It's nothing like that painless if you're using CVSup, FWIW. The entire CVS repo requires something around the 80MB mark, a single checked-out copy substantially less. If you have one of the snapshot CDROMs, that's an even better place to start. mike From owner-freebsd-stable Sun Aug 31 21:06:39 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id VAA04800 for stable-outgoing; Sun, 31 Aug 1997 21:06:39 -0700 (PDT) Received: from fly.HiWAAY.net (root@fly.HiWAAY.net [208.147.154.56]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id VAA04795 for ; Sun, 31 Aug 1997 21:06:34 -0700 (PDT) Received: from nospam.hiwaay.net (max2-152.HiWAAY.net [208.147.145.152]) by fly.HiWAAY.net (8.8.6/8.8.6) with ESMTP id XAA24829; Sun, 31 Aug 1997 23:05:59 -0500 (CDT) Received: from nospam.hiwaay.net (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by nospam.hiwaay.net (8.8.7/8.8.4) with ESMTP id XAA02641; Sun, 31 Aug 1997 23:05:56 -0500 (CDT) Message-Id: <199709010405.XAA02641@nospam.hiwaay.net> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0zeta 7/24/97 To: "Jamil J. I was having a different "make world" problem yesterday. Built a new /usr/src out of CTM's I had laying around then brought that up to date with cvsup. Am thinking about trying it again with my old src tree. It's cvsup'ing right now. Talking about RELENG_2_2. Have learned to prefer "cvsup -g" as sometimes cvsup gets confused and core dumps. When it does it in an Xterm, I know where. Then delete the problem files or directory, and re-run cvsup. Might not be such a bad idea to delete your problem source directory and re-cvsup it back into shape. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@hiwaay.net ===================================================================== The human mind ordinarily operates at only ten percent of its capacity -- the rest is overhead for the operating system. Well of course it is! There are only three situations where problems can occur, to the best of my knowledge: 1. Somebody has completely replaced an RCS file in the repository with a different RCS file that has a different set of revisions. This happened recently in ports/www/apache-current, and it led to a spate of problems. I have a plan for fixing this in the next release of CVSup, which I plan to have ready in time for the 2.2.5 CD. N.B., it is completely bogus to replace an RCS file in an existing repository -- but it happens sometimes. 2. HW or kernel errors have corrupted either an RCS file in the repository or one of your "checkouts*" files in the client, often without touching the modtime of the affected file. It is hard to anticipate all the different problems that can arise from something like this. But I'm working on making CVSup cope with it more gracefully. 3. You have started out with an existing tree (not created by CVSup) and have tried to adopt it into CVSup and update it. This mostly works, but if files have been deleted from the repository then you may end up with some extra files in your source tree. I'm working on providing a way to avoid this problem. If you get your tree using CVSup in the first place, and if there aren't hardware or kernel problems that spam files on your system or on the server, and if nobody does forbidden things to the repository, it works perfectly all the time. Also please note that CVSup _never_ gives you a corrupted file. At worst, it fails. If you get file corruption, it's caused by a HW or kernel failure on your machine or on the server. Every updated file gets its MD5 checksum verified every time. -- John Polstra jdp@polstra.com John D. Polstra & Co., Inc. Try NEC, Sony, Matsushita (aka Panasonic) or Toshiba, maybe Pioneer (aka TEAC, aka CDC) and Phillips (if they're still in the market in your area). Most "consumer" CDROMs are pretty trashy to begin with, so don't get your hopes up too far. Note also that the audio and data paths are completely separate, so there's little chance that the data buffer is available to the audio playback hardware. mike From owner-freebsd-stable Mon Sep 1 19:00:24 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id TAA07041 for stable-outgoing; Mon, 1 Sep 1997 19:00:24 -0700 (PDT) Received: from freebie.dcfinc.com (freebie.dcfinc.com [138.113.2.8]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id SAA06960 for ; Mon, 1 Sep 1997 18:59:48 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from chad@localhost) by freebie.dcfinc.com (8.8.3/8.8.3a) id SAA11988; Mon, 1 Sep 1997 18:57:47 -0700 (MST) From: "Chad R. I mean, "FreeBSD 2.1-STABLE #0: Tue Sep 2 11:57:44 MST 1997 chad@freefall.anasazi.com:/usr/src/sys/compile/FREEFALL" doesn't tell anything other than it is some kind of 2.1-stable and when I last compiled the kernel. I've noticed a rather curious problem. Netscape 4.02b7 worked fine when my machine had 32MB of RAM in it. No problems, it loaded up fine. I am referring to the FreeBSD-native version of the Communicator, of course. Today I upgraded to 64MB of RAM, and as soon as I did, Netscape 4.02b7 wouldn't load unless I removed the license query in preferences.js Just thought you'd find this interesting. Just a increase in RAM resulted in the problem(s) that everyone's discussing in both this forum and hackers (there the program appears to load, but nothing appears - it just takes up CPU and RAM). I'm running 2.2-STABLE as of Mon Aug 11, on a DTK 82430HX-based board (a GMB-P55IPS). The machine (now) has 64MB of EDO RAM, 512KB cache, IDE hdd's and a WD7000 (driving a NEC SCSI CD-drive). I think your mailer ate several eol signs, this error message looks rather garbled. After some formatting, the error message looks like this: mkdep -f .depend -a -I/sys -I/usr/obj/usr/src/tmp/usr/include /usr/src/usr.sbin/pciconf/pciconf.c /usr/src/usr.sbin/pciconf/pciconf.c:41: pci/pcivar.h: No such file or directory /usr/src/usr.sbin/pciconf/pciconf.c:42: pci/pci_ioctl.h: No such file or directory mkdep: compile failed. (The first two lines should be one long line, I had to insert a line break because it was way too long). mkdep searches /sys and /usr/obj/usr/src/tmp/usr/include for pci/pcivar.h Unfortunately, the only location of that file is /usr/src/sys/pci/pcivar.h. That's why it fails. On my machine (2.2-stable via ctm), the same command works flawless. The reason: bash# /bin/ls -l / [...] lrwxrwxrwx 1 root wheel 11 23 Aug 02:26 sys -> usr/src/sys [...] This link was created during my first FreeBSD installation. It *is* needed and it *must* point to the sys directory within the source tree. You obviously killed it. Fix this and you should be able to compile the source tree. /s/Udo -- Udo Erdelhoff ue@nathan.ruhr.de "I have the heart of an innocent child -- in a small jar beside my bed." It's part of that question I think we need to keep asking ourselves... do we want to continue making FreeBSD easier for people to use, or do we want to preserve antiquated, customary structures because they're not "broken" for the clueful? It's a fine line in places, however I think this is a pretty clear-cut case. Of course, I know Jordan is aware of this, I just don't want the importance of something like this to be overlooked. It's the little things that are important in the long run, especially given that what we have works pretty well in the now. :) Thanks for listening, Doug Do thou amend thy face, and I'll amend my life. -Shakespeare, "Henry V" From owner-freebsd-stable Thu Sep 4 18:04:01 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id SAA05416 for stable-outgoing; Thu, 4 Sep 1997 18:04:01 -0700 (PDT) Received: from acromail.ml.org (acroal.vip.best.com [206.86.222.181]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id SAA05381; Thu, 4 Sep 1997 18:03:47 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (jamil@localhost) by acromail.ml.org (8.8.7/8.8.5) with SMTP id SAA03553; Thu, 4 Sep 1997 18:04:21 -0700 (PDT) Date: Thu, 4 Sep 1997 18:04:21 -0700 (PDT) From: "J. I assume that my make world worked well -- I didn't see any big errors. However, when I remade my kernel, I received the following message: Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode fault virtual address = 0x0 fault code = supervisor read, page not present instruction pointer = 0x8: 0x0 stack pointer = 0x10: 0xefbffd70 frame pointer = 0x10: 0xefbffd7c code segment = base 0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b = DPL 0, pres 1, def 32 1, gran 1 processor eflags = interrupt enabled, resume, IOPL = 0 current process = 129 (modload) interrupt mask = panic: page fault Then I have to do an immediate reboot. I have rebuilt the kernel a few times (I re-cvsup'd the /usr/src/sys for testing) and still get the same error. My kernel makefile is attached. Would this be better advised to be posted to -hackers? I wouldn't report a problem unless I had methodically determined the likely source of the problem, this has been going on for months and yes I would say I have tried at least 40 different disks, they weren't from the same manufacturer, in the same box, or in the same environment exposed to heavy electromagnetic radiation, i didn't leave them in the sun --- I'm telling you that I will bet 50 pesos this is either a buggy piece of motherboard hardware (micron) or more likely a buggy driver (as other operating systems [for example linux] do not have this problem) I also have a duplicate installation on my home machine and the floppy works fine [i.e. the floppy driver is doing something wierd], it is a different motherboard. So the overall conclusion is that for some reason the floppy driver is doing something (probably some optimization) causing it to fail. I am not the only person to have this problem i ran into someone on #freebsd that said that when he went for 2.1 to 2.2 some of his machines floppy drives stopped working --- yes I have also looked at the parameters in the kernel and played with them accordingly --- What info do I need to figure out this problem? So I found out what needed to be added to my /etc/group, fixed it and did a make installworld. I also posted a note to this list mentioning the issue and suggesting that some notice of this sort of change would be nice, in an obvious place (like /usr/src/README or this list). Today, 06 Sep, make world failed again. It appears that ppp now wants to be owned by the network group, which seems to be the ppp group with a new name (same group ID). Same solution, just edit /etc/group again. I subscribed to this list under the impression that this was where information about this sort of change was going to appear. This was discussed quite a bit on the cvs-committers list - a closed list for FreeBSD developers. It was agreed fairly early that we wouldn't cc any of the other lists as there is no point in shouting about something that's essentially a security hole. The ultimate decision (after the ``ppp'' group was committed) was that we'd include ``sliplogin'', making the original group name a bit inappropriate. I'm also guilty of not subscribing to freebsd-stable (I'm now rectifying this), so I'm afraid I didn't see the message below 'till Jordan pointed it out.
