Ordering a Subscription would not make any sense to the publisher when they have long been told that 2.1.5, (and 2.1.6, 2.1.7, etc.) were each the last of the 2.1 series. I do hope that you have a CD of at least one of the 2.1 series. What would you think of the idea of future 2.1 series available on CD only in source form? My only thought would be that, if someone is that concerned with stability, they're not likely to be using or subscribed to the SNAPS. This may be an image situation, but one that can be sold. Probably would require a readme about what has or has not changed in 2.1.x. $40 is generally easy enough to get through corporate bean counters, though a subscription is more difficult because it's open-ended. SNAPS do offer a way to keep up with the latest bug fixes and CERT plugs and it is most certainly less costly than Sun or IBM software support. Also, the only way you're likely to reach the unconnected, is USPS, so the decision window really extends to the next printing of the catalog. However provided, I think it's necessary. Corporate minds and those of us who work for them can be extremely anal about stability. The stable branch has been what I would take to management as a reliable solution and would put my neck on the line for the recommendation. (Which I have done in an AIX shop and have not been disappointed.) I wouldn't consider doing that for Linux or the other *BSDs. Personally, I would rather see the update in the formal release in place of the live file system, but the more I think about it, where it is really needed, the SNAPS would be a better mechanism. However you choose, I think it is in Walnut Creek's and FreeBSD's best interest to keep them available. Does anyone actually use the live file system? -- Jay On Sun, 20 Apr 1997, Jordan K. They're cheaper to Again, let me suggest that a periodic release set which has the archive of all the presently supported versions would be easier to sell to management. It is similar to the monthly developer CD's that I get from some major vendors. However, to help retail sales, they should hype the latest release which is included. I feel that it is important for there to be a structured program which provides on CD a definitive archive of all the source which "belongs" in each active released system. I do not feel that it is appropriate to mix this archive with the extremely transient material which makes up a "SNAP". One problem with this - if I'm genuinely making it a "best of all branches" CD then I get into the issue of supporting the relevant port and package set for each or I've greatly diminished the value of the offering for what people are obviously going to use it for - the most "definitive" release CD they own. By contrast, if I have a semi-stable snapshot which is also going to be rendered obsolete in 3-4 months by the next snapshot then I don't expect the CD to have much of a shelf-life and I don't have to sweat even a full packages collection (though now that I've gone to two CDs, I can). It's just a developer's snapshot with limited utility and nobody's going to expect all the bells and whistles. Now, however, let's say I've done a nifty 2.1.8 / 2.2.5 combo CDROM. Most people know that major point releases only happen once every 6 months or so, and that 2.1.8 release might even be the *last* -stable release for all we know (nobody's going to promise that, obviously, but it's always an increasing possibility for a branch that old), so now we're talking about a CD that's going to sit on a lot of shelves for awhile. It's the installer's definitive 2.1-stable CD and it's probably also the primary 2.2 installation CD for at least 4-5 more months. I'm going to get away with not making a packages collection for each? Not hardly! I would be lynched! :-) So that means a 4 CD set and every time I bring this up with Walnut Creek CDROM they cringe, so I haven't the heart. I still think it's inevitable, however, and when the day comes that I talk them into it then I'llcertainly very seriously consider a mondo CD with last-release bits for all major branches, a CVS tree, packages for each branch and possibly even the last two major XFree86 distributions. I could do a lot with 4 CDs. :-) Jordan From owner-freebsd-stable Sun Apr 20 23:32:27 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id XAA19208 for stable-outgoing; Sun, 20 Apr 1997 23:32:27 -0700 (PDT) Received: from dfw-ix7.ix.netcom.com (dfw-ix7.ix.netcom.com [206.214.98.7]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id XAA19202 for ; Sun, 20 Apr 1997 23:32:24 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from smap@localhost) by dfw-ix7.ix.netcom.com (8.8.4/8.8.4) id BAA21344; Mon, 21 Apr 1997 01:30:45 -0500 (CDT) Received: from sjx-ca83-10.ix.netcom.com(207.94.112.106) by dfw-ix7.ix.netcom.com via smap (V1.3) id sma021313; Mon Apr 21 01:30:14 1997 Received: (from asami@localhost) by blimp.mimi.com (8.8.5/8.6.9) id XAA24540; Sun, 20 Apr 1997 23:30:03 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sun, 20 Apr 1997 23:30:03 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199704210630.XAA24540@blimp.mimi.com> To: jkh@time.cdrom.com CC: rkw@dataplex.net, jdn@qiv.com, mkino@po.iijnet.or.jp, stable@freebsd.org In-reply-to: <18464.861601729@time.cdrom.com> (jkh@time.cdrom.com) Subject: Re: Is there a perceived need for a 2.1.8 release? I've been using my Philips CDD2600 as a regular cd-rom, but today I wanted to try it as a cd-writer. I added the worm device to my kernel, added rworm0 in /dev, and it seems I succeeded in burning a cdrom. (I used the Philips CDD2000 settings for wormcontrol, and that seems to work.) I used to be able to mount a cd using the /dev/cd0a device with something like mount -o ro -t cd9660 /dev/cd0a /cdrom This now no longer works, as the cd has been taken over by the /dev/rworm0 device. People wanting to keep running 2.1.x do so because they want extreme stability, and are already up and running on 2.1.x. This indicate vital machines, probably running in a production environment. Anybody willing to take down such a machine and actually replace the underlying system by doing a re-install should IMHO upgrade to 2.2. (Especially if Justin keep his SCSI-changes away until they have been tested really thouroughly in -current ;) However, for people that want to make an upgrade in place, by recompiling without taking down the server, the SNAP CDs are probably already what they want, without knowing it yet. The SNAPs include a full CVS-tree (or I'm just babbling), so an upgrade of the 2.1.x sources can be done by just typing cd /usr cvs -d /cdrom/cvsroot checkout src cd src make depend make make install cd sys/i386/conf config MYKERNEL cd ../../MYKERNEL make make install reboot If we add a script for doing this to the SNAP CDs, as well as a static version of cvs for those having really old distributions, people can easily use this to upgrade. It will list all tags set on that file, which are not certain to be all tags, but if you pick an old file you'll at least get all the important release-tags. Eivind.
