The guide looks great, and I'll definitely follow the instructions next time. The only thing is, I hadn't seen this before, and now I go back to look at the website, I still can't see a link to the tutorials section. If it's more appropriate somewhere else, please let me know. I'm interested in mbufs with external storage, particularly when that storage is not in the form of mbufs clusters. I've examined the mbuf.h file, and the structure for external storage is: struct m_ext { caddr_t ext_buf; /* start of buffer */ void (*ext_free) /* free routine if not the usual */ __P((caddr_t, u_int)); u_int ext_size; /* size of buffer, for ext_free */ void (*ext_ref) /* add a reference to the ext object */ __P((caddr_t, u_int)); }; I also searched through old mail on this topic, and it seems that this structure used to be a lot richer, with some form of "opaque" argument (ext_arg) that could be used by whatever was allocating/freeing the external memory. Having something like this would be extremely useful in certain scenarios, and I've used it to good effect in Digital Unix. We're examining FreeBSD as a platform for doing some I/O research, and the package we want to port uses this "ext_arg" convention. Does anyone know if there are any plans of (re)including this, or if there's some reason why it was removed? Tell us which version of FreeBSD you are using. Also, plasease boot the machine with the `-v' option at the "Boot:" prompt and send us diagnostic messages shown during boot. You can obtain them by the `dmesg' command or by looking into the file /var/log/messages. You say you cannot login because the keyboard seems to be locked up. I believe the system is still alive and you can login to the system via network. Well, I've done some more investigation. Like I indicated before, this is a single-user machine. However, I do the following from /etc/rc: -- start userland PPP -- start fetchmail-3.9.8 So, on boot-up, fetchmail forces the connection to my ISP (desired action), and transfers mail. I just recently enabled FEATURE(local_procmail) in sendmail (thinking that maybe the problems with 'unable to fork' were because I was calling procmail from my .forward file). When I reconnected (just to get make world done without a hitch, which it did (finally)), I had 145 messages in my queue. Guess what? While sendmail/procmail were digesting the inbound mail, I got Out of processes So now, I'm off to find out what to tweak to increase the number of available processes and see if that takes care of the problem. joe From owner-freebsd-stable Wed Jul 2 17:10:15 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) id RAA02885 for stable-outgoing; Wed, 2 Jul 1997 17:10:15 -0700 (PDT) Received: from laguna.arc.unm.edu (laguna.arc.unm.edu [198.59.173.7]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id RAA02877 for ; Wed, 2 Jul 1997 17:10:12 -0700 (PDT) Received: from pegasus.unm.edu (ppp-060.unm.edu [129.24.14.60]) by laguna.arc.unm.edu (8.7.3/8.7.3) with SMTP id SAA01126 for ; Wed, 2 Jul 1997 18:10:09 -0600 (MDT) Message-Id: <3.0.1.32.19970702180908.00685ad4@arc.unm.edu> X-Sender: shawnhsu@arc.unm.edu X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 3.0.1 (32) Date: Wed, 02 Jul 1997 18:09:08 -0600 To: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG From: "Xu, Xiang" Subject: Packard Bell Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-stable@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi: Anyone has setup ppp on a Packard Bell machine, please give me some clue. The problem is that install(1) is built very early on, before the includes are installed (for obvious reasons). install(1) needs these flags defined, so you have to manually run 'make includes' before building the world. > H -- ]] Mike Smith, Software Engineer msmith@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] Genesis Software genesis@gsoft.com.au [[ ]] High-speed data acquisition and (GSM mobile) 0411-222-496 [[ ]] realtime instrument control.
