Let me guess; you're still insanely busy? 8) I've been poking a little at this Intel 450NX-based system we have here, trying to get some sort of handle on why we only see one of the three PCI busses on the system. Following are the relevant verbose boot and mptable output. Any ideas? >From the 450NX chipset documentation it almost looks as though there are three separate PCI busses off the host bus, rather than being bridged off each other; they make mention of one bus being in "compatibility" mode. Expander Bridges. Are there actually any PCI cards in either of the other two busses (32-bit and 64-bit PCI bus)? I have seen this before, with the AMI BIOS, where the BIOS does not configure PCI-PCI bridges if there is nothing on the other side of the PCI bridge (or nothing but a PCI-PCI bridge, with nothing on the other side of that). This (empty PCI busses) would also make sense, given that there are no interrupt mappings in the MP table for the other PCI busses. Can you plug in a couple extra cards (at least one in each of the other two busses) and try it again? If it still doesn't work, I'll be glad to look at it, but my guess is that the multiple host-PCI bridges are implemented similarly to the 450GX chipset, and AGP in the 440BX, so it will "just work" once the BIOS configures the bridges. There wasn't when I booted it last, but I just bounced it again with a DC21041 on each of the other busses, and the result (we only probe one bus) is the same. There's an extra entry in the MP table though, showing a device on bus 1. Nothing on bus 2, perhaps that's because it's only a 32-bit card in a 64-bit slot? > I have seen this before, with the AMI BIOS, where the BIOS does not > configure PCI-PCI bridges if there is nothing on the other side > of the PCI bridge (or nothing but a PCI-PCI bridge, with nothing > on the other side of that). Well, the cards are in there, and we're still not probing them. What next? 8) If you like, I can arrange login access to the system if that'd be handy, or come Monday I'd be more than happy to patch the system and generally be your fingers here. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-smp" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-smp Sat Sep 19 05:14:44 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id FAA29711 for freebsd-smp-outgoing; Sat, 19 Sep 1998 05:14:44 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-smp@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za (zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za [146.64.24.58]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id FAA29693 for ; Sat, 19 Sep 1998 05:14:39 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jhay@zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za) Received: (from jhay@localhost) by zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za (8.9.1/8.9.1) id OAA25265 for smp@freebsd.org; Sat, 19 Sep 1998 14:14:13 +0200 (SAT) From: John Hay Message-Id: <199809191214.OAA25265@zibbi.mikom.csir.co.za> Subject: Only 50% idle with current -current? I have always had good success with the ASUS line. I have a p2l97-ds with 333mHz PIIs that runs quite well with the May SNAP. I am about to bring up a p2b-ds with 450mHz PIIs soon, stay tuned. -- Steve Passe | powered by smp@csn.net | Symmetric MultiProcessor FreeBSD To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-smp" in the body of the message
