was enlightening, and much appreciated. Guess it's time once again to whip out the plastic and dig myself even deeper into debt. I never should have bought the damned AWE 64, really. When I was checking it out in the store, though, I saw nothing on the box that indicated it was PnP. Should have returned it at once. Oh well. The Asus VX97 can be had for $95 (San Francisco Bay Area prices; i don't know about Tennessee). If the VX board isn't good (or fast) enough, the basic TX97 board is $155. There are also models of the TX which have a SoundBlaster 16, more DIMM sockets, ATX form factor, or ATI Rage II video). There's also the classic $135 XP55 T2P4 board (HX chipset) which isn't the latest, but is still a good value. Of the boards we sell (Microstar, SuperMicro, Asus, an Iwill or two, Intel, FIC), Asus boards give us the least trouble. Sadly, the TX97 is so new that you need to install all of the motherboard drivers from the CDROM in order to get Win95's plug-and-pray working properly. --Ludwig Pummer ------------------------------------------------------------------ ludwigp@bigfoot.com ICQ UIN: 692441 http://chipweb.home.ml.org PGP Key & Geek Code available on web page ^-- Updated 04/18/97 "If God had intended Man to Smoke, He would have set him on Fire." By accident I stumble upon "sane" a scsi scanner package: http://www.azstarnet.com/~axplinux/sane/ After a couple of days of hacking I managed to get it going on FreeBSD. If anyone is interested in *helping* out flushing the remaining bugs , please drop me me a note. The most critical problems are proper formatting / handling of scsi commands. I patched up sane so it can run with my UMAX S-12. Overall, is a thumbs up for "sane" specially compared to UMAX's software package. Guido van Rooij: |Ah ok. Btw I have been thinking about solving the `plus channels' |problem, and I think what I want to do is this: |In stead of having a numeric channel field, have a string field. |In you resources you can specify which channels you have and either |their channel no. or their frequency. If you do not set a channel |name you'll just get your old number back. What do you think? | |The reason that I want something like that is that in Europe we |do not have channel numbers as identifiers but channel names. |Hmm..now that I think of it: I would rather see a nnew file, lets say |.fxtv-channels, in stead of resources. Anyway, I'd like to know |what you plan to do with fxtv and if my views fit in there ;-) Well, from what you said, it sure sounds like there's a need for frequency-to-string mappings as opposed to frequency-to-channelnum mappings. Glancing down in brooktree848.c and searching down for "Western European", I assume something like the names on the rightmost column of the commented-out table are what you're talking about. Let me ask a few more questions to get a handle on the specifics so we can determine the best place for this table. If I understood, there are no "channel numbers" in Europe, just channel names. So I assume the channel numbers in the driver are pretty well arbitrary. Also, can we assume that the channel names in a frequency-to-name mapping table are constant for a particular broadcast standard? (e.g. a specific frequency is always identified as "N21" or "E1"). If so, it seems like we should either: 1) keep the arbitrary channel numbers in the driver for the existing interface, and add a new driver interface so it can tell apps what the ad-hoc channel number -to- name mappings are (e.g. #1 == "N21", #2 == "E2"), OR 2) Modify the driver interface to accept a channel string specifier instead of (or in addition to) the existing channel number specification interface (for US, string would just be chan number in string form), OR 3) Instead, have apps manage the name-to-frequency mappings, and have them talk to the driver in frequencies (for all freq stds, or maybe just for channel-numberless standards). Both #1 & #2 hide the app from the mappings from frequencies to channel numbers/names, which is good if its practical. This is a big plus because each new app won't have to know how to convert N21 to a frequency. We may need to resort to #3 if there is enough variability in or space required for the freq-to-name table such that its impractical to encode this knowledge in the driver. If so, we should come up with a common FreeBSD link library so each new bt848 TV app doesn't need to duplicate the name-to-frequency mappings, but rather can just link with the library and talk channel names and channel numbers instead of frequencies, as with options #1 & #2. |ps: so you know what this is: |bktr0: ioctl: tsleep error 35 100001c |I keep getting them everytime when I freeze the window. Yeah, you'll get this when a single-frame capture (aka CAP_SINGLE, or freeze frame) fails. This occurs when the driver timed-out waiting on 1 or 2 fields to complete capture, and so it couldn't assemble the frame. Where I've seen it happen is when the tuner isn't in complete sync with the video (on weak channels the tuner can sometimes drift off frequency a little). Looking in my console window, I see that there's one there from earlier this morning. I have a WinTVpci board by Hauppauge which is targeted at the European PAL B/G market with Teletext. In case you're interested on the parts present on this board, here'a a list: The tuner is labeled "Front end 4002 FH5 Temic 3X7 756". The semis in the tuner are all Philips parts: TDA9800T - PLL detector /demodulator TSA5522T - IIC controlled synthesizer TDA5737M - Hyperband mixer oscillator As an aside, the above tuner compares with a Philips FI1216 in both pinout and part layout though the Philips has slightly different parts (TDA9800, TSA5518, TDA5731). The Temic may well be a FI1236 in disguise though I have no FI1236 to look at... Moving avay from the tuner, we have the Bt848KPF of course with a 35M46895 crystall, the 4052 analog mux, the Philips 8582C2 EEPROM. Also on the board are a SAA5246AGP/E teletext decoder with it's associated Winbond W24257AS-35 SRAM (probably an 8K part judging from the 5246 data sheets) and a 27M crystall. On the PCB there are empty places for other chips which are not fitted, probably for all the other options like stereo, etc. Later, Alex From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sat Jun 28 22:29:48 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id WAA18296 for multimedia-outgoing; Sat, 28 Jun 1997 22:29:48 -0700 (PDT) Received: from bmccane.uit.net (bmccane.uit.net [208.129.189.48]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id WAA18279; Sat, 28 Jun 1997 22:29:41 -0700 (PDT) Received: from bmccane.uit.net (localhost.mccane.com [127.0.0.1]) by bmccane.uit.net (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id AAA16622; Sun, 29 Jun 1997 00:29:32 -0500 (CDT) Message-Id: <199706290529.AAA16622@bmccane.uit.net> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0gamma 1/27/96 To: Amancio Hasty cc: multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG, chat@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Free At Last: A Scanner Storyn In-reply-to: Your message of "Fri, 27 Jun 1997 18:20:38 PDT." <199706280120.SAA01616@rah.star-gate.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Sun, 29 Jun 1997 00:29:31 -0500 From: Wm Brian McCane Sender: owner-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk I would love to look at this. With my umax-s12 I was getting scsi error messages of type "INTERMEDIATE" when the umax was busy and sane was sending scsi messages to it. Hopefully, one of our scsi experts will fix scsi_ioctl to handle properly all scsi error messages. With the ioctl patch you don't need to run the scanner with scsi disconnect disabled as the sane documentation recommends. Haven't check out tagged queuing however I doubt that it will be a problem. ---- mknod /dev/uk0 --- download sane and gimp from my ftp site: ftp://rah.star-gate.com/pub/gimp-0.9.10.tar.gz ftp://rah.star-gate.com/pub/sane-0.6.tar.gz ftp://rah.star-gate.com/pub/out.jpg out.jpg is a sample scan of a picture taken at 100dpi resolution. If you have problems you can trace your scsi transactions: scsi -f /dev/uk0 -d 255 make sure that you compile a kernel with the option "SCSIDEBUG" To talk to the scsi scanner I use the scsi library and the same approach should work with your mustek -- I hope. Anyhow I cant test the software over here because I don't have a mustek scanner. sane uses low level scsi calls to talk to the scsi scanners. Also it will be nice if someone just takes over sane and scsi friends what I have is a good start given that at least it works with my UMAX S12.
