If its based on the same chip as everything else, why pay more? :-) When I bought my Tekram DC-390F for $114 from 5-OClock Computers last year, everybody else was selling the same card for $150, and CSC still wants $139 for their version today. Any word on that? I'm using EPSON's GT-5500 (SCSI version) with SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) on our FreeBSD box. Maybe Microtek's scanner alson can be used with sane. The home page for the SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) project is located at http://www.mostang.com/sane/. While SANE seems to be a bit Linux centric right now (in terms of user & developer-community), the SANE distribution has been known to build under FreeBSD and a host of other OSes as well. Indeed, I'd very much welcome closer collaboration with FreeBSD developers. At the very least, it would be great if we could keep the SANE web-page up-to-date as far as FreeBSD support is concerned. If anyone is interested, let me know. Based from what I see in the man-page, the Microtek E3 scanner should work with the microtek backend. As always, YMMV. You need to worry more about which SCSI cards are compatible with FreeBSD. Any DDS-2-certified tapes will work. A refurbished drive will probably not come with anything other than the drive (no free tape, no manual, no cable, no power cord, etc.). I don't think Win95 has a SCSI backup program, but Windows NT does. Win98 beta supposedly does, also. You can buy backup software for Win95 for ~$75 (Seagate Backup Exec or something like that). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael L. Expensive tapes. Cheap, slower, less durable > drives (versus DAT). I have the Tecmar NS8i (internal) drive, which I believe is basically the same as the Exabyte. I agree about the expensive tapes, but aside from that it seems to be working just fine so far. Actual speed is from 570 kByte/s up to around 1.1 MByte/s, depending on how well your data will compress (the Tecmar unit has builtin compression). > Of course, it's your choice... Of course. I tend to be skeptical about the "less durable" claim, since the Travan drives are so much simpler mechanically. It is a PCI card, so settings are assigned by the motherboard. Both SCSI and non-SCSI(If there is a non-SCSI) I am using the internal SCSI model with good success, and I'm sure the external SCSI version would work just as well. I do not think the IDE version would work. All SCSI tapes are more or less equal in the eyes of the kernel. You need a SCSI controller listed, of course, and a line like device st0 for the SCSI tape driver. -- Matthew Hunt * Think locally, act globally. http://mph124.rh.psu.edu/~mph/pgp.key for PGP public key 0x67203349. Please excuse the above, but since the drive will arrive bare. Could you provide any hints as to getting the drive operational. I know what must be done w/i FreeBSD and hopefully my backup sw in Windoze 95 will be near self configuring. I'm asking for any hardware installation tricks (besides the obvious) I should know. I'm wandering about compatible SCSI cards, software to drive it > in Windoze 95, is one tape included, the which 3M tape do I buy, error rate, > MTBF Alright, a black mark for Seagate. The data was there a couple of months ago. The Seagate/Conner/Archive 4326 is a DDS-1/DDS-2 drive including compression. If 2G is enough, then 90M DDS-1 tapes at $7 or so work perfectly fine. If your data compresses then you might get 4G on that tape. The 120M DDS-2 tapes cost about twice the DDS-1 tape. Read/Write speeds are the same, about 400k/sec uncompressed, 800k/sec if compression works for you. The STD28000N is a newer version with more RAM and faster data rates. The 4326 may have a sticker aluding to that fact. STD28000N's I've seen have a sticker mentioning its a replacement for the 4326. I think there are 3 generations of this unit, the 4326, the Conner/Seagate 8000, then the current 28000. Don't confuse the 8000 with the Travan 8000. Seagate's site once had details on how to tell Archive/Conner/Seagate tape generations from the front. There are 3 grooves on the bezel. It all depends on what groove the LED's and eject button are on. Mine are in the bottom groove. I also have an external 2G with LED and buttons in the middle groove, and another in the bottom. The 2G in the bottom only does 170k/sec while the 2G in the middle does 400k/sec, as does my 4326 with eject in the bottom groove. As always, before buying verify with the vendor that the device is what you think it is. The drive from Bason may be refurbished. In any case iron out the warranty in advance. Also make sure you know what form factor it comes in. The 4326RP is a 3.5" drive in 5-1/4" rails with a 5-1/4" face plate. That's what I have. External models of this drive come in a very nice enclosure from the factory. Much nicer than the aftermarket enclosures. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@nospam.hiwaay.net ===================================================================== The human mind ordinarily operates at only ten percent of its capacity -- the rest is overhead for the operating system. When ordering the drive, you might tell Bason you need an internal SCSI cable for it. You didn't say if you have any other SCSI devices, one would assume so if you already have a high end SCSI card. If you have a wide internal SCSI cable with a spare connector which stretches to the bay you would install the tape drive then ASA Computers http://www.asacomputers.com (and others I'm sure) sell wide to narrow female to female connectors for about $13 each. In this situation your Adaptec card should be terminated and the last wide HD terminated. The middle tape drive should not be terminated. This means you will remove 2 or 3 resistor SIPs from the 4326. (newer models had termination jumper selectable). Another solution which prevents you from being able to use your external SCSI connector is to use a narrow 50-pin internal SCSI cable for the tape drive. About $3 to $10. In this case you terminate the tape drive and configure the Adaptec to terminate only the extra wide bits on the SCSI bus. The 2940UW has both narrow and wide connectors inside. -- David Kelly N4HHE, dkelly@nospam.hiwaay.net ===================================================================== The human mind ordinarily operates at only ten percent of its capacity -- the rest is overhead for the operating system. The problem is that the only ether card I have for it is an SMC 8016T/PC, a card that is apparently supported by nobody. This is not necessarily the end of the world since other ether cards exist. What I would like are suggestions as to which PC Card ether adaptors work well with freebsd. I would prefer a 10/100 card, but that is not a requirement. Please either respond to or cc my address since I am not currently subscribed to either hardware or questions. Alternatively, it might be an SMC9000-compatible, for which there is an ISA driver (with no pccard support). > This is not necessarily the end of the world since other ether cards exist. > What I would like are suggestions as to which PC Card ether adaptors work > well with freebsd.
