The handbook gives you the syntax, the user need only type it (or use a mouse to cut-n-paste). If cutting and pasting a relatively simple command line is a problem for the user, they should not be using Unix (IMHO). If the user fears they will forget the command line there is always the options of: alias tuc="perl -i.bak -npe 's/\r\n/\n/g'" Or save it to a command for all to use: $ cat > /usr/local/bin/tuc #!/usr/local/bin/perl -pi.bak s/\r\n/\n/g ^D $ chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/tuc The basic point being that a "dos2unix" program is an entire one line of Perl code (currently the most portable language on the planet), is not used often (relatively speeking), and as such I would see no reason to bother installing a C version. -Note that perl is always installed on a FreeBSD system. > At any rate, I was simply trying to offer a simple solution to the FreeBSD > team, to use as they please if they please. That, after all, is relative. As I said, I thought I was talking to the maintainer of the FAQ, and simply wanted to let him/her/them know there was an alternative. That's all, really. :-) By the way, tuc does not just strip carriage returns. It uses a state machine, so it converts files of all commonly used conventions to the Unix convention: cr, cr/lf, cr/lf/lf... (for more than one line - I have seen files like that), lf/cr, and lf alone (of course the latter does not need to be converted). Also, since it is written in ANSI C, it can be compiled to run both on Unix and DOS/Windows (or anything else that has an ANSI compiler), so it has the convenience of using the same command on both systems for people who use them. I wrote it for my own use when I first got started with FreeBSD several months ago, and simply offered it as an option for others because I wanted to give something back. I am still fairly new to FreeBSD. So please bear with me if I used the wrong chanel. I may be picking a nit, however the above is considered to be the "syntax". Even a program that takes no arguments at all has a syntax, albeit a void one. To use tuc, one would still need to view a man page or similar. One can not assume anything. For instance, one might assume that it worked like this (as many commands do): tuc file_one file_two > outfile If one did, they would be very disappointed to find file_two gone. So yes, there still is new syntax to learn or at least review when needed. One of the reasons for the inclusion of the perl command is that it automatically saves a backup file of the original, thus helping to prevent disaster. Another reason is that it gets people a little more familiar with perl in general. The command given in the handbook is: perl -i.bak -npe 's/\r\n/\n/g' file This same code can be easily changed to do other simple tasks: perl -i.bak -npe 's/teh/the/g' file Or just slightly more complex: perl -pe 's/(byron|brummer)/\u$1/ig' file In short, setting the user on a path to help themself when more complex problems arise. > At any rate, I did not mean to start a big discussion about what is easier > or better, and what is not. Still, one line: s/\r|\r\n|\r\n\n|\n\r/\n/; Any others can be added trivially as well. Perhaps you should pick up a bit of Perl? :-) >snip< > I wrote it for my own use when I first got started with FreeBSD several > months ago, and simply offered it as an option for others because I wanted > to give something back. > > I am still fairly new to FreeBSD. Typically the best place for ideas such as this is an open forum, such as the general mailing lists and .misc newsgroups. It's generally better for ideas to be openly debated before they are adopted in the large. I really would suggest picking up some perl. It's pretty much the most powerful power tool you'll find anywhere. You might even find yourself disliking C quite a bit after perl, most do. :-) -- -Zenin (zenin@archive.rhps.org) Your Official ORGy sites! This is why the tr alternate in the handbook uses "tr -d '\r'". Also, the extra cat is not needed as the handbook example shows: tr -d '\r' < dos-text-file > unix-file Personally, I normally recommend a slightly modified version of the perl simply because many people I work with are also on Macs: perl -pi.bak -e 's/\r\n|\r/\n/g' file Or if you want the call style that the tr example uses, you can use: perl -pe 's/\r\n|\r/\n/g' < dos-or-mac-text-file > unix-file perl -e 'print unpack "u", "82G5S=\"!!;F]T:&5R(%!E&H1+! My PC has Windows NT and I would really appreciate having the handbook ind the Adobe PDF format. I printed out a couple of pages with Ghostview and the Postscript version of your documentation, but the docs suffered a major loss of quality, because I split the pages to get two of them on one physical sheet of paper (with psnup). Printing the PDF version, with prior "splitting" with FinePrint does look great, unfortunately only an old version of the docs is available via download (PDF-> February, 1998, PS-> March/February, 1999). Is there any chance of getting a PDF version that is up to date ? Alternatively, is there any chance of splitting and printing the PS one without a loss of quality ? Thank you for your assistance. Kind regards. I've found a number of problems with lines which are too long. In many cases, it was easy enough to fix them, but I'm not clear whether the commit freeze is still in effect. If it is, I think we should consider thawing it. The other problem I have is that the formatting seems to have problems. In particular, the and tags have an annoying tendency to wrap where they shouldn't, even inserting hyphens. If they see a lone hyphen on a long line, they'll break there regardless of position, so something like this: # diablo-if-net - Text filter for Diablo printer `scrivener' listening # on port 5100. Installed in /usr/local/libexec/diablo-if-net gets formatted as: # diablo-if-net - Text filter for Diablo printer `scrivener' listening # on port 5100. Installed in /usr/local/libexec/diablo-if- net I believe that these tags should not wrap at all. It's up to TeX to signal an overfull \hbox. Just as soon as I've got a few reports from people doing "make release" that my proposed changes don't screw up anything (so that I can commit them without fear of people yelling "You broke 'make release'!" at me) and just as soon as I've the website correctly building locally, so I can have it build the DocBook Handbook instead of the LinuxDoc one. I then commit these changes within a few minutes of each other, so the window for the website and/or "make release" being out of sync is very small. I should be able to do the website tomorrow night (thanks to some pointers from Wolfram). If I haven't heard back from people doing "make release" by then I might just commit the changes and wait for the screams of anguish. > > Any objection if I forward your message on to Norm Walsh, the > > stylesheet maintainer to get this looked at? > > Sure, good idea. You should talk to the Documentation Project about this--I'm forwarding this message. I don't know if there's any effort under way to translate the handbook into Portuguese, but I'm sure they'll tell you. I tried disabling all other unused devices except ppc0 (keeping only fdc0, wdc0, wdc1, ppc0, atkbd0, and sc0 -- I also have the PCI-based fxp0 but you can't disable that without removing the card) and the problem still existed (even though the visual kernel configuration stated there were no conflicts). When I disabled ppc0 it worked. I'm able to boot the system by disabling _only_ ppc0. After installing, I need to disable ppc0 automatically otherwise the boot would hang with the same error as originally described (except it changed to the boot disk instead of fd0). To automatically disable ppc0, I did the following (mostly just documenting this in case someone else runs into the same problem): 1. At the boot prompt, enter "boot -c". 2. At the "config>" prompt, enter "visual" to enter the visual kernel configuration editor. 3. Disable ppc0. 4. Once the system has booted, log in as root. 5. Verify that /kernel.config contains the following lines, di ppc0 q 6. Move /kernel.config to /boot/kernel.conf % mv /kernel.config /boot/kernel.conf 7. Create /boot/loader.rc and add the following lines verbatim. load /kernel load -t userconfig_script /boot/kernel.conf autoboot 8. Then reboot. I still don't know that the original problem was (and now I can't use the parallel port). Can this information be added to the FAQ, handbook, or ERRATA.TXT file? Steps 6 and 7 are in the ERRATA.TXT file on the FTP site, but there's no mention of a problem with ppc0. Is there some known problem with ppc0? I can't seem to find a hardware conflict. In this case, I can tell you to check out www.cdrom.com or mail to info@cdrom.com for information on ordering FreeBSD on CD-ROM. (2.2.7 -> 2.2.8 was ``trivial''). * What problems? * /etc/rc.firewall wasn't restored: A new version of that file was installed in /etc instead of keeping around my existing (and highly customized version). Just FYI. * ldconfig and aout->elf shared libraries: Yes the notes warned about this one :-) I suspect that further preparation is needed on my part - but then I didn't have much to go on. When the system comes up /etc/defaults/rc.conf sets ``ldconfig_paths_aout'' to "/usr/lib/compat/aout /usr/X11R6/lib/aout /usr/local/lib/aout". Unfortunately on an ill prepared ex 2.2.8 system this isn't the case. Perhaps a note bringing the admins attention to this one. The admin could then: re-arrange their shared libraries in readiness; just append the old paths to the above. * New bind (named), no compatibility mode, no obvious doco: Another big jump. Bind changes and there isn't a quick/easy way to revert to the old bind while the new config file is being built. (Fortunately the new bind does come up in a vaguely sane state :-). The real problem was finding any documentation on this new beastie so that I could get my server working again. * Kernel. Hey the new man pages are useful! Migrating my kernel config to the new sources didn't prove too hard. I just had to grub through config/{GENERIC,LINT} and device man pages (bktr was very clear) to determine what I needed to add/delete. No real surprises with this one. * A ``X-Kern-Developer'' category? ``Full binaries and doc, kernel sources, X Window system''. Just a suggestion :-) * Should the ports/src directories be moved aside? Just some defensive thoughts (I did this by hand). Should the upgrade process at least warn the user that the /usr/ports and /usr/src directories are about to be trashed. (Since they contain both old and new stuff they need replacing. For ports, what I did was saved /usr/ports/distfiles but trashed everything else. >How-To-Repeat: Try doing another 2.2.8 -> 3.1 migration >Fix: If this is all I've got to complain about things can't be going too bad. This is a standard part of FreeBSD, but must be enabled with: "sysctl -w net.inet.ip.fastforwarding=1" ...and of course forwarding must also be enabled. This should probably be modified to use the zone allocator for speed and space efficiency. The current algorithm also appears to lose if the number of active paths exceeds IPFLOW_MAX (256), in which case it wastes lots of time trying to figure out which cache entry to drop. >Fix: Index: inet.4 =================================================================== RCS file: /usr/FreeBSD-CVS/src/share/man/man4/inet.4,v retrieving revision 1.8 diff -u -r1.8 inet.4 --- inet.4 1997/02/22 13:24:32 1.8 +++ inet.4 1999/03/19 16:05:52 @@ -209,13 +209,22 @@ MIB.
