As it turns out they have a 6.4G as primary master and an ATAPI CD-ROM device as secondary master. There is also an ATAPI ZIP in it (the BIOS didn't report its location). The wcd0 probe was hanging quite a bit and in the end the CD-ROM wasn't recognized. Since I can't just rejumper and rewire their brand new computer without them throwing me out, I'm stuck. They'd like FreeBSD, but they don't understand the benefits, yet, so at this point this is a very hard sell. Would 2.2.6 be a cure for this? I'm not sure how the ATAPI ZIP will affect things, but, as long as it is secondary slave it shouldn't hurt anything else. In my IDE system, the W95 disk is primary master, the FreeBSD disk is primary slave, and the ATAPI CDROM is secondary master, and it works fine. Booteasy installed on both IDE disks makes it easy to boot either W95 or FreeBSD, reboot remotely (boots to previously booted OS even though it is on secondary drive). It worked this way under 2.2.x and now under 3.0-current. > > Since I can't just rejumper and rewire their brand new computer without > them throwing me out, I'm stuck. Re-configuring their computer isn't really what is needed. I'm just guessing that what will cure it is a slave IDE disk on the primary IDE. At least for me, that is what de-confused the IDE location/naming problems I had. So, my advice is just to install an expensive IDE disk as the primary slave and see if that works. This is a minimal investment in both money, time, and risk. You could even have 2.2.x already installed on the disk. Just set the fstab entries correctly in advance. As always, I might be totally confused - additions, corrections, deletions welcome. -- Hugh LaMaster, M/S 233-21, ASCII Email: hlamaster@mail.arc.nasa.gov NASA Ames Research Center Or: lamaster@george.arc.nasa.gov Moffett Field, CA 94035-1000 No Junkmail: USC 18 section 2701 Phone: 650/604-1056 Disclaimer: Unofficial, personal *opinion*. Since the CD-ROM works in W95 (which uses the BIOS) and I saw it show up during the BIOS' detection, I assume the secondary channel is enabled. I'll take a look at the exact setup again. I think I just gave up a little too quickly. Thanks for the response, the point seems to be that it SHOULD be found as secondary master, although as the other reply suggests a primary slave might be helpful. I'll probably just donate my 540MB drive to my friends with 2.2.6 preinstalled, since there is no AGP support in the X included with 2.2.5 anyway. -- Gabor Kincses (gabor@acm.org) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Mon May 11 19:47:06 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id TAA13889 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Mon, 11 May 1998 19:47:06 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from antipodes.cdrom.com ([210.145.37.178]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA13870 for ; Mon, 11 May 1998 19:46:59 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from mike@antipodes.cdrom.com) Received: from antipodes.cdrom.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by antipodes.cdrom.com (8.8.8/8.8.5) with ESMTP id SAA00728; Mon, 11 May 1998 18:43:10 -0700 (PDT) Message-Id: <199805120143.SAA00728@antipodes.cdrom.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0zeta 7/24/97 To: Gabor Kincses cc: hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: ATAPI (yet again) In-reply-to: Your message of "Mon, 11 May 1998 12:27:38 CDT." <3557350A.6728D695@acm.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 18:43:09 -0700 From: Mike Smith Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org > OK, I took the CDs and a boot floppy (all 2.2.5) to my friends' house to > install FreeBSD on their brand new Dell box. > > As it turns out they have a 6.4G as primary master and an ATAPI CD-ROM > device as secondary master. One possible solution would be to buy SmartBits test set ($17000 for the box with 20 slots, $1500 each 10BT card, $4000 - S/W). Another solution could be to use 2 FreeBSD PCs w/4..5 Ethernet cards, depending on the number of free (PCI) slots. Suppose we could group the cards as following: PC1 PC2 +----+ +----+ | E1 |-subnet1-| E1 | | E2 |-subnet2-| E2 | | E3 |-subnet3-| E3 | | E4 |-subnet4-| E4 | +----+ +----+ Now we would connect: subnet1 - bridge1 - subnet2 subnet3 - bridge2 - subnet4 The obvious problem is to force FreeBSD to send packets through the interface cards even though both sender and receiver cards are located on the same PC. My questions are: 1. Is it possible? (I'm really very new to this field) 2. Can it be done easily (I'd prefer not to hack the kernel). 3. Are there any recommendations for multiport serial cards for use with FreeBSD? Would anyone please relay good or bad experiences with any products under FreeBSD? One of my options is to purchase a couple of Aurora ISA or PCI cards (replacing the Sbus cards and the Suns) and use them with the existing Aurora hardware that I've got. W95 identifies it as an 'AMD PCNet Family Ethernet Adapter' (and does just fine with it. FreeBSD 2.2.6 identifies it as: lnc1 rev 22 int a irq 11 on pci0:11:0 but it doesn't show up in a subsequent 'ifconfig -a'. Going through the mailing list archives, I found notes from Stefan Esser and Terry Lambert saying: find out the port address it's using, and configure that in explicitly with 'boot -c'. I'm having a few problems with this: * I have no idea what port address it's using; I've made several reasonable guesses, without success; and * the boot config utility doesn't know about lnc1 -- it knows only about lnc0. I've done a little digging, and established that the PCI probe reads the value 0xfcc0 out of one of the map registers, and then calls lnc_pci_attach with an iobase value of 0xfcc0. But this fails: both lance_probe and pcnet_probe strike out. Here is the relevant section of 'boot -v' output (I put in a couple of debugging printf's, which are included below): lnc1 rev 22 int a irq 11 on pci0:11:0 mapreg[10] type=1 addr=0000fcc0 size=0020. mapreg[14] type=0 addr=fedffc00 size=0020. lnc_pci_attach: entry lnc_pci_attach: iobase == 0xfcc0 lance_probe: returning UNKNOWN pcnet_probe: chip id == 0xffffffff pcnet_probe: unknown chip id 0xfffff lnc_pci_attach: lnc_attach_ne2100_pci(1, 0xfcc0) returns 0x0 So: what's going wrong here? If someone can give me 2 minutes' worth of guidance to point me in the right direction, I'll be happy to take a crack at code changes to make it work. I'm told Linux works great with this chip in this notebook, and obviously Win95 works (well, as well as it ever works :->); so it can't be impossible. Any help appreciated. If I can work through this, I'll take a look at why FreeBSD hangs probing the CD-ROM. Jim Shankland Flying Fox Computer Systems, Inc. Well, it's a PCI device, so the port address is not needed.. The PCI driver will detect it if it knows about it. > So: what's going wrong here? If someone can give me 2 minutes' worth > of guidance to point me in the right direction, I'll be happy to take > a crack at code changes to make it work. I'm told Linux works great > with this chip in this notebook, and obviously Win95 works (well, as > well as it ever works :->); so it can't be impossible. It looks like the PCI drivers don't understand the card, this maybe because it has an ID they don't know about, but would be capable of driving. Perhaps the author of the PCNet driver can help you. --------------------------------------------------------------------- |Daniel O'Connor software and network engineer for Genesis Software | |http://www.gsoft.com.au | |The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them to| |choose from. -- Andrew Tanenbaum | --------------------------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri May 15 06:06:15 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA19959 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Fri, 15 May 1998 06:06:15 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from ns1.walls-media.com (ns1.walls-media.com [12.6.113.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id GAA19882 for ; Fri, 15 May 1998 06:06:05 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from bryanb@walls-media.com) Received: from ntwksbry ([12.6.113.54]) by ns1.walls-media.com (Post.Office MTA v3.1.2 release (PO205-101c) ID# 0-0U10L2S100) with SMTP id AAA354 for ; Fri, 15 May 1998 08:03:30 -0500 Message-ID: <00c401bd8002$36696a50$3671060c@ntwksbry.walls-media.com> From: "Bryan Bunch" To: Subject: Intel EtherExpress 100/B Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 08:06:02 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.2106.4 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.2106.4 Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org What's the command to put an Intel EtherExpress 100/B in 100TX and full duplex mode under 2.2.5? I have chosen all its components, except the graphics card. My first choice was the Matrox Millennium II 8 MB, but my local dealer says that this card only exists for PCI; only the Millennium II 4MB is available for AGP bus. Now, I'm reconsidering my choice of graphics card, so I would be very grateful for any recommendations. I know that there are graphics adapters better than the Millennium II, but the Xfree86's driver for this card has very good reputation. I'm searching for a good card _very well_ supported by Xfree86. Heh - if you want something that's supported _very well_ by XFree86 then the Mill II isn't your best bet either - it works well enough to use but there are still wrinkles here and there and the support is by no means flawless yet. I use AcceleratedX on my Matrox and wouldn't use anything else. If you want something that's _very well_ supported by XFree86 then buy an S3 card. :-) - Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Fri May 15 09:52:04 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id JAA26761 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Fri, 15 May 1998 09:52:04 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from fanfic.org (fanfic.org [205.150.35.145]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id JAA26739 for ; Fri, 15 May 1998 09:51:49 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dstenn@fanfic.org) Received: from fanfic.org (localhost.fanfic.org [127.0.0.1]) by fanfic.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id MAA05989; Fri, 15 May 1998 12:50:50 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from dstenn@fanfic.org) Posted-Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 12:50:50 -0400 (EDT) Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 12:50:50 -0400 (EDT) From: Dennis Tenn To: "Jose M. I believe that the driver for any ATI Mach64 based card is even more stable than the Matrox cards (last I heard the Matrox drivers were still pretty experimental mind you...) I know many people (including myself) who use Mach64 based cards which have had no problems. I have a 4MB PCI Matrox Millenium and, in 1152x900x24 mode, netscape's buttons only render in black and white. :) At other depths it does not happen. With Xaccel 4.1, I have no odd rendering or colormap weirdness at the same resolution and depth. - Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Sat May 16 02:53:11 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id CAA20499 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Sat, 16 May 1998 02:53:11 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from post.mail.demon.net (post-12.mail.demon.net [194.217.242.41]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id CAA20494 for ; Sat, 16 May 1998 02:53:04 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dmlb@ragnet.demon.co.uk) Received: from (ragnet.demon.co.uk) [158.152.46.40] by post.mail.demon.net with smtp (Exim 1.82 #2) id 0yadeL-00024k-00; Sat, 16 May 1998 10:53:05 +0100 Received: from dmlb by ragnet.demon.co.uk with local (Exim 1.73 #1) id 0yabzn-0007F9-00; Sat, 16 May 1998 09:07:07 +0100 Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.2 [p0] on FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 09:07:04 +0100 (BST) From: Duncan Barclay To: "Matthew N. Anyone wanna do a generic multi I2C bus to RS-232 adapter (at least > 19.2k)? It's usually easier to do these on the parallel port (god knows how many phase locked loops I've programmed down that!). One "problem" with the I2C is that it is not a TTL compatible bus, so a bit of hardware is need to convert the logic levels. Secondly, the framing on the I2C bus doesn't lend itself well to UART style parity/start/stop bits. I would suggest that a parallel port driver be plugged into the ppbus framework. It owuld be something I would find useful at work! --- ________________________________________________________________________ Duncan Barclay | God smiles upon the little children, dmlb@ragnet.demon.co.uk | the alcoholics, and the permanently stoned. ________________________________________________________________________ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Sat May 16 04:52:38 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id EAA04644 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Sat, 16 May 1998 04:52:38 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from Octopussy.MI.Uni-Koeln.DE (Octopussy.MI.Uni-Koeln.DE [134.95.166.20]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id EAA04639; Sat, 16 May 1998 04:52:31 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from se@dialup124.zpr.uni-koeln.de) Received: from dialup124.zpr.Uni-Koeln.DE (dialup124.zpr.Uni-Koeln.DE [134.95.219.124]) by Octopussy.MI.Uni-Koeln.DE (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id NAA14779; Sat, 16 May 1998 13:52:18 +0200 (MET DST) Received: (from se@localhost) by dialup124.zpr.Uni-Koeln.DE (8.8.8/8.6.9) id NAA02795; Sat, 16 May 1998 13:30:28 +0200 (CEST) X-Face: " Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 13:30:27 +0200 From: Stefan Esser To: Luis Munoz , freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Cc: Stefan Esser Subject: Re: Multiple PCI busses on a Compaq Proliant 1600 References: <3.0.5.32.19980515103507.03a1b520@pop.cantv.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.89i In-Reply-To: <3.0.5.32.19980515103507.03a1b520@pop.cantv.net>; from Luis Munoz on Fri, May 15, 1998 at 10:35:07AM -0400 Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On 1998-05-15 10:35 -0400, Luis Munoz wrote: > > Hi there: > > On a Compaq Proliant 1600, ROM Rev E31. I only learned about these Proliant machines after 2.2.6 was released, but the support for the 1200 and 1600 has been commited to -stable in March. Just fetch a recent version of /sys/pci/pcisupport.c or apply the following patch: > Perhaps the PCI bridges are not being recognized correctly? PCI to PCI bridge chips are defined in the PCI specs to be compatible without the need of drivers specific to each such chip. But in the case of multiple host to PCI bridges, there is no standard that defines the registers to hold the range of attached buses (the original specification expected to have only bus 0 directly connected to the CPU and all other buses behind PCI to PCI bridges), and for that reason, support for chip sets with multiple host bridges is required. > I have physical access to the PCs and can provide specific chip > numbers if req'd. One problem with the parallel port is that it won't be sufficient for remote sites that want temperature monitoring hardware hanging off a serial port. I think any less than simple design (I can get a $99 I2C to RS-232 dongle from a number of different places.) implies multiple I2C busses, a small PIC or processor and other stuff. I'm actually talking with the guys that make the HLT about doing this project. > I would suggest that a parallel port driver be plugged into the ppbus > framework. I think the beneficiaries of AGP will really be gamers, particularly those using 3-D accelerators. That faster bus between the card and the RAM can be used to move textures fast enough that main memory can be used to store them. Of course, this may ultimately prove to be a moot point, since manufacturers are now making cards with 8 and 12 MB of dedicated texture RAM, more than any forseeable games will use. K.S.
