I dont know whether it is feasable but have you looked into having a single file containing the name of the latest FreeBSD distribution and just using the include directive in apache to include it? That wouldn't work for FTP but it might make the web pages easier to maintain. It's quite simple to set up a Web server. Just install the apache port from ftp.freebsd.org and start putting web pages in /usr/local/www/data. A machine restart (or running httpd) gets you up and running. Mail is similarly easy, but it depends on how you want the mail to be sent, via POP or whatever. News is a bit trickier. It requires a huge amount of diskspace and a bit of configuration finesse. The mail archies at http://www.freesd.org would be a good resource for you. Are you trying ftp.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD? Unfortunately, our present release (2.1.6-RELEASE) is not available right now. Depending on your needs, you may be interested in downloading the 2.2-GAMMA (a "post-beta" version of our next major release), or 3.0-CURRENT (a very experimental version of a future release) distributions. You can find 2.2-GAMMA and 3.0-CURRENT in subdirectories with the respective names from ftp.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD. Be sure to read the README.TXT files in each directory! We also hope to have 2.1.7-RELEASE available soon, so please do check back from time to time! Some documents should be changed so unroff split them in smaller parts and create a table of contents. E.g. http://www.de.freebsd.org/~wosch/doc/papers/malloc.html looks nice and http://www.de.freebsd.org/~wosch/doc/psd/21.ipc/paper.html is 150KB large and bad formatted ;-( >although the cvs updates of the www >build directory are a bit bizzare because there is stuff checked >out from different places in the repository. Right, the SRCDIR= ${.CURDIR}/../../../../bin/csh/USD.doc etc. is a problem, I did a $ cvs co `find share/doc -name Makefile | xargs egrep SRCDIR= | awk '{print $NF}' | sed 's/.*\.\.\///' | sort -u | grep / ` to checkout bin/csh/USD.doc etc. directories.
