The first thing to bear in mind is that the AS200 typically only has *one* flash prom onboard. If you install the ARC firmware, you'll be left with an ARC-only system (and getting back from there is not supported, although it is possible). I used bootp/tftpboot to perform the firmware upgrade; I don't actually recall whether it was the .sys or .exe file that you want to boot, but it's easy enough to try both of them. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Wed Oct 21 12:38:56 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA29721 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 12:38:56 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from calis.BlackSun.org (slip-ppp-4-198.escape.com [205.160.46.198]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA29698 for ; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 12:38:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from don@calis.BlackSun.org) Received: from localhost (don@localhost) by calis.BlackSun.org (8.8.8/8.8.7) with SMTP id PAA15365; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 15:37:50 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from don@calis.BlackSun.org) Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 15:37:50 -0400 (EDT) From: Don To: Mike Smith cc: mark thompson , tcrimi+@andrew.cmu.edu, freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: alphastation 200 In-Reply-To: <199810211740.KAA00830@dingo.cdrom.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > > version they have there is 6.8. Put a blank FAT formatted floppy in the floppy drive. Run mkboot.exe and when it asks for a disk image use the one you typed in earlier (aka as200_v6_8.exe) and wait for the program to finish. Now you have your boot disk for the alpha to update the SRM console. To run the program boot your alpha and put the floppy in the drive. At the console type: boot dva0 The utility is pretty self explanatory and you should simply be able to select or type update and the machine will do the update. When it is done you will power down and let it sit for 20 seconds and then when you reboot you will be using the new SRM firmware. > I had some interesting adventures with an AS200 and firmware upgrades. > The first thing to bear in mind is that the AS200 typically only has > *one* flash prom onboard. I have switched between ARC and SRM several times already. Updating SRM from SRM is just the way i described. Updating to ARC from ARC is also pretty simple and there are plenty of docs on it out there. Updating to ARC from SRM is simply a matter of choosing update arc from the boot menu when the floppy boots or typing "update arc" (depends on revision of the software. Older ones required the typing of "update arc" the newer ones are menu driven.) The only slightly tricky update is from ARC back to SRM but even that isnt hard. You put the file as200_v6_8.exe on a floppy and rename it fwupdate.exe Now put this floppy into your alpha and boot it. When ARC loads there is a choice for updating firmware or booting a disk (to be honest i forget which and I dont want to find out again :) Boot the floppy with fwupdate.exe and you can then reinstall the SRM firmware onto your system. It is fully supported on the alphastation 200's and not just possible. There are a lot of docs out there on this but they mostly come from the linux ppl who want to make sure ppl know how to put their systems back to their orignial states if they ever want to. -don To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Wed Oct 21 12:51:54 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA01339 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 12:51:54 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (dingo.cdrom.com [204.216.28.145]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA01334 for ; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 12:51:53 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (localhost.cdrom.com [127.0.0.1]) by dingo.cdrom.com (8.9.1/8.8.8) with ESMTP id MAA01582; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 12:54:00 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Message-Id: <199810211954.MAA01582@dingo.cdrom.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 To: Don cc: Mike Smith , mark thompson , tcrimi+@andrew.cmu.edu, freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: alphastation 200 In-reply-to: Your message of "Wed, 21 Oct 1998 15:37:50 EDT." Looks like a misreading of the update documentation on my part; there's a caution that it's not possible to update from the ARC console for this release in the release notes, but on rereading it it's no longer clear whether it simply shares the same numerical confusion as the rest of the document or whether it really does just apply to ARC 4.41 and the AS400. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Wed Oct 21 13:01:57 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA02697 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 13:01:57 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from calis.BlackSun.org (slip-ppp-4-198.escape.com [205.160.46.198]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA02686 for ; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 13:01:52 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from don@calis.BlackSun.org) Received: from localhost (don@localhost) by calis.BlackSun.org (8.8.8/8.8.7) with SMTP id QAA15416; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 16:01:25 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from don@calis.BlackSun.org) Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 16:01:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Don To: Mike Smith cc: mark thompson , tcrimi+@andrew.cmu.edu, freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: alphastation 200 In-Reply-To: <199810211954.MAA01582@dingo.cdrom.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > Actually, it is true. You can switch back to SRM from ARC as i have done this several times already. I can not speak to the AS400 as I have never used one. I just wanted to point out that one wouldnt be stuck with an ARC-only system with no way to get back to SRM easily. As for the DEC documentation ... it is often confusing, mislabeled or numbered and it doesnt cover anything unrelated to NT or Digital UNIX. -don To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Wed Oct 21 13:09:30 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA03703 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 13:09:30 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from lgchexch003.lgc.com ([134.132.75.221]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA03698 for ; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 13:09:28 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from JKing@lgc.com) Received: by lgchexch003.lgc.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.1960.3) id ; Wed, 21 Oct 1998 15:08:47 -0500 Message-ID: From: Jim King To: "'freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org'" Subject: Where's the snapshot? On the Multia/UDB there is a "Fail Safe Loader" mode. Set a jumper ("FSL") and power it up and it will boot the SRM from a floppy. (probably requires a special format, DEC's ftp site has images and instructions) Then you are up running SRM. Put a "update" floppy in and type "BLAST" and it updates the flash PROM. (Both SRM and (the useless) ARC in the Multia's case.) Then you restore the original jumper setting. I don't know if your machine has this feature, but it would be worth checking. -Dave To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Fri Oct 23 11:15:49 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id LAA26656 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Fri, 23 Oct 1998 11:15:49 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from sensi.spb.su (fil-1.dux.ru [193.124.28.5]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id LAA26632 for ; Fri, 23 Oct 1998 11:15:45 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from vadik@sensi.spb.su) Received: (from vadik@localhost) by sensi.spb.su (8.8.8/8.8.8) id WAA00820; Fri, 23 Oct 1998 22:15:36 +0400 (MSD) (envelope-from vadik) Message-ID: <19981023221536.A803@sensi.spb.su> Date: Fri, 23 Oct 1998 22:15:36 +0400 From: vadik likholetov To: David Seifert Cc: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: getting SRM References: <199810231705.KAA13322@eng4.sequent.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.93.2 In-Reply-To: <199810231705.KAA13322@eng4.sequent.com>; from David Seifert on Fri, Oct 23, 1998 at 10:05:53AM -0700 Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Fri, Oct 23, 1998 at 10:05:53AM -0700, David Seifert wrote: > > I have alphapc 164sx. > > The trouble is -- it has alphabios , so I can't gat an SRM > > console to get it bootetd by anything more usable ;-) than windows nt. > > I've got some files as fwupdate from ftp.digital.com/bla.bla.bla/firmware/alphapc164sx/v5.2/. > > But Alphabois simply hangs on this upgrade. > > May be someone else there have solved already this problem? > > On the Multia/UDB there is a "Fail Safe Loader" mode. > Set a jumper ("FSL") and power it up and it will boot the > SRM from a floppy. Ok. I've got mkboot.exe file from ftp://digital.com/, and I've made two floppies under dos -- one from the file with .exe extension, second from the file with .sys extension(there it'w warned me that is have "MOB" header). Than I switched Fail-Safe Boot jummper to Fail-Safe position. After the power-on, the system starts beeping me (. -short beep, space is a pause, - is long beep). . .. ... there it's was trying to boot from the diskette -- the diskette (the result was equial on both diskettes) was inserted and after about 2 seconds pause it starts to beep in the following manner: .. .. - .. .. - upto infinity :-( any suggesions's what's going on and what to try next? I do not want to loose usability of such workstation just installing NT on it :-( ;-) -- vadik likholetov To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Sat Oct 24 00:28:39 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id AAA22876 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 00:28:39 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from po6.andrew.cmu.edu (PO6.ANDREW.CMU.EDU [128.2.10.106]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id AAA22868 for ; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 00:28:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tcrimi+@andrew.cmu.edu) Received: (from postman@localhost) by po6.andrew.cmu.edu (8.8.5/8.8.2) id DAA18231 for freebsd-alpha@freebsd.org; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 03:28:01 -0400 (EDT) Received: via switchmail; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 03:28:01 -0400 (EDT) Received: from unix14.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 03:27:10 -0400 (EDT) Received: from unix14.andrew.cmu.edu via qmail ID ; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 03:27:08 -0400 (EDT) Received: from mms.4.60.Jun.27.1996.03.02.53.sun4.51.EzMail.2.0.CUILIB.3.45.SNAP.NOT.LINKED.unix14.andrew.cmu.edu.sun4m.54 via MS.5.6.unix14.andrew.cmu.edu.sun4_51; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 03:27:08 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 03:27:08 -0400 (EDT) From: Thomas Valentino Crimi To: freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: PCI mapping error Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I am working on a driver for the DEC 21030, ZXLp-E[123] card. What sort of values are you getting back in pa/va? Is this on an Alpha, or do you have one of these cards in a PC? I've been working on an AlphaStation 200 4/233. On the PCI bus are also ncr and de drivers, which are working just fine. To answer one of Mike Smith's questions, va and pa are both set to 0x88000000, I also double checked the mem-map register on the card at one point. I'm going to be grabbing a PC with PCI support later on tonight and see what pops up. Oh, another note. Before I tried out the read/write functions, I tried using direct memory access, this paniced the kernel: manual retype: fatal kernel trap: trap entry = 0x2 (memory management fault) a0 = 88400000 a1 = 0x1 a2 = 0x1 ... If this is a more telling than read/write, I'll do a full register dump and whatever else may help (show map gives another fault, unaligned access) On a note, this card worked under AlphaLinux-XWindows before I got to thinking it should do more than just be an X display. A cvs update as of a little over 24 hours ago. The onboard ethernet (rev 0x24 int a irq 5 on pci0.11.8) is doing just fine. I do 90% of my edits over ssh. Time to try a new kernel I guess; I was using the 3.0-RELEASE alpha kernel. You should be able to supply '-v' when you load or boot it, ie. disk1a:> load kernel -v disk1a:> boot but there was a bug in the i386 code which Doug probably copied; you can work around it with: disk1a:> set boot_verbose=yes -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-alpha" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-alpha Sat Oct 24 17:32:34 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA19638 for freebsd-alpha-outgoing; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 17:32:34 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from octopus.originative.co.uk (originat.demon.co.uk [158.152.220.9]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id RAA19630 for ; Sat, 24 Oct 1998 17:32:31 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from paul@originative.co.uk) Received: by OCTOPUS with Internet Mail Service (5.5.1960.3) id ; Sun, 25 Oct 1998 01:31:30 +0100 Message-ID: From: Paul Richards To: "'Thomas Valentino Crimi'" , Mike Smith Cc: mjacob@feral.com, freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: RE: PCI mapping error Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1998 01:31:22 +0100 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.1960.3) Content-Type: text/plain Sender: owner-freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > -----Original Message----- > From: Thomas Valentino Crimi [mailto:tcrimi+@andrew.cmu.edu] > Sent: Sunday, October 25, 1998 1:13 AM > To: Mike Smith > Cc: mjacob@feral.com; freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.ORG > Subject: Re: PCI mapping error > > > Excerpts from mail: 24-Oct-98 Re: PCI mapping error by Mike > Smith@smith.net.au > > Whoa, hold it right there.
