I'm in the process (like in *RIGHT NOW*) setting up a remote CVS tree that I hope people will consider using for FreeBSD java development. Access will require that I know you have access to the actual Sun sources (I have ideas on how to do this), and that you connect to the site using SSH. I've got a machine setup to do this already, so I don't forsee any problems, but I am wondering if I actual do this if people will voluntarily give up 'local access' to their sources and instead try to move through a centralized tree on a remote site. If it does, please reply to the group. Note, unfortunately due to the nature of the sources, public access won't be made, and the CVS commit email may or may not be made available. The CVS tree is almost ready to go, but I have to go through it a bit and sanitize the bits. I'll probably setup a pseudo-private email list for folks to talk about actual JDK porting issues, but is this at all interesting to those who are actually hacking on the JDK sources? This version, reported by `java -version' is: java version "jdk1.1-dap:1998/01/07-05:19" This version corresponds to the patch kit, released this morning, as it was built by applying the patch kit to a fresh tree. The patch kit is found in patch-kit.tar.gz. There are several known bugs, and many unknown ones. 1. Certain Java applications can cause the X-Server to consume all the paging space in the system and die. If using one of the following window managers, this problem is ameliorated: mwm afterstep 2. Various SEGV and ABORT traps due to incompatabilities between Motif and lesstif. 3. The molecule viewer demo apps have stopped working. 4. Window manager interactions vis-a-vis initial window placement is ad-hoc, and the hacks made to get it to work with fvwm usually work, but occasionally, a window is placed on the screen, but subsequently jumps. Yes, provided that the company fills out (and intends to obey) the non-commercial license. That is what my company did. I did get one email later from someone in Sun (in Singapore) querying what my company was doing, but this was after they had approved the license. Seems like a sensible approach on their part. They just allowed me to upgrade to the 1.1.5 sources under the existing license (which was approved less than a year ago). With a reasonably slow link, I see this as a pain in the ass. However, I think the potential benefits (potentially) far outweigh the above. In suggesting a coordinated approach, I was getting ready to quickly duck if the hairy finger of responsability turned to point in my direction. Getting the patches together to distribute initially was painful enough, and I have been wondering (in my sleep) how I was going to handle the second round of diffs, including others' diffs with mine. Sounds like you have a plan. > > If it does, please reply to the group. I'm willing to be the 'man in the middle' if I can get those folks hacking on sources to agree to it. That means you and Amancio most recently, plus a guy in Japan and other folks who now seem willing to do work. :) > Sounds like you have a plan. Great, I'm doing minor tweaks on the CVS tree right now. However, I do want to ask for a favor or someone with sources. Currently in my tree I have committed: 1) JDK1.1 2) JDK1.1.2 3) JDK1.1.3 I also have access to JDK1.1.5, but I didn't get JDK1.1.4. If someone is willing to give me a copy of it, I'd like to import it *before* I import JDK1.1.5, so we can see the revision history of things. Then, I'll import JDK1.1.5, and then we can apply the base FreeBSD patches and go from there. If no-one steps up to the plate and volunteers a copy of JDK1.1.4 by tomorrow, then I'll go ahead and skip that step. > Not having worked with one of these centralized CVS repositories before, > initial concerns include: > > - what if someone has the file checked out I want? CVS == Concurrent Version System (concurrent means in parallel, aka no locks) > - coordination of effort Email. > - resolution of conflicts (please: no #ifdefs) Each developer is responsible for resolving conflicts within the tree. So, if I commit some code, you can't commit until you 'update' your local copy to my bits, thereby forcing you to resolve the problem. If you don't like my solution, you are free to simply ignore them (essentially delete the new bits from your copy after it has been updated) and commit a version over top mine, but that would have been discussed in email and/or understandable given the commit message. In practice it works quite well, and rewards the diligent coder since the 'one who commits' to the tree wins. :) Nate From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 7 13:35:12 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) id NAA13293 for java-outgoing; Wed, 7 Jan 1998 13:35:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from freebsd1.cimlogic.com.au (cimlog.lnk.telstra.net [139.130.51.31]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id NAA13214 for ; Wed, 7 Jan 1998 13:34:20 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jb@freebsd1.cimlogic.com.au) Received: (from jb@localhost) by freebsd1.cimlogic.com.au (8.8.7/8.8.7) id IAA13018; Thu, 8 Jan 1998 08:39:33 +1100 (EST) (envelope-from jb) From: John Birrell Message-Id: <199801072139.IAA13018@freebsd1.cimlogic.com.au> Subject: Re: Motif question In-Reply-To: <199801072103.OAA03021@mt.sri.com> from Nate Williams at "Jan 7, 98 02:03:38 pm" To: nate@mt.sri.com (Nate Williams) Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 08:39:33 +1100 (EST) Cc: dap@damon.com, nate@mt.sri.com, freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG, gclarkii@main.brewich.com X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL32 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Nate Williams wrote: > I'm willing to be the 'man in the middle' if I can get those folks > hacking on sources to agree to it. That's up to whomever wants to hack on the sources. If you want to provide Sun fixes to the FreeBSD community, I have no problem with that. If you want to distribute the JDK with your product you cannot bundle it with your product unless you pay Sun the mega-$$ for that right. *HOWEVER*, you are allowed to bundle the JRE with your product (which is the JDK w/out the compiler), and if we get things going we should have a JRE available as well as a JDK. Am I able to cp the entire "work" directory recursively into say /usr/local/java? I noticed when I viewed ./work/bin/java it was still in script. Is that the way it is suppose to be? TIA Please reply to jwalt@mwci.net since I am only on the questions mailing list. Again, thank you. If subdirs include bin, lib, demo, etc. it sounds to me(I've been using java under Solaris for a long time now) like the correct directories. > I noticed when I viewed ./work/bin/java it was still in script. > Is that the way it is suppose to be? TIA Yes! It's exactly the same under Solaris. My guess is that the JavaSoft people wanted a way to abstract what was actually run from what platform java was running on. Under Solaris, for instance, it makes the decision of what thread library to use at invocation. If this helps, here's the first three lines of /usr/local/bin/java under Solaris: #! /bin/ksh # # @(#)java_wrapper.sh 1.31 97/09/02 > Please reply to jwalt@mwci.net since I am only on the questions mailing > list. I verified that the COPYRIGHT and lib directories DID have all the correct files. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 9 Jan 1998 14:05:07 -0600 (CST) From: "Jesse D.
