How do you suggest building a sendmail config with RBL and other random features? I found the 3.0 "extras" in /etc/mail and their associated install docs to be a bit out of sync with the actual files (admittedly this was 3.0-BETA, the day before -RELEASE came out). But I was at a loss for the "proper" way to create an .mc and turn it into a .cf -- short of downloading and building sendmail outside the /usr/src or /usr/ports tree. You will be back in business. Sorry, I had forgotten that the NO_SENDMAIL option in /etc/make.conf was a 3.0-only feature (with which sendmail can be easily turned off so that this doesn't happen). You will indeed need to do things as David suggests (or put a post-world target in /etc/make.conf which installs the other sendmail - that works for both 2.2.x and 3.x). - Jordan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-stable Tue Dec 29 16:56:36 1998 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id QAA07720 for freebsd-stable-outgoing; Tue, 29 Dec 1998 16:56:36 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from megaweapon.zigg.com (megaweapon.zigg.com [206.114.60.8]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id QAA07566 for ; Tue, 29 Dec 1998 16:56:33 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from matt@zigg.com) Received: from localhost (matt@localhost) by megaweapon.zigg.com (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id TAA04697; Tue, 29 Dec 1998 19:56:08 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from matt@zigg.com) Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 19:56:07 -0500 (EST) From: Matt Behrens To: Chris Shenton cc: freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Sendmail Anti-SPAM stuff In-Reply-To: <86ww3aczts.fsf@samizdat.uucom.com> Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG (trimmed slightly, I bet postmaster already knows this) ;) On 29 Dec 1998, Chris Shenton wrote: : I know how to make .mc's and turn 'em into .cf's. I know this has been discussed several times, CAM won*%t make it into 2.2.x. But know I*%m bitten myself with this. I want to build up a new high performance server. Ideal would be an adaptec board called P2B-SL, which contains an AIC 7890 amd an Intel 82558. The on board ethernet chip is supported by FreeBSD-STABLE I found in the mailinglist archive. The AIC chip is only supported by CAM. Is there any possibility, to get a 2.2.8 system running with these components, or could we agree, that a 2.2.9 with CAM would be worth as last super stable FreeBSD system in the 2.2.X line ? Or does somebody provide a CAM boot floppy, to get a FreeBSD system installed and are there CAM patches for 2.2.8 (-STABLE) to patch the kernel after installation ??? I have three machines running 3.0-RELEASE with an ASUS P2B-S (the one with the SCSI chip onboard but unfortunately without Ethernet as we had difficulties to get them). Those three machines have a similar configuration: P2B-S with P-II/350, 256 meg RAM, 4,3 GB IBM DCAS UW disk. Two are desktop machines, the third is planned as a server machine. Unfortunately, mine is the only yet really used as our new employee starts to work in January and there was no time (and no need yet) to use the server heavily. Mine runs XFree86 3.3.3, KDE, XFMail, KNews, Netscape Communicator 4.07, a bunch of xterms, ssh, pgp, ghostscript, ghostview, Acrobat Reader and many more useful utilities. Currently, the programs running use about 160 meg RAM without any swap space in use. Maybe 256 meg is a somewhat large amount for a desktop machine :-) I have also tried a version of ApplixWare and StarOffice 3.0 and they worked fine. It run's flawlessly for 14 days no, the machine planned as a server is doing almost nothing (except a name server and some NFS I/O) and runs for 13 days now. The third machine is powered off, but has been running for a week fine. The base install was done from CD-ROM, the additional programs were installed by compiling them with a cvsup'ed current ports collection (I took most of the distfiles from the CD-ROM, of course). This took some time, but worked also without any problems. I can't say anything about constant heavy load, but the daily work runs fine on my machine. That what is called -CURRENT coming from the FreeBSD developers is usually significant more stable than what is called "release" from other well-known companies... () Is there any possibility, to get a 2.2.8 system running with these components, () or could we agree, that a 2.2.9 with CAM would be worth as last super stable () FreeBSD system in the 2.2.X line ? How about that, I decided to take a closer look at ftp.freebsd.org: >From /pub/FreeBSD/development/cam/README: "How do I install it?" Full release distribution sets for both 3.0-current and 2.2-stable systems are provided shortly after snapshots are released. The release distributions will be available at: ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/cam/ In the 2.2CAM-..-SNAP directory below there is also a boot.flp image, and a full distribution! :-) () Or does somebody provide a CAM boot floppy, to get a FreeBSD system () installed and are there CAM patches for 2.2.8 (-STABLE) to patch the kernel () after installation ??? Without thinking to long about it (I'm spending some time as holiday at home now :-) ), I would suggest the following way: - Get the CAM boot.flp image from a FreeBSD ftp mirror near to you - Bring the machine up, boot the floppy, and run a minimum (or custom) install via ftp. This may take some time, but works. (I did something similar with a 2.2.8 one or two weeks ago, and I let it work over night.) - Install a -current ports collection and build the applications you need. () I have to build the system in mid of January, that is the timeframe .... I chose a 3.0-RELEASE because I needed CAM, and I wanted to have those machines starting with a clean installation running ELF binaries. If you don't need that, I would start with 2.2CAM as described above. That may cause some heavy net load (installing from ftp), but for one single machine it will be the easiest way, I think. I've had them running on my 2.2.8 desktop system at work for about a month. There is a catch however. They do not apply to the 2.2.8 source cleanly, requiring some manual editing of about 3 or 4 source files. IIRC, the files that had problems were a couple of Makefiles, mt.c, and another file. Once applied, they compiled cleanly and have run flawlessly for the past month. Prior to that the CAM patches ran flawlessly on a 2.2.7 and 2.2.6 system (same hardware). Speaking of make.conf knobs (which we weren't, but this is close enough that I can call it a continuation thread), how hard would it be to put some way for an 'exclude' list, instead of discrete NO_PERL and NO_SENDMAIL and NO_FOOTMASSAGE options? i.e., 'don't build usr.bin/w and sbin/ping and usr.sbin/lpc', because we're running hacked versions, etc? named is another that springs to mind. Sure, on our -STABLE machines, running BIND8, I installed it in /usr/local/sbin so it doesn't get clobbered, but that was after I clobbered it three times *blush* Hey! Get your finger away from that 'Your patches?' key! I'm no 'make' guru, I wouldn't know where to start on something like that. Well, I've been debating whether to bring up the issue of doing a couple of "final" major updates to certain components. In particular: - sendmail 8.9.1(a) - bind 8.1.2 - ipfw forward (transparent proxy support for ipfw). On one hand, sendmail and bind8 are pretty much expected for line-of-fire systems, and their import won't mess up a subsequent official release. It will make life a bit easier for folks trying to use 2.2 systems in this role as they will stop having to fight with the build mechanism over which sendmail/bind it uses. On the other, it messes up people tracking 2.2-stable just for minor bug fixes and probably wouldn't appreciate arriving at work in the morning and discovering they've now got to reconfigure sendmail and bind and that ipfw now gives parameter size errors. I'd say gofer it. I for one have *NO* plans on upgrading any mission-critical boxes to 3.0, simply because I'm not convinced it's got enough milage under it, so I'm sticking with 2.2. It's nicer to have things 'officially', plus it's trivial to not do a 'make world' to upgrade if you don't want to mess with all of the new features, and instead take them piecemeal. Hi Matthew, I spent in excess of 40 person hours working on a scripted solution to this, which I called localmods. It kept its own directory of local source and ports tree hacks, and applied them after CVSup runs. It turned out to be a huge waste of time because my guru pointed out something very elegant called CVS, which I've been sold on ever since and makes any such solution _completely_ unnecessary. I assume you're using CVSup. It's a great tool, but the assumption is that you don't make local changes to your copy of the source tree. If you do, CVSup blatts them. This is a design feature. When you have a little free time, look at the CVS info(1) page. Using CVS, you'll be able to update your source tree without blowing away local changes to the source tree. That means that, for example, you can remove sendmail from the usr.sbin Makefile once and it'll never build on your box again. :-) Also useful in this regard is the mergemaster port, which allows you to update /etc without blowing away your local changes to those files. :) I can't remember how I survived without CVS and the mergemaster port. Ciao, Sheldon. I use CVSup to maintain a local copy of the FreeBSD CVS repository, and use CVS to handle my source/ports/etc. I also use CVS for several of my own projects. But in this case, CVS is slightly less than perfect. For one thing, we have several different machines with different configs here. It's not uncommon at all that I wipe /usr/src clean (/usr/src and /usr/obj have their own partitions, thank god), so for any of this to be of any practical use, I'd need to import my own changes onto a seperate branch, which lends itself to some fairly severe ugliness there. I supposed I could create a seperate 'local' module, and check it out OVER the src module, and try to keep it up with any/all changes, etc. Or I could branch at some arbitrary point back in the tree in the files I'm interested in with a LOCAL symbolic tag on the branch, but I'm not sure what CVSup would do to that; whether it would wipe my local changes when there's a change to the master RCS file in question, or keep them, or create some god-awful mess by mixing the two. I'm not horribly fond of either solution. I'd think there should be some way to generalize that nicely in a make.conf knob; that also makes it so it's automatic that each machine is configured right for any/all local changes on it (I NFS mount /usr/src and /usr/obj from my build machine to each machine, and do a make installworld; takes about 15 minutes, not too shabby), since each machine would reference it's local /etc/make.conf, and 'exclude' X, Y, and Z from the install process. See at your address and netmask : they say that your network is 192.30.2.0 and your boradcast address is 192.30.2.255 . Only machine that have IP address from 192.30.2.1 to 192.30.2.254 can talk between them. You need to configure an internetwork interface to belong to 205 network and configure your machine as a gateway On the other hand you can configure router as gateway or configure router to do NAT (Network Address Translation) . I must admit, if all you want to do is be able to blow away your local src copy without losing your local hacks, just do ``cvs -q diff -uRN'' and save the output somewhere safe before you do the blow-away. When you re-checkout, just do a ``patch < saved.diff'' to bring back your local hacks. :-) I've never created my own local branching or anything that messy, since cvs update handles my local modifications quite gracefully. Anyway, this could easily ramble off the list charter. I'd suggest any responses move to -chat. Ciao, Sheldon. Upgrading sendmail would be fine. :) Personally, I'm not too worried about upgrading the products themselves, as we have ports for that if need be. I *WOULD* like to see a NO_SENDMAIL option for make world though. This would help for existing systems running qmail or other assorted mail hacks. (Or even if one was using the sendmail port) (NO_PERL was have. NO_SENDMAIL definitely, and perhaps NO_BIND, though our current DNS servers run fine with the bind8 port without make world messing up the setup) Jaime Bozza Nucleus Communications, Inc. Ditto. I'm about to install -STABLE on a new server here, but I could put it off if these are going to be added soon. I'd rather have the latest sendmail/BIND already there. Something about it already being in the tree rather than having to install it as a port gives me warm fuzzies. If you need the newer features of 3.0, it might not be a bad idea to use that, since 3.0-STABLE is supposed to come out in a few weeks. Upgrading from 3.0-CURRENT or 3.0-RELEASE to 3.0-STABLE should be alot easier than going from 2.2.8-STABLE to 3.0-STABLE. Send mail to mime@docserver.cac.washington.edu for more info. --0-1220649514-915060876=:221 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Recently, I purchased a Zip plus, intending to hang it off an Adaptec 1540 SCSI adapter I had laying around. However, much to my dismay, after re-adding aha support to my kernel, I got the following errors on all subsequent SCSI bus reprobes: aha0: DMA beyond end Of ISA: 0x748bf2c (note, this address would change on every probe) I seem to recall having this very same problem when I had initially installed this adapter as my primary SCSI bus, before upgrading to a 2940. IIRC, adding the kernel configuration option: options BOUNCE_BUFFERS cleared up the error. However, this time around, I do indeed still have that directive in my configuration file, yet I still observe these errors. I began searching the mail archives, and found several other similar instances where users alleged that they had the aforementioned option specified in a kernel built for an aha, and still observed similar errors. I could not, however, find any correspondence suggesting a definitive cause or resolution. Some blundering kernel source searches showed me that I know absolutely nothing about how FreeBSD handles ISA DMA transfers, save that the kernel traps them, and copies the specific data to an address outside of the ISA address range (> 16 Meg?) for subsequent access by the process requesting said information. Also, /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/aha1542.c has the line: aha->flags = SDEV_BOUNCE; directly after this I added the line: printf ("aha%d: Enabling bounce buffers\n",aha->unit); which then showed up in the kernel device probe at boot time. Here I was just convincing myself that this buffer support was indeed being enabled, as there were quite a few preprocessor directives surrounding said code. Later, it seems that the flag is actually being referenced. For instance, in /usr/src/sys/scsi/sd.c: /* * Use a bounce buffer if necessary */ #ifdef BOUNCE_BUFFERS if (sc_link->flags & SDEV_BOUNCE) vm_bounce_alloc(bp); #endif My kernel compile directory (/usr/src/sys/compile/mynofw) has the file opt_bounce.h that consists of a single line: #define BOUNCE_BUFFERS 1 One is inclined to suspect, then, that I properly specified that bounce buffers should be used, and indeed the kernel compiled in code to support them. Has anyone noticed any similar problems with their 154x devices? Perhaps similar problems with their bt, wd7000 or ultra14 devices (which also have similar SDEV_BOUNCE flags set) How about news that your 154x is working perfectly on a machine with more then 16 megs? Is it your first bus? (scbus0?). What's _your_ kernel config file look like? I am currently using: 2.2.8-STABLE, compiled on Mon Dec 28 19:40:50 EST 1998 from a 'supped tree updated that day, on an ASUS T2P4 with 128 Megs of RAM. We already have a port of BIND 8, make a port of sendmail and the people who want/need this are set. > - ipfw forward (transparent proxy support for ipfw). If it doesn't break existing setups, fine. If it does, no way. 2.2-Stable should be left in its current state except for bug fixes, and efforts should go into making 3.whateverthehell stable enough to use in production. Nickel and diming 2.2-Stable will just lead to a lot of headaches. Doug To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message
