All you need is in this file, even the README for installing PAO :-). For example, if you have installed FreeeBSD 2.2.8 sources under /usr/src: cd /usr/src; tar xvzf "packages directory"/PAO-19981225.tar.gz # THE file! Look for instructions in PAO/release/README (the PAO/release/Makefile will do 90% of the work for you). -- Robert Brive To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Sun Feb 14 07:17:13 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id HAA05085 for freebsd-doc-outgoing; Sun, 14 Feb 1999 07:17:13 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from imul.com (imul.com [207.230.129.2]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id HAA05075 for ; Sun, 14 Feb 1999 07:16:54 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ernestb@infocom.co.ug) Received: from infocom.co.ug (tech-sup2.imul.com [207.230.129.29]) by imul.com (8.8.7/8.8.7) with ESMTP id SAA15602; Sun, 14 Feb 1999 18:16:22 +0300 (GMT+0300) Message-ID: <36D78EF2.AB6912F@infocom.co.ug> Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 18:21:38 +3600 From: Byaruhanga Ernest Reply-To: Byaruhanga@imul.com, Ernest@imul.com Organization: Infocom Uganda X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (Win95; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Request for documentation Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I would like to know how to acquire documentation on a topic. It has both the html version which is viewable at www.realtime.net/sculpture (follow the FreeBSD links) and my first attempt at sgml. The sgml document actually produces readable htm files! (suprised me!) They seem a bit busy though. I'll try to work on this in my "spare time" (hysterical laughter...). The html version has been up for a while and several people have used it without causing any fires or such. It's kind of a "how to" based on my own experiences, Hal Stern's book, the man pages, and other's input from -questions. The html version has a pointer to Ted Wisniewski's tutorial but the sgml version lacks this. It really should be folded in to create a more robust document. I have added a NOCVS variable, which tries to build the Web site from other data if the CVS tree is not present. The patch below allows the English version of the Web site to be built without a CVS repository. Similar patches could be applied to other langauges' build processes. I cannot think of any negative side-effects introduced with this change. It will allow people to build a copy of the Web site with stale information from /usr/ports, but this is already possible if a stale CVS repository is used. >How-To-Repeat: >Fix: --- en/copyright/Makefile.orig Sat Oct 17 11:18:42 1998 +++ en/copyright/Makefile Sun Feb 14 18:00:47 1999 @@ -16,7 +16,12 @@ # FreeBSD Ports redistribution restrictions LEGAL= LEGAL CLEANFILES+= ${LEGAL} +.if defined(NOCVS) +${LEGAL}: $${PORTSBASE}/ports/LEGAL + cp ${PORTSBASE}/ports/LEGAL LEGAL +.else ${LEGAL}: $${CVSROOT}/ports/LEGAL,v co -q -p ${.ALLSRC} > ${.TARGET} +.endif .include "../web.mk" --- en/ports/Makefile.orig Wed Sep 2 20:07:44 1998 +++ en/ports/Makefile Sun Feb 14 18:01:10 1999 @@ -18,14 +18,23 @@ cvsindex= $${CVSROOT}/${PINDEX},v _ALLINSTALL= packages.exists ${INDEX} +.if defined(NOCVS) +${INDEX}: $${PORTSBASE}/${PINDEX} + cp ${PORTSBASE}/${PINDEX} ${INDEX} +.else ${INDEX}: ${cvsindex} cvs -QR co -p ${PINDEX} > ${INDEX} +.endif # build the list of available packages only on the # main FreeBSD machines hostname!= hostname +.if defined(NOCVS) +packages.exists: +.else packages.exists: ${cvsindex} +.endif .if ${hostname} == "hub.freebsd.org" || ${hostname} == "freefall.freebsd.org" sh ${.CURDIR}/packages > ${.TARGET} .else --- en/web.mk.orig Sun Oct 4 14:25:30 1998 +++ en/web.mk Sun Feb 14 17:55:21 1999 @@ -43,6 +43,11 @@ COPY= -C +# +# Where the ports live, if CVS isn't used (ie. Dymocks, for example, reckons that they've never been approached > by Walnut Creek and won't stock their stuff until that happens (but > Dymocks could be mistaken, and that happens frequently). personally i'd rather deal with the likes of leonard chan than some nameless megalithic morons like dymocks as an aside cetustech has far better prices that dymocks or any of the other so called 'discount booksellers'. i suppose because leonard is just a small fish companies like walnut creek tend to over look the cetustechs of this world .. but then again this isn.t mainland america so what can we freebsd users really expect, espcially those of us without creditcard facilities. please i'm not taking pot shots at sintly walnut creek, god forbid, but a little more 'concideration; could be shown to the far flung reches of teh freebsd emipre, it would help the cause imensly. i do understant the mishinations to international trade and it takes time to move product to foreign ports of call. but i also hear, read much ballyhoo about hwo freebsd should be advertised . what better adveritisment than reliable media supply, to places that even the linux netowrk resellers take a second look at. no amout of rhetororic is going to repair the damage caused by "but we have it ordered and walnut creek 'forgot' to send us our cds" .. that is all it takes to make yet another sale for linux, or someting else in the same price bracket. here in australia tht means microsoft windows ... any saterday yo can go toa weekend computer fair and pickup legitimate copies of ms windows for between thirty and fifty dollars .. not bad concidering freebsd starts at $42 and can be as high as $65, all come from walnut creek all at the same original reseller price. well this is the free market, i suppose. regards jonathan, with an alternate view of the world. -- =============================================================================== Jonathan Michaels PO Box 144, Rosebery, NSW 1445 Australia =========================================================== To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Feb 16 19:24:45 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from zippy.cdrom.com (zippy.cdrom.com [204.216.27.228]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4BEC41119B; Tue, 16 Feb 1999 19:24:20 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jkh@zippy.cdrom.com) Received: from zippy.cdrom.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by zippy.cdrom.com (8.9.3/8.9.2) with ESMTP id TAA23961; Tue, 16 Feb 1999 19:24:09 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from jkh@zippy.cdrom.com) To: Andrew Cc: freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: Important Note about ver3 In-reply-to: Your message of "Wed, 17 Feb 1999 10:09:27 GMT." <0003440cad40ca70_mailit@mail.fandom.net> Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 19:24:08 -0800 Message-ID: <23957.919221848@zippy.cdrom.com> From: "Jordan K. At a guess, you have a version of TeX installed that is *not* print/teTeX-beta. The check for TeX's existance could probably be made smarter in the JadeTeX port. At the moment, the only solution I have to hand is to install teTeX-beta and make sure that the JadeTeX port uses *that* version of TeX when installing itself. Well, I consider it a show stopper that I can't install the tools needed for formatting this stuff, and it's not for want of trying. Yes, I got your private message about the versions of the software that you're using, but I can't build the stuff here, and I haven't been able to for at least a month or two. I'd guess that this is one of the reasons you haven't got much feedback. The directions all seem very straight forward and I'd love to follow them, but for the life of me I can't find the kern.flp and mfsroot.flp files. The documentation wants me to run the fdimage program to copy the kern.flp file to one floppy and the mfsroot file to another floppy and then I'm to boot using them. But I can't find the *.flp files so can't even begin. Too bad ftp won't let me do a find command. Perhaps then I could get started. Please tell me the full directory path to the *.flp files. None of the docs I can find tell where the .flp files reside, and there _used_ to be a direct link to the floppy image (up until 3.1-RELEASE). The only reason I found them is because I've been messing with FreeBSD since 2.2.2-RELEASE - how are new users supposed to find the floppies?
