I forget what you are buying for, I was going to say that if I was buying now I would go for a Ali 5 board, but I think I wouldn't bother. I tend to change MB+CPU every couple of years, disk and other toys are more interesting than CPU/RAM. The only reason I wanted more RAM was Netscape. Has anyone done any actual performance measurements with these two chipsets? I was rather leary of the Ali5 because ALI is an acer subsidiary and Acer's motherboard arm, AOpen, uses the MVP-3 in their super 7 board. I figure if ALI couldn't get a design win with their own companies, there's something you don't want to find out. I also had a friend with a cheap ALI board which had various nasty problems which only cropped up as one started adding cards. -castor To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Sun Sep 13 08:29:43 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id IAA10775 for freebsd-hardware-outgoing; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 08:29:43 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from laker.net (jet.laker.net [205.245.74.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id IAA10770 for ; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 08:29:41 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sfriedri@laker.net) Received: from nt (digital-pbi-135.laker.net [208.0.233.35]) by laker.net (8.9.0/8.9.LAKERNET.NO-SPAM.SPAMMERS.AND.RELAYS.WILL.BE.TRACKED.AND.PROSECUTED.) with SMTP id LAA09829; Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:29:02 -0400 Message-Id: <199809131529.LAA09829@laker.net> From: "Steve Friedrich" To: "Castor Fu" , "Duncan Barclay" Cc: "freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG" , "spork" Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:29:04 -0400 Reply-To: "Steve Friedrich" X-Mailer: PMMail 98 Professional (2.01.1600) For Windows NT (4.0.1381;3) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: "Cacheable memory"?? Did you send anything to the SCSI list about this? I don't remember seeing anything said about it. I've seen panics on -stable and -current with cdda2wav; they seem to be related to shared memory usage. It'll probably take someone more familiar with the VM system to sort them out, though. The problem doesn't seem to be directly attributable to CAM, but it my be exacerbated by CAM. It looks like cdrecord uses shared memory as well, so the panic may be similar. Can you send me a stack trace? Yeah, that's what it sounds like. The thing is, though, the passthrough driver waits until I/O completion to return to the user. i.e. the ioctl will block until everything is done. If for some reason cdrecord tries to delete the shared memory segment before the last transaction is complete, I can see how there would be a problem. It's also possible that there's a problem with my usage of vmapbuf() and vunmapbuf(), although you'd think I would have seen it by now. (I've been using it for over a year.) It might take a VM expert to figure this one out... The manufacturer was IWill and the chipset was an Aladdin V, (i.e. definitely the Super 7 chipset). I don't know what rev. I'm pretty sure it worked when the memory bus was clocked at 66 MHz. At first we suspected some interaction with NFS so we took NFS out of the kernel, but the problem persisted. In the end we decided to do a reinstall using the 2.2.7-RELEASE CD-ROM, because we need this system to work. So unfortunately I'm no longer able to reproduce the problem :-( Side note: we tried to coerce the system into producing a core dump using dumpon, without success. We did get it to panic into ddb though. Wish I had written down the call stack /me slaps forehead <*thwap*> > I've seen panics on -stable and -current with cdda2wav; they seem to be > related to shared memory usage. This problem (at least this panic) isn't particularly new, it would seem; the archives show messages referring to it dating back as far as 1995. So purely intuitively, without being hampered by any relevant knowledge on this topic, I tend to agree ;-) > It looks like cdrecord uses shared memory as well, so the panic may be > similar. I choose these cards to be able to speed up my network at 100Mbps I also bought a 3com dual speed hub, to be able to connect old machines at 10Mbps, and a plain 100Mbps 3com hub. When I use the dual speed hub, or the plain 100Mbps hub, The de driver autodetection seems OK, but at 100Mbps, the TX led of the board stays lit, and no communication seems to occur. The Hubs are OK because other machines (Compaq too) running NT do communicate together well. The use of ifconfig media and media-opt didn't solve the problem very much. I could obtain communications at 100Mbps, but with ping I had a 10% lost packets. But it seems that the requested options are not set-up in most cases. I couldn't try configuring with the dos utility since bringing this machine down brings the whole network down too (that's why I choose FreeBSD ! :-) Did anyone used these cards successfully at 100Mbps, and preferably with 3Com dual speed hub ( a friend of mine told me that he didn't like them because the switching engine was faulty ) ? If it worked properly, how ? Regards Fabrice Segura PS: Release notes for 2.2.7 said the compaq NetFlex 3 boards were supported. I own the Sony CDU-926S SCSI CD-recorder. It writes 2x, reads 6x, is rock-solid and stable, and works very well with FreeBSD. It was extremely cheap (compared to similar units) when I bought it (paid $289 back in March this year), and it's still very inexpensive. Avoid ATAPI (IDE) devices at all costs. True; there *is* a ALPHA quality driver for them, but it requires you use 3.0-CURRENT, and like I said, it's ALPHA quality (i.e. not guaranteed to work). The Sony I mentioned, on the other hand, has been absolutely rock solid and stable for me -- not a single bad disk yet! > - What software do I use to burn a cdrom? Look at /usr/ports/sysutils/cdrecord. This will allow you to burn either audio, data, or mixed-mode (audio + data) CD's. To grab audio tracks off of audio CD-ROMs (to make a "best of hits" compilation type CD), use /usr/ports/audio/tosha. > - What about CD-RW? Is this worth getting? Does it > work well? Not too sure about this one, as I've had little to no experience with CD-RW's. They are expensive (you will see cheaper ones, but these are invariable ATAPI/IDE, which you should avoid as outlined above). They do use a different type of media and a different recording format, which (I've heard that) some CD-ROM drives and audio CD players cannot read successfully; whereas, with CD-Recordables, I've never had a problem reading any of my data or audio disks on any of the players/drives I own (and I have quite a few older units). > Thanks a log! I can't find any instance of this information in the handbook. I remember using a CD-ROM made by EXP Computer. It was a 2x *without* a built-in soundcard. I believe the model was EXP CD-940E. It was actually an ATAPI CD-ROM with an PCMCIA IDE interface. I used this udner Linux's PCMCIA support, and I believe it will also work with FreeBSD's now, since it supports removable IDE interfaces. There's also another CD-ROM (it's either a Panasonic or Sony) that is based on a PCMCIA SCSI controller that the FreeBSD PCMCIA stuff supports. --- Donald Burr *NEW EMAIL ADDRESS!* | PGP: Your WWW HomePage: http://DonaldBurr.base.org/ ICQ#16997506 | right to Address: P.O. You are correct, Donald. CD-RW media reflects less light than CDRs and normal CDs. In order for a driver/player to read CD-RW media, they have to have an amplifier to increase the light output. Otherwise the reflected light levels are often too low to generate an adequate electrical signal. Most newer drives and high-quality players come with such amplifiers. Drives that do have them are usually labeled as being able to read CD-RW. The low-reflectivity problem may also occur with cheap CDR media (e.g., the green-tinted ones).
