The problem is that every so often one of the Ethernet cards (no, not always the same one) stops transmitting, and the kernel starts complaining about 'nfs send error 55' (no buffer space available). ifconfiging the interface down and back up causes it to start sending again. Any ideas on what might be the problem? As near as I can tell from the CVS logs, the 2.2 and -current Ethernet drivers don't appear to be noticably different from what's in 2.1.7, but at this point I'm certainly willing to try a 2.2.x kernel to try and fix this problem, as it's getting fairly annoying. If anyone has any other suggestions as to how to track down this problem, I'd like to hear them. The FreeBSD drive for the 3C509 isn't the greatest. Apparently 3COM has been less than forthcoming with the hw info. Some hw revs work better than others. The de0 drive is known to be very solid for 10mbs ethernet cards (has problems probling 100mbs cards). I use the SMC Etherpower 10, with NEVER a problem. The Intel PRO100B is supposed to be a very good 100ms card. The driver supports full-duplex operation too. We've had problems with the 3Com cards in Pentium computers. We've seen the kinds of problems you mention under Interactive UNIX, FreeBSD and Win95. I believe there may be a hardware problem in their parallel architecture. Perhaps a race condition in some state machine? Anyway, in all cases we got satisfaction by replacing the 3Com card with one from another manufacturer. The Intel Ether Express seems to work for us. Unfortunate, because we had sorta settled on 3Com as a standard. -crl -- Chad R. I have also installed rpc.pcnfsd. But the problem occures in conjunction with portmap. If I try to run "rpcinfo -b nfs 2" I get a error message like this: portmap["pid"] ... callit(nfs) request not forwarded (Sorry for the unaccurate error message, I don't sit in front of the machine at the moment) I will also get this message, if any of the PC's tries to search for an NFS server. I have no problem with "rpcinfo -b pcnfsd 2"! On my private FreeBSD machine I don't have this problem, I had installed it with "NFS Server" option checked at installation time. I have checked several manpages and configuration files FAQ and FreeBSD Handbook, I have also looked into the mailing list archive, but I didn't found a solution for my problem. It behaves badly in that it uses the proxy code in portmap to do requests. This has been disabled in FreeBSD because it opens up sever security holes. You should get pcnfs or something like that. -Guido From owner-freebsd-stable Fri Apr 11 12:19:55 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id MAA13392 for stable-outgoing; Fri, 11 Apr 1997 12:19:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: from quay.pipex.net (quay.mail.pipex.net [158.43.128.34]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id MAA13380 for ; Fri, 11 Apr 1997 12:19:50 -0700 (PDT) Received: (qmail 7388 invoked from network); 11 Apr 1997 19:19:11 -0000 Received: from imdb.demon.co.uk (HELO localhost.imdb.com) (194.222.68.23) by quay.mail.pipex.net with SMTP; 11 Apr 1997 19:19:07 -0000 Date: Fri, 11 Apr 1997 19:33:46 +0100 (BST) From: Rob Hartill To: stable@freebsd.org Subject: 2.2-stable broken ?
