Are there no entries above that for IRQ's? Anyhow, try replacing the "any" with 10, 11, 5 -- whatever (more or less)-- until you get something that works. Look at the dmesg output so you can be at least moderately sure that you are not specifying an IRQ that is already in use. Turns out that there seems to be a memory problem. If the machine has more than 64M of memory it will randomly hang. When this happens, nothing short of a hard-reset will unwedge the machine. Has anyone else seen a problem like this? If so, is there a workaround? Is this question more appropriate for the -current mailing list? I am running 2.2.6 plus KAME plus ALTQ plus CODA plus local hacks. After some lossage, I did the following and got it to work: In windows, changed IRQ setting to 11 (was 5). I presume this wrote to the hardware to change what it used, but this was fairly opaque. device pcm0 at isa? port 0x530 tty irq 11 drq 1 flags 0x0 vector pcmintr I found that with the irq and drq not filled in, the system crashed on accessing /dev/sound0. With it set to 5, which is what windows seemed to have had the hardware set to, sound worked but the pcmcia slot didn't ("driver allocation failed"). I then noticed that pcic0 was at irq5: pcm0 at 0x530 irq 11 drq 1 flags 0xa200 on isa mss_attach 0 at 0x530 irq 11 dma 1:1 flags 0xa200 PC-Card Intel 82365 (5 mem & 2 I/O windows) pcic: controller irq 5 I changed the config line to irq15, which seemed free. Then a pcmcia card worked and sound semiworked (sound out, but no interrupts apparently). Then, I tried changing the irq to 11, and all seems ok. (with 'cat file.ulaw > /dev/audio0'). I tried vat and got sorry don't know how to deal with this card Before I dig further, does anyone have clues? Does vat simply not have code for the new drivers, and should I try the voxware driver (as sb16, or mss, or what?)? If anyone could mail me a working kernel config line for the voxware driver for a Libretto, I'd appreciate it. It keeps crashing the kernel during the boot sequence on my server. I have a desktop PC with an ISA PCMCIA adapter controller card which has two PCMCIA modem cards plugged in. It was a Dual Pentium II motherboard, but until now, I only had one CPU. I have just added a 2nd Pentium II to my server and built a SMP kernel. But this new SMP kernel crashes during the boot sequence if I include the PCMCIA controller in my kernel config file. Without PCMCIA support, the machine boots fine with SMP support. Does anyone know anything about this? If someone is offering to help, I'll build a debug kernel and hook up a serial line to another FreeBSD machine and find the crash point. I've seen the same problem. Dual PII/266, Tyan Thunder-2, i365-clone PCMCIA adapter, 3.0-current ELF from about a month ago. I didn't have time to mess with it, so I just removed the adpater. The error is in build_freelist() in /sys/pccard/pcic.c It tries to ask the kernel which IRQs are free to be allocated to A) the PCMCIA controller board and B) the PCMCIA cards. This probe does not work correctly with SMP systems. It seems that on my hardware, the kernel Frees up some IRQs, giving these messages in my boot sequence. Freeing (NOT implemented) redirected ISA irq 11. Freeing (NOT implemented) redirected ISA irq 10. Freeing (NOT implemented) redirected ISA irq 9. Freeing (NOT implemented) redirected ISA irq 11. The IRQ probe scans IRQs from 1 to 15. When it gets to IRQ9 it causes a kernel panic, reporting a clash in the IRQ allocation. (I did not capture the exact error). Now IRQs 9,10 and 11 are what my BIOS assignes to my PCI cards and the SMP kernel does reasign these to IRQs 16 onwards in the magical APIC_IO way. So, I got around the crash by hacking the build_freelist() function to only scan from IRQ 1 to 7 and to ignore the rest. I also added my hack which prevents the controller allocating itself a IRQ too, but commenting some other code. So, it all seems to work. PCCARDD detects the two PCMCIA modems and gives me SIO2 and SIO3. I plugged in my two phones and dialed from one to the other and it all worked just great. So, the proper fix is for the build_freelist to be changed to probe correctly under SMP. Who do we need to hastle in the SMP development team. Need more detailed error messages from your failure. The line: Freeing (NOT implemented) redirected ISA irq 9. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ implies that the SMP kernel did direct IRQ9 thru the APIC. The "NOT implimented" part is a reminder that the ISA section has not been reprogrammed to allow use of IRQ 9 by cards on the ISA bus. (didn't) have time to figure out how when I wrote that code...). So the problem is in this code: /* See if the IRQ is free. */ if (register_intr(irq, 0, 0, nullfunc, NULL, irq) == 0) { /* Give it back, but add it to the mask */ INTRMASK(freemask, mask); unregister_intr(irq, nullfunc); } Since the SMP kernel actually registered an INT from 16 up, but didn't unhook IRQ9 from the bus, nor register it, it looks like its free, when it really isn't. Its been a long time since I was in this code, so I'm not sure of what the cure should be. Would be nice if someone could find time to impliment the "freeing of ISA INT paths" for this situation, but I don't think this would fix this problem. It appears (need the exact error message!) that it is a programmed panic, based on some perceived allocation problem, but I have no idea where without seeing the error message. (note that I used an older SNAP for source to discuss this issue, could be the panic is coming from the current version of this function, but that I am not up to date.) -- Steve Passe | powered by smp@csn.net | Symmetric MultiProcessor FreeBSD To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Fri Dec 11 11:08:14 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id LAA13209 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 11:08:14 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from roma.coe.ufrj.br (roma.coe.ufrj.br [146.164.53.65]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id LAA13148 for ; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 11:08:03 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jonny@jonny.eng.br) Received: (from jonny@localhost) by roma.coe.ufrj.br (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA12645; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 17:06:06 -0200 (EDT) (envelope-from jonny) From: Joao Carlos Mendes Luis Message-Id: <199812111906.RAA12645@roma.coe.ufrj.br> Subject: Re: Libretto Sound In-Reply-To: from Greg Troxel at "Dec 9, 98 03:59:22 pm" To: gdt@fnord.ir.bbn.com (Greg Troxel) Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 17:06:06 -0200 (EDT) Cc: imp@village.org, mobile@FreeBSD.ORG X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL40 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org #define quoting(Greg Troxel) // I tried vat and got // // sorry don't know how to deal with this card // // Before I dig further, does anyone have clues? Anyone can understand this because there are real world examples of (non i386) computers that drop into a monitor upon halt. No argument there. FreeBSD is (ideally) independent of specific architectures/hardware. Therefore, to be consistent and non-hardware-specific FreeBSD should support both -h and -p. Now in the subcase that you're running FreeBSD on i386 with no monitor ROM, then I don't what's wrong with making '-h' and '-p' degenerate, ie, they both do the same thing: halt the system and cause a power off. -Archie ___________________________________________________________________________ Archie Cobbs * Whistle Communications, Inc. * http://www.whistle.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Fri Dec 11 12:01:05 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id MAA19922 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 12:01:05 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from fnord.ir.bbn.com (FNORD.IR.BBN.COM [192.1.100.210]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id MAA19916 for ; Fri, 11 Dec 1998 12:01:03 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gdt@fnord.ir.bbn.com) Message-Id: <199812112001.MAA19916@hub.freebsd.org> Received: (qmail 10396 invoked from network); 11 Dec 1998 20:00:54 -0000 Received: from localhost.bbn.com (HELO fnord.ir.bbn.com) (127.0.0.1) by localhost.bbn.com with SMTP; 11 Dec 1998 20:00:54 -0000 From: Greg Troxel To: Joao Carlos Mendes Luis cc: imp@village.org, mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Libretto Sound In-reply-to: Your message of "Fri, 11 Dec 1998 17:06:06 -0200." <199812111906.RAA12645@roma.coe.ufrj.br> Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 15:00:54 -0500 Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I am using the vat package. The problem, I think, after some code perusing, is that it chokes in the case of a pcm device that can't do full duplex. The libretto 70 can't, both because I don't have a second drq configured, but also because it has no mic or line in. So I would think vat should fall back to listen-only mode gracefully. vat (again the package) did this ok on another box, with voxware and gus0 (apparently not configed right for full duplex; no second drq). It is also the optional floppy in other parts of the world for the entire Libretto line. >From LINT: # FDC_YE enables support for the floppies used on the Libretto. This is a # pcmcia floppy. I'm unable to test on a machine that has both a floppy drive as well as a pcmcia slot at this time, so I kept it an option, per the orgininal code. Many thanks to David Horwitt (dhorwitt@ucsd.edu) who did the original work for -stable aided in part by the Linux floppy driver from David Bateman (dbateman@eng.uts.edu.au). Is it actually PnP configurable? My bet (if it's embedded) is that you can read the settings out of it, but won't be able to write them back. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Sat Dec 12 17:46:12 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA25098 for freebsd-mobile-outgoing; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 17:46:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from send203.yahoomail.com (send203.yahoomail.com [205.180.60.155]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id RAA25092 for ; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 17:46:11 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from edwardsweeney@yahoo.com) Message-ID: <19981213015014.24788.rocketmail@send203.yahoomail.com> Received: from [38.30.238.54] by send203.yahoomail.com; Sat, 12 Dec 1998 17:50:14 PST Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 17:50:14 -0800 (PST) From: Ed Sweeney Subject: Re: PCMCIA Dacom PSION modem To: Gary Palmer Cc: freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org ---Gary Palmer wrote: > > Ed Sweeney wrote in message ID > <19981212215520.17276.rocketmail@send206.yahoomail.com>: > > I've seen messages in the archive stating PSION Gold Card works but I > > have not had success myself yet. > > > > Anyone with PCCARD.conf and kernel info? I ditched the CardBus ethernet card that came with it already for a supported one. Thanks for the pccard.conf data. I'm still not there yet. When I have the card0, pcic0, and pcic1 in the kernel, the machine locks during boot unless I have the bios config PNP enabled. With PNP enabled, pccardd says: pccardd[287]: fatal error: no PC-CARD slots Any more thoughts would be appreciated, thanks -Ed == ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ed Sweeney, Fairfax, VA mailto:edwardsweeney@yahoo.com _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
