I don't know if this is a jdk-freebsd bug or a swingbug (I > haven't seen it then i tried it on a solaris machine). I suspect it's a swing-bug, since we see similar (sizing bugs) in Swing alot under all of the platforms. I suspect your problems are related to problems in -current, and not related to the JDK. I don't know if this is a jdk-freebsd bug or a swingbug (I > haven't seen it then i tried it on a solaris machine). You've hit the problem on the head! However, here's the weird part. If I use fvwm95 as my Window Manager (it's my default), the menu-drop-list is positioned *ABOVE* the menubar-entry; thus causing the problem above. If I switch to twm, it positions itself below the menubar-entry (as I'd expect it to), and everything works ok. Whoa. My contacts in JavaSoft tell me two things (confirming what I'd heard before I left there): 1) the Motif based Frame code is broken with a lot of window managers (so you might see the same kinds of problems on the Solaris JDK), and 2) JDK 1.1.6 is due out relatively soon, and that fixes for the Frame code have been a high priority. The FreeBSD-specific changes to the machine dependent parts of the code should be carried out before then, as they're likely to be applicable even to the new release. Absolutely! Without this hack, using fvwm2 window manager, the window would appear, jump off to some random location, and would resize itself to pretty much 0 width and smallish height. I admit to not having had the slightest idea what the code I disabled was attempting to do. It changed substantially between 1.1.4 and 1.1.5, and it is clear from the all the debug code left in there that whoever was making the changes was having some difficulties, and what was released probably works OK for MWM, but was totally broken for non-MWM. I just whacked at it until it stopped wreaking havoc, and went on to more important issues, like core dumps. It does cause initial window placement to be erratic -- windows place, then jump elsewhere. It just was never very high on the list of things to get 99% right. If someone wants to fix it, and has the time to test it against all the extant window managers, please do so. Hmm, I've seen that problem with the SWING stuff, but never with the stock JDK's off a SUN box. (I using fvwm1 on most of the SUN's, and olwm on the others.) > I admit to not having had the slightest idea what the code I disabled > was attempting to do. Interestingly enough, the stock SUN code seems to work fine for fvwm, so I'm not sure why it was changed for FreeBSD. (As have all previous versions.) > I just whacked at it until it stopped wreaking havoc, and went on to > more important issues, like core dumps. However, in the process of doing so, I ended up removing all of the licensing features. However, to IONA's credit, I was unable to get IDL working, since the compiler is a Solaris/Sparc executable. :) In JDK1.2-BETA2 (which is available from SUN now) there is IDLtoJAVA, along with what I believe to be all the necessary boilerplate to make it work, so you may be able to combine the two to make a working CORBA server. There are also CORBA servers available on the WWW for free, and I believe there is one in ports as well. > Second, does anyone have any good docs/URls that pertain to > load balancing client requests to a pool of CORBA-based servers? The java code below is designed to display key event codes. With the sun JDK 1.1.5 and 1.2beta, the keycodes for the numeric keypad change depending on the "numlock" status - this is junk considering "normal" keyboards don't have a numlock key. With the latest JDK port on FreeBSD 2.2.5 I get some interesting and confusing results using X with fvwm. When the keyboard is "standard", the numbers 1 to 9 on the numeric keypad don't register (ie. no interupt), all other KP keys work including both the minus and comma (which is different to sun). When I use xmodmap to tell X to use "Digital" style keys, PF1 -> PF4 and the comma keys stop working and the numbers (1 to 9) now give keycodes. In both cases the KPEnter and Return keys give the same code (10) and the Do, Help and some other function keys don't seem to work at all. Is there some way I can get a unique key code from every key on the keyboard no matter what X has been told? It works on my box at work (vncserver), but not at home. I compiled myself with the diffs from the 25th of February. I do not have these problems on the static Motif version. 1. Xserver crashes with SIGSEGV when I try to access the "about" box. There is a complaint: "Warning: Color name "g" is not defined" followed by "Xalloc warning: Xalloc(<0) ignored.." and then "Xalloc error: Header corrupt in Xfree() :-(" [sic] on my console. I'm sure this had a SIGIOT the first time it crashed, though. 2. Runtime crashes with SIGSEGV in "Image Animator" (sun.awt.image.GifFrame.dispose(GifImageDecoder.java:621)) when I access the "Tooltips" tab and run my cursor over the cow. 3. Runtime crashed with SIGSEGV in "TimerQueue" (com.sun.java.swing.Timer.post(Timer.java:270)) when I adjusted the pad amount to 10 in the "Buttons" tab. 4. Damon, Indeed. I want to focus on Java, not Motif. Damon then continued: ...and either they'll cut folks a deal, or funnel a bit back into the SMP/native-threads/multiple-threads-from-one-process-schedulable- -at-the-same-time effort so we can really get some perf? I don't understand what you're suggesting here; perhaps money spent on Motif for the Java effort at XiG can help the FreeBSD SMP effort? Good idea in practice, but I just want a UNIX-derived OS on which to build a reliable Java from source with debugging symbols. And maybe contribute a few bits and pieces while learning about the VM. o What is the Motif licensing arrangement? It's too bad we can't create a "libawtmotif.so" from source, link to, and then begin distributing that. Any creative but legally acceptable suggestions would be appreciated. But I'm not holding my breath! o Which Motif libraries should I buy? Do I have a choice? From http://www.xig.com/products/pricelst.html I can see that in the USA, I'd be paying $150. In later mail <199803040411.VAA06309@mt.sri.com>, Nate Williams writes: FWIW, as long as I'm building public releases, I will be using Motif, and will be building releases that don't require you to have Motif. If you want Motif for your own work, feel free to buy it. I *really* appreciate that, and I think a lot of other people will, too. But it doesn't help me to make tweaks to the sources and then use a source-level debugger, even if Nate compiles with debugging symbols. I think it's time for me to buy Motif for $149, go back to NT where the MKS toolkit is $395, or buy Solaris 2.5.1 x86 for around $500 :-) (Not that it would be impossible to build the JDK with the Cygnus tools on NT.) Once again, the work you all have done to get FreeBSD up and running with the latest Java is great. Thank you! Steve P.S. We might want to let the Lesstif people know about these problems in detail. This could be a real boost to them if they could fix the problems, and one of them might be willing to apply for the JDK source license and do it. Even if I give up on Lesstif for now, I admire the project and hope it goes well in the future! The use of LessTif was never something I wanted, since I'm aware that it's pretty buggy. If someone else is willing to send them the bugs, feel free, but for me I don't have the time nor the desire to do it. I've got enough other 'free software projects' to worry about. :) Nate To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-java" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-java Wed Mar 4 04:34:48 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id EAA26717 for freebsd-java-outgoing; Wed, 4 Mar 1998 04:34:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from gate.quick.com.au (gate.quick.com.au [203.12.250.130]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id EAA26710 for ; Wed, 4 Mar 1998 04:34:43 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from sjg@quick.com.au) Received: (from sjg@localhost) by gate.quick.com.au (8.8.8/8.7.3) id XAA21295; Wed, 4 Mar 1998 23:34:22 +1100 (EST) Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 23:34:22 +1100 (EST) From: "Simon J. Perhaps an even better approach would be to encourage Sun to ditch Motif altogether. The BISS dudes (kaffe) have shown that a 99% pure java AWT is doable and I've run the 1.0.2 version with no problems. Sun would do Java a great service to do as much of AWT in java as possible and not rely on anything more than Xt and the Win/* equivalent. Then they'd have a much more portable system and an incentive to do JIT :-) BTW, guys, thanks for the latest patches. My native NetBSD port is working nicely now (though I'm not forking out $12k+ for Motif licenses... :-) and having the FreeBSD port to compare against is a great help. XIG doesn't support 3.0. Heck, does XFree86 support 3.0? I wouldn't expect any commercial vendor to support a moving target like -current. I don't run it on any of my boxes that are for 'general' use, and I'm a developer. :) > I never could get Xsetup -graphics to work, only Xsetup -text. When bugs are found fixes take time to get integrated/tested and put into the tree. FreeBSD hasn't even fixed it yet. > I hope all the problems I had are because I don't want go back to > 2.2.1, but will not use neither Motif neither AccellX. Fine, but don't expect people to spend alot of time fixing something that is so broken (LessTif) when a working solution (Motif) exists. I have no interest in re-inventing something that works. Again, it's just not working. The libjava stuff is totally irrelevant, it just happens to be the first shlib loaded by the VM at startup time. Yes. As I mentioned to a previous query about this earlier this week, I ported IONA's OrbixWeb 3.0 to FreeBSD by hacking on their scripts. It's not complete (IDL doesn't work), but it does work. I can get away with not having IDL since I use my Solaris box to generate the IDL files, and then do all my development on FreeBSD. However, there are lots of free IDL/CORBA implementation out there, including a couple in ports. I think one of them even does Java. Also note that JDK1.2 ships with an IDL compiler, so you might be able to take the stuff out of there and use in the FreeBSD JDK. > If this info exists in a FAQ somewhere please point me to it, I am new to > the list. It's not publically available, but it was pretty easy to do. (I can't distribute it because I ended removing all of their licensing stuff, except for IDL.) Gerraty" To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: JVM bug or user error? Sender: owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org hi, I have been testing some awt behaviour in my native NetBSD jdk (uses lesstif), The reason I'm posting here is that the current FreeBSD JDK using Motif shows the same behaviour (bug?). Note that real apps so far have worked fine with the FreeBSD JDK on NetBSD. Since all my tests were run on a NetBSD-1.3 box I would appreciate it if someone could compile the app and run it on a FreeBSD system. Below is a simple test app which should throw up a username/passwd dialogue. It is hacked from modeFrame11.java from the Java AWT Reference book from O'Reilly & Assc. The changes made are simply to allow its behviour to be changed at runtime. Basically if you compile modeFrameL.java and run java modeFrameL this explicitly calls resize(250,125) and you get: getPreferredSize(): x=0, y=0 printed out, and a correctly sized popup window. If you run "java modeFrameL a", it skips resize() and calls pack(), you now get: getPreferredSize(): x=217, y=102 and a 2x2 sized popup! If you run "java modeFrameL a b", it does the resize() followed by pack() and you get: getPreferredSize(): x=217, y=102 and a reasonably sized popup. What is going on? It appears that getPreferredSize() returns 0x0 until pack() has been called. Which is interesting as one of the things that pack() does is setSize(getPreferredSize()). However once pack() has been called setSize() seems to have little/no effect - note that I force a size change before calling setSize() again. BTW I've fixed much of the lesstif lossage by simply setting awt.frame.*Inset=0 in the System properties (undoes a Motif specific hack in MFramePeer), this also stops dialogs from poping up with _huge_ windows - they now get tiny ones :-) I've been using the modeFrame app to trace under jdb and gdb to see what is going on. Anyway, like I said, the surprise was that in this case the FreeBSD JDK showed exactly? the same behaviour whereas for real apps dialogs etc are sized ok. --sjg // This example is from the book _Java AWT Reference_ by John Zukowski. // Written by John Zukowski. Is the popup window the one with the OK button in it, or the window that happens after you hit OK? In any case, I get the following behavior (which all seems to work), using the JDK I built that should be the same one that I stuck on FreeBSD's JDK WWW page for download. caddis:~/InCON/SRI/base/SIData % java modeFrameL getPreferredSize(): x=0, y=0 ^C caddis:~/InCON/SRI/base/SIData % java modeFrameL a getPreferredSize(): x=227, y=132 ^C caddis:~/InCON/SRI/base/SIData % java modeFrameL a b getPreferredSize(): x=227, y=132 ^C However, all of the frames have the exact same size (both the original username/password one and the subsequent frame that stays up afterwards.) > What is going on? It appears that getPreferredSize() returns 0x0 > until pack() has been called. Yep, this is 'expected' behavior unless you explicitly give the component a size. > Which is interesting as one of the > things that pack() does is setSize(getPreferredSize()). In a couple of our components that have varied size in out application, we must over-ride getPreferredSize() to contain the largest size the component will be, since if we don't then resizer endds up with potentially bogus sizing information which never gets redone. (I suppose we could call pack() everytime something changed, but that alot and we've got enough problems with repaint performance already.) > Anyway, like I said, the surprise was that in this case the FreeBSD > JDK showed exactly? the same behaviour whereas for real apps dialogs > etc are sized ok. I don't see the bug. I haven't looked more closely into it than to just run the program and check the results (I haven't analyzed it as well as you have above), but I'm merely sharing my results and experiences with this program and Java/AWT in general.
