This computer has a built-in network adapter that is identified by BIOS/Setup as either an AMD Ethernet card or an Integrated NetFlex-L ENET. Booting with the generic install kernel, I discovered that the card was detected as lnc1. This seemed to work all right, except for frequent heart beat errors (SQE test failed). Heres the detection from the logs: lnc1 rev 2 int a irq 10 on pci0:11:0 lnc1: PCnet-32 VL-Bus address 00:80:5f:c2:71:88 To see if this could be allieviated, and if the tl driver would work any better (or at all), I updated the kernel sources, and compiled and installed a new kernel with the necessary rc.conf changes... This didn't work. So now I tried returning to the old driver with the new sources. This only gave me this at boot: lnc1 rev 2 int a irq 10 on pci0:11:0 It seems as if the card is not recognized properly anymore. Just to be sure that this is software related, I've tried an old kernel, which worked fine. The card vendor id is 0x1022, device id is 0x2000, and it has revision 0x2. Anyone? Thanks in advance. This weekend I ran cvsupit to get my initial cvs refresh from 2.2.7-Release to 2.2.7-Stable. So far I have run make buildworld Do I need to run make installworld next, or can I rebuild my kernel next? I was kinda hoping to build everything, then install everything, but it was not real clear to me if the kernel would get built correctly if I did not do the installworld first. Next, since I boot my machine via floppy, where will I find the components for that? Will it be a single disk image file like the one found on the CD, or will it be individual files? Finally, I will need to clean up the objects after this is done. I assume that a simple make clean will do the job. For another test case, my machine, which is a very recent 2.2-stable, P90, takes over 35 CPU minutes to compile gilt.cc (part of the amulet UI environment). Is C++ compilation always this slow? (gilt.cc is 2048 lines, I still need to add up all the lines from the include files) The machine was unloaded at the time, and has 40mb RAM. Build the kernel next. Then, go into single user mode and do a make installworld, followed by a "cd /sys/compile/MYKERNEL;make install". It's best to script the building, it makes it a lot easier. Otherwise you run the risk of using a config program that isn't correct for the kernel you're building. > > It's best to script the building, it makes it a lot easier. > > You may also like to read Nik Claytons tutorial on building the world. > Have a look at . >From this very document: You should build your new kernel after you have completed make world (or make installworld). If you do not want to do this (perhaps you want to confirm that the kernel builds before updating your system) you may have problems. These may be because your config command is out of date with respect to your kernel sources. In this case you could run # /usr/obj/usr/src/usr.sbin/config KERNELNAME to build your kernel with the new version of config. This may not work in all cases. It is recommended that you complete make world (or make installworld) before compiling a new kernel. Never build the kernel before installing the world. You might be using an out of date /usr/sbin/config in which case the kernel wont compile at all. There is also no reason to boot into single user mode to install the world unless it is a major upgrade such as from 2.2.7-3.0. This is a simple and routine upgrade. Just make world and then compile your kernel. Reboot the system for the kernel change to take effect. The make world changes take effect as soon as the make world is completed. -Don To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Mon Nov 23 13:53:56 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id NAA22566 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Mon, 23 Nov 1998 13:53:56 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from hyperreal.org (taz.hyperreal.org [209.133.83.16]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id NAA22558 for ; Mon, 23 Nov 1998 13:53:54 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from brian@hyperreal.org) Received: (qmail 20441 invoked by uid 24); 23 Nov 1998 21:53:54 -0000 Message-Id: <4.1.19981123134837.00a33d50@hyperreal.org> X-Sender: brian@hyperreal.org X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.1 Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 13:55:13 -0800 To: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG From: Brian Behlendorf Subject: xl0: no memory for rx list -- packet dropped Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Any idea what kernel parameter I should adjust to address the above error message? Who said anything about rebooting before compiling and installing a new kernel. > Seperating the builds also means that it is harder to script together. I dont know about you but I fail to see where one needs to script the command "make world" - As for kernel compiles I have found that it is a much better idea not to script this stuff. I use to do have scripts to do all of this but since I started running 3.0 on a few boxes the scripts were failing often enough that I realized I should be paying more attention to what was happening when these commands execute. > > There is also no reason to boot into single user mode to install the > > world unless it is a major upgrade such as from 2.2.7-3.0. > > I prefer to make installworld in single user mode to avoid clobbering > daemons executable files. To my mind "it's just safer". I dont really see any difference here. As soon as the install is done the daemons that get started afterward run using the newer versions. besides which I always reboot after the kernel compile which is just a few minutes later anyway. In the end it comes down to personal preference. I have had kernel compiles die often enough because of an out of date config that I wont compile a new kernel without a new userland first. What good does a script do if you have an out of date config? you still have to manually make a new config and that defeats the ease of the scripting in the first place. The whole idea of scripting all of this stuff is fine provided you pay propper attention to the output of those scripts. I find it is simply eaiser to execute the commands and watch them. As for scripting being harder if build and install arent done seperately .... I fail to see why. In fact, one really shouldnt put the kernel compile and the userland compile into one script. When things fail for whatever reason you dont want 10 other commands executing anyway. This is just an opinion and I am sure 100 other people have 100 other opinions :) -Don To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Tue Nov 24 16:27:27 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA00221 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Tue, 24 Nov 1998 16:27:27 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from varmail.net (varmail.net [203.46.50.11] (may be forged)) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id QAA29525; Tue, 24 Nov 1998 16:24:44 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from offer@varmail.net) Received: from localhost (root@localhost) by varmail.net (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id KAA08558; Wed, 25 Nov 1998 10:22:43 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from offer@varmail.net) Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 10:22:43 +1000 (EST) Received: by varmail.net (bulk_mailer v1.11); Wed, 25 Nov 1998 02:07:25 +1000 From: melanie@varmail.net To: members@wetmelanie.com Subject: A Great Selection of FREE Adult Sites! Searched the archives, nothing like it listed My system is a PII single board computer, NFS mounting most of its data from a NetBSD machine. The server is running apache, and a linux banner ad server. What could be causing this error? This error makes me abit paranoid, it went several month without a hitch then in the past month, it hung twice. Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Also, is it a better idea to run -STABLE tha -RELEASE??? -J To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Tue Nov 24 18:35:06 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id SAA13514 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Tue, 24 Nov 1998 18:35:06 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from calis.BlackSun.org (slip-ppp-4-191.escape.com [205.160.46.191]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id SAA13507 for ; Tue, 24 Nov 1998 18:35:02 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from don@calis.BlackSun.org) Received: from localhost (don@localhost) by calis.BlackSun.org (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id VAA51788; Tue, 24 Nov 1998 21:35:16 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from don@calis.BlackSun.org) Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 21:35:16 -0500 (EST) From: Don To: "Matthew D. Grr. I didn't notice this when testing (but it's there in the log). This is the NFS accelerator stuff bloating the nfsnode (it's fully packed out already). Please do; the issue is that if an NFS file handle larger than NFS_SMALLFH is returned there is alternative code which needs to manage the handle. If you can try reducing NFS_SMALLFH to 56 in sys/nfs/nfsproto.h and do some NFS testing against a server in v3 mode, that would be appreciated. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Thu Nov 26 07:47:25 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id HAA09192 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Thu, 26 Nov 1998 07:47:25 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (castles216.castles.com [208.214.165.216]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id HAA09186 for ; Thu, 26 Nov 1998 07:47:23 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Received: from dingo.cdrom.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by dingo.cdrom.com (8.9.1/8.8.8) with ESMTP id HAA03794; Thu, 26 Nov 1998 07:45:50 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from mike@dingo.cdrom.com) Message-Id: <199811261545.HAA03794@dingo.cdrom.com> X-Mailer: exmh version 2.0.2 2/24/98 To: talon@lpthe.jussieu.fr (Michel TALON) cc: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Problem compiling stable release In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 26 Nov 1998 16:39:03 +0100." <199811261539.QAA24216@niobe.lpthe.jussieu.fr> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998 07:45:50 -0800 From: Mike Smith Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG > Having cvsuped stable on a machine running 2.2.5 i have > performed make -j 4 buildworld, which almost succeeded, but > halted near the end complaining with a lot of doubly defined variables > in /usr/src/lkm/cd9660. Everything built ok, and the machine booted ok. Very nice indeed. One small problem, though: The build of the /stand directory toold (sysinstall) failed. The problem seems to be that sysinstall.h includes "version.h", which is not available. I simply commented the include line out, and the program built successfully. So, is my "version.h" mysteriously missing, or should it really be gone? BTW, if someone could tell me (or point me to the relevant docs) how to interpret the cvsup log files, I would appreciate it. Can they be used to determine what files changed during the cvsup?
