I think it's shaping up to be a Well, basically because everything under there is built from source and it's a comfort to know that anything in the tutorial section can be checked out, edited and checked back in as part of the doc distribution should someone wish to make a contribution. Your document, on the other hand, is not a FreeBSD Documentation project "product" and should therefore probably get a link under support, along with the other 3rd party resources. We're just looking for more feedback to better the "product". FWIW, the "IP Aliasing" section is also a link to another server so I didn't realize that this was the policy for the tutorials sections. When our stuff is done, or at least in better shape, I certainly have no quims about it residing on the FreeBSD servers as part of the official FreeBSD Documentation Project (assuming it's worthy of such honour) -- the only reason it's not right now is because it's changing so rapidly it would be very inconvenient to have it anywhere except on my server. The bottom line is that any link to increase our visibility would be appreciated. If the Guide can help anyone out, that's all we want - with maybe an added bonus of some feedback so we can make it better. cya, -Mark > > Jordan -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mark Mayo mark@vmunix.com RingZero Comp. http://www.vmunix.com/mark finger mark@vmunix.com for my PGP key and GCS code ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Win95/NT - 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to an an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor, written by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition. -UGU From owner-freebsd-www Sun Oct 26 23:59:23 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id XAA24633 for www-outgoing; Sun, 26 Oct 1997 23:59:23 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-www) Received: from time.cdrom.com (root@time.cdrom.com [204.216.27.226]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id XAA24628 for ; Sun, 26 Oct 1997 23:59:21 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jkh@time.cdrom.com) Received: from time.cdrom.com (jkh@localhost.cdrom.com [127.0.0.1]) by time.cdrom.com (8.8.7/8.6.9) with ESMTP id XAA06201; Sun, 26 Oct 1997 23:59:15 -0800 (PST) To: Mark Mayo cc: www@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Link to a new Tutorial ? This should probably be fixed - it's silly to have 99% conformance to a defacto standard and then ruin it with a single entry. :) > When our stuff is done, or at least in better shape, I certainly have > no quims about it residing on the FreeBSD servers as part of the > official FreeBSD Documentation Project (assuming it's worthy of such > honour) -- the only reason it's not right now is because it's changing so > rapidly it would be very inconvenient to have it anywhere except on my > server. I suggest a link under the support page then, right next to the entry for www.computerbits.com. Do you have a sentence or two's worth of descriptive HTML to tack in here, with appropriate URLs and such? I'd be happy to add it. And as far as feedback goes, it sure would be nice if you updated the sysinstall screen shots to a) be of something a little more recent vintage than 2.1.x and b) snapshot an actual working TCP setup screen rather than the one you have now which has the old display bug and looks terrible. :-) Jordan From owner-freebsd-www Mon Oct 27 00:05:24 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id AAA24988 for www-outgoing; Mon, 27 Oct 1997 00:05:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-www) Received: from gdi.uoregon.edu (gdi.uoregon.edu [128.223.170.30]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id AAA24983 for ; Mon, 27 Oct 1997 00:05:20 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from dwhite@gdi.uoregon.edu) Received: from localhost (dwhite@localhost) by gdi.uoregon.edu (8.8.7/8.8.5) with SMTP id AAA12560; Mon, 27 Oct 1997 00:05:17 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 27 Oct 1997 00:05:16 -0800 (PST) From: Doug White Reply-To: Doug White To: rjanzen@transbay.net cc: www@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Trying to find the newsletter - re: yahoo endorsement In-Reply-To: <344FA4C8.2CEF@transbay.net> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-www@FreeBSD.ORG X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk On Thu, 23 Oct 1997 rjanzen@transbay.net wrote: > It's been very hard to locate a direct reference to the newsletter > or to the Yahoo endorsement in the newsletter. We were just going to write it in LaTeX, but decided we would struggle through the SGML jungle instead. Using the Docbook DTD, which I assume is the prefered DTD of the Documentation Project, no? Docbook has been fairly good so far. How about: A Comprehensive Guide to FreeBSD - an attempt at a more readable, "book-like" tutorial explaining the FreeBSD Operating System. Intended for people new to both FreeBSD and UNIX. It should probably be mentioned that it (and the IP aliasing tutorial) are maintained by third parties, but it is clearly documentation about FreeBSD and should be on the documentation page. As an analogy, go to your friendly neighborhood Government Document Depository library and try to find stuff. Gov Docs are (usually) organized by the agency that produces them rather than topic. That's certainly the logic I followed when I requested the link, and probably the logic most will follow when they're looking for help. I guess it depends on if you want things listed in the tutorial section that aren't in the FreeBSD CVS tree (at least for now). I vote to allow the links on the documentation page. I know at least for my stuff, it will eventually make its way into the CVS tree where anyone can check it out, etc.. I'ts just not in there right now during the early development stages. That said, a link on the support page is appreciated as well.. I just think it will be easier for new users if they find the links with the rest of the documentation. cya, -Mark > > As an analogy, go to your friendly neighborhood Government > Document Depository library and try to find stuff. I ll like to know if there is a way to become a mirror of FreeBSD, and what are the requisites to become a mirror, if you provide some kind of support and what are the responsabilities at our side, mecanisms of actualization and thinks like that. The future of network broadcasting is here! Now is your chance for you to own a Broadcast Affiliate of your very own! Imagine owning an ABC, NBC, or CBS broadcast affiliate. IMBC, the leading audio content provider of the Internet and provider to over 85 countries and millions of listeners world-wide, is making available licenses to broadcast live, original, interactive audio on your web site. ONLY 500 LICENSES ARE AVAILABLE! You do not need any special software or hardware. Just like TV and Radio networks have provided their affiliates, IMBC will provide you with all of the live audio content needed to own your own broadcast affiliate. The recent $100 million purchase of Sportsline by CBS, Microsoft's recent investment in Comcast Cable, its $500 million purchase of WebTv and its concentration on "Channels" in its new version of Internet Explorer, reinforce that the Internet is the broadcasting medium of the future. Not only will your site become more valuable due to the exclusive content, but advertisers will flock to you because you can provide to them both banner and audio advertising. For more information on owning an IMBC affiliate, simply reply or e-mail affiliate@mail.imbc.com with your name and telephone number and state "I would like more information." Thank you for your time! Respectfully yours, The IMBC Team. It depends on your traffic volume. If you get hundreds of thousands of hits a day, FreeBSD will definately prove itself faster and more reliable. Running months at a time without having to reboot is a strength of FreeBSD. Some FreeBSD systems have been known to run well over a year without needing a reboot. On the other hand, if you only get a few thousand hits and 100% availability isn't important, it probably doesn't make that much of a difference. FreeBSD will probably be more secure. Microsoft is really quite new to TCP/IP and Internet applications and their software is still pretty easy to break from the outside. It is *essential* that you closely track bug fixes. There are security bugs in any operating system, including FreeBSD, but rarely are they so large and easy to take advantage of as are the bugs in the Windows95/NT. > If I just want to > try it, is it easy to uninstall from Win95? To share the hard drive, each operating system needs its own partition so if your hard drive isn't already partitioned, it could be a bit of a hassle. There is a program called FIPS that will repartition a disk without requiring a backup and restore, but I've never used it and would strongly recommend a backup before using it anyway. I hope this helps! -john From owner-freebsd-www Sat Nov 1 17:43:37 1997 Return-Path: Received: (from root@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id RAA20224 for www-outgoing; Sat, 1 Nov 1997 17:43:37 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-www) Received: from wwwbc.com.
