Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello! Last time I read section #PORTING-AUTOPLIST everything worked fine. But now something is wrong, I think. Let us compare. I will do this in a port that is not maintained by me, but maintained by a committer. Let's take archivers/bzip2 First, make sure your port is almost complete, with only PLIST missing. Create an empty PLIST. # touch PLIST This is not important, but it should be ``touch pkg/PLIST'' Additionally, this step is obselete... Next, create a new set of directories which your port can be installed, and install any dependencies. # mtree -U -f /etc/mtree/BSD.local.dist -d -e -p /var/tmp/port-name # make depends PREFIX=/var/tmp/port-name Ok. Let us do this. I call the port "test". root:/usr/ports/archivers/bzip2 $ mkdir /var/tmp/test root:/usr/ports/archivers/bzip2 $ mtree -U -f /etc/mtree/BSD.local.dist -d -e -p /var/tmp/test [...] root:/usr/ports/archivers/bzip2 $ make depends PREFIX=/var/tmp/test Store the directory structure in a new file. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ # (cd /var/tmp/port-name && find * \! -type d) > OLD-DIRS ok. Where's the sense? That makes no sense, because there are no files in it. You WANT the directories, why do you EXCLUDE them?? root:/usr/ports/archivers/bzip2 $ cd /var/tmp/test && find * \! -type d root:/usr/ports/archivers/bzip2 $ shouldn't it be: root:/usr/ports/archivers/bzip2 $ cd /var/tmp/test && find * -type d [...] all the existing dirs in /var/tmp/test root:/usr/ports/archivers/bzip2 $ I think it should. You must also add any newly created directories to the packing list. # (cd /var/tmp/port-name && find * -type \ d) | comm -13 OLD-DIRS - | sed -e \ 's#^#@dirrm#' >> pkg/PLIST OLD-DIRS is empty (I showed you), so also "sbin" or "man" is part of the port's PLIST. That is probably wrong. The sed stuff is a little weird. It won't work this way: root:/usr/ports/archivers $ (cd /var/tmp/test && find * -type d ) | \ sed -e 's#^#@dirrm#' @dirrmbin @dirrmetc .... Please adjust it to 's#^#@dirrm #' root:/usr/ports/archivers $ (cd /var/tmp/test && find * -type d ) | \ sed -e 's#^#@dirrm #' @dirrm bin @dirrm etc Thanks. Oh: Well, it is possible that I'm wrong or I missed a point. Please tell me. Alex -- I doubt, therefore I might be. The PR remains in this state pending a response from the originator. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. They're also trying to provide a forum for the discussion of issues (such as documentation licensing) that affect all the open source documentation projects out there. More information at http://www.oswg.org/ It would be great to see some of the regulars (and irregulars) from -doc on their mailing list. They also have a CVS tree for new documentation that (I'm proud to say) is modelled strongly on our recent efforts. The HTML bit is a red herring -- the case conversion is carried out by /usr/local/share/sgml/docbook/dsssl/modular/lib/dblib.dsl:normalize() according to the SGML declaration in effect at the time. At the time, the SGML declaration being used is the one for DocBook, where IDs are mapped to upper case. At least, that's my reading of it at the moment. We could write our own version of normalize() which didn't do this. I suspect we'd then be wrong according to the spec, which would be a bad thing. Depending on how much work it is on the part of the ports team (and if it's work we can help with then let us know) I'd rather we bit the bullet and moved over. An alternative would be another post-processing of the HTML to make the attributes lower case. This is probably still within the (HTML) spec, so would be allowed. Thoughts? At least, it is for the web tree. The docs are built if you do the appropriate "make" inside the www/en/ tree. I had a choice of either chaning all the URLs over to the new structure, or preserving the old URLs, and putting up with the inconsistency. I chickened out, and decided that it wasn't worth breaking everyone's bookmarks for. At some point in the future we'll probably switch to installing things in to the 'right' place, and using symlinks. After doing that for a while we'll start putting in messages that pop up if the 'old' URL is used. And after doing that for a few months (and monitoring the error logs to see how often these pages are requested) we'll cut over to a new scheme completely. This'll probably start happening some time next February, when I get a bit more spare time. The following patch changes the logic from if (foo1) { } else if (foo2) { } ... to if (!foo1) if (!foo2) ... avoiding the need to insert an empty `then' clause. The code for the Fx macro is similar and an equivalent patch is appended, though this latter patch hasn't been verified. A positive side-effect of the patch is to remove a number of "unbalanced .el request" warnings if -ww is enabled. Docs crew, can we get this FAQ'd, please? I'm writing this up nice and detailed this time for exactly this purpose. (If it's already FAQ'd, please pass me a URL and a pointy hat.) "I booted off my ATAPI CD-Rom, but the install program says no CD-Rom is found. Where did it go?" The usual cause of this problem is a misconfigured CD-Rom drive. Many PCs now ship with the CD-Rom as a secondary slave, with no secondary master. This is illegal according to the ATAPI specifications, but Windows lets you get away with it. Reconfigure your hardware so that the CD-Rom is on a controller with a master, either by adding a master device or making your CD-Rom the master. ==ml To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Tue Oct 26 14:36:49 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk (nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk [193.237.89.66]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35F0314D2F for ; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 14:36:40 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nik@nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk) Received: from kilt.nothing-going-on.org (kilt.nothing-going-on.org [192.168.1.18]) by nothing-going-on.demon.co.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id WAA49964 for ; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 22:31:26 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from nik@catkin.nothing-going-on.org) Received: (from nik@localhost) by kilt.nothing-going-on.org (8.9.3/8.9.3) id WAA20848 for doc@freebsd.org; Tue, 26 Oct 1999 22:21:11 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from nik@catkin.nothing-going-on.org) Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 22:21:11 +0100 From: Nik Clayton To: doc@freebsd.org Subject: [bortzmeyer@debian.org: Re: DOCBOOK: DocBook-XML and conditional sections] Message-ID: <19991026222111.A19720@kilt.nothing-going-on.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.95.4i Organization: Nik at home, where there's nothing going on Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I'm forwarding this (somewhat late) as requested. Stephane's on holiday at the moment, and back at the beginning of November. I like the solution though, and think it's something we should probably adopt to solve our versioning problems. I've asked Stephane to consider making the attribute names OS neutral (i.e., osversionmin, and so on) so that documents are more easily portable between us. I would have no qualms about recommending that we write something like The foo was is called bar in FreeBSD 2.2.2. or similar. That's a bit of a mouthful to write, and we could use general entities relatively easily, something like ... ... What's also nice about this is that we can put constraints in (our) DTD (which can be turned on or off with a parameter entity) to ensure that mistakes like (i.e., a typo in the attribute value) are spotted by the SGML parser and flagged as errors. Thoughts? Assuming everyone likes this I'll wait for Stephane to get back from holiday, check out the issues above, and then commit something that implements it. Well, Debian has several branches and the documentation manager merges them from time to time. But I wanted to try a pure SGML solution. > I don't think this scales well, and it makes it difficult to pull out > a version of the documentation which (for example) only contains text > appropriate for version 3.1 or 2.2.8. I finally added THREE attributes: debianversionequal, debianversionmin and debianversionmax. The first one is for info which depends on one specific release, the other two (which can be combined) is for more traditional info ("Starting from 2.2...", "Until version 1.1"). In the filtering program, you just have to write a comparison function which works for you (RELENG_3 > RELENG_22, despite what the math says). > A pre-processor would go through the SGML, leaving only those elements > that either have no OS attribute, or have a specific value in it. I have written such a pre-processor, if you like (a few lines of Perl + XML::DOM). > 3. Use parameter entities; Does not allow ranges, such as 2.2 < version < 3.1. > and so on. This rocks. It's great to see someone actually working on this (it's so frustrating when I don't have the time to implement half the stuff I want to). A few comments: * The Doc. Proj. docs can be installed in multiple languages and encodings, as well as all the different formats, so you might want a way of representing that in the output. * I'm an HTML purist, so going from "

" to "

" in the output without an intervening "

" grates. * I think we should reserve a directory under /usr/local/share/doc, to contain additional information about this process. For example, the generated page should probably contain a link at the bottom, something like: This page is automatically generated, please do not edit it by hand. _More information_ about the process used to generate it is available. where _More information_ is the link (or similar). We can also put graphics in this directory to jazz things up a bit (FreeBSD logo, icons for HTML, PS, PDF, that sort of thing). We can also include links to things like the: "New ports in the past two weeks" page The script that checks to see which installed ports are out of date * Statistics? Perhaps a "X ports are installed on this machine" or similar at the bottom? * Configurability -- the local SA probably has software installed that isn't in the ports tree. It would be nice if they could maintain their own +DOCS file (in the same format) somewhere central (perhaps /usr/local/share/+DOCS, although that's a fairly poor name), so that the documentation list can include local applications as well. Just a few thoughts there, anyway. Great work! OK, Here's the latest. There are 3 scripts, all of which are available from http://ukug.uk.freebsd.org/~andrew/docindex/ 1) docindex - Builds the /usr/local/share/doc/instdocs.html page from the information in /var/db/pkg/*/+DOCS files. Should be run on all machines either from /var/periodic/daily|weekly or /var/rc (diffs for 3.1-R available). The FAQ and Handbook aren't included because they're in that static index written by Neil Blakey-Milner, which should probably link to this index. 2) docsmaker - Builds a +DOCS file when supplied with the path to the /var/db/pkg/*/+CONTENTS file and the new DOCS file usually /var/db/pkg/*/+DOCS. This script is now slightly more intelligent then it was before, and won't produce any of that 'Title Unknown' rubbish. 3) makealldocs - Just runs docsmaker for each port/package installed on the system. I'm thinking that this is all just about finished, so if no one has any problems, I'll have a word with -ports and see what support I can drum up. --- Andrew Boothman FreeBSD UK User Group http://ukug.uk.FreeBSD.org/~andrew/ http://ukug.uk.FreeBSD.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-doc" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-doc Wed Oct 27 10: 6:24 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Received: from sand2.global.net.uk (sand2.global.net.uk [195.147.246.100]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7946814A15 for ; Wed, 27 Oct 1999 10:06:21 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from andrew@ukug.uk.FreeBSD.org) Received: from pf7s08a01.client.global.net.uk ([195.147.136.248] helo=cream.org) by sand2.global.net.uk with esmtp (Exim 2.05 #1) id 11gWWU-0001eR-00; Wed, 27 Oct 1999 18:06:07 +0100 Content-Length: 666 Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.3 [p0] on FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <19991027143218.C15134@lehman.com> Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 18:05:31 +0100 (BST) From: Andrew Boothman To: Nik Clayton Subject: Re: Documentation index latest Cc: FreeBSD-Doc@FreeBSD.org Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On 27-Oct-99 Nik Clayton wrote: > A few comments I'll look into all this. Assuming for the moment that the effort underway to automatically generate a hyperlinked list of pointers to documentation about ports/packages available on the local machine succeeds (I hope it does), and further assuming that this effort will need to read files in /var/db/pkg (COMMENT and DESCR, to name two) in order to build this list, and knowing that the documentation is now pkg_add'able. . . . . . would we not be better off massaging the package target to automatically pull out the title and/or from each document, as text for COMMENT and DESCR files (assuming they didn't already exist). "make install" could be tweaked to do the install, and then put the necessary files in /var/db/pkg (I'm somewhat hazy about how the ports system does this). The docs would then automatically appear on this automatically generated list of links to documentation. The list would also be up to date with respect to the documentation the user had actually installed. Thoughts? My assumption is that camcontrol(8) > should refer to these, and the (9) was a mistake? Yes, camcontrol(8) should refer to cam(4) and xpt(4). As for the xpt(9) and cam(9) references, look in the BUGS section of the camcontrol(8) man page: BUGS Most of the man page cross references don't exist yet. This will be fixed soon. Of course, it's been over a year, and I haven't had time to write cam(9) or xpt(9). If the missing cross-references are causing problems, go ahead and take them out, but make sure you take out the paragraph from the BUGS section as well. N ----- Forwarded message from Paul Jones ----- Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 14:23:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Paul Jones To: techwriters@linuxchix.org, Deb Richardson Subject: [oswg] metadata for Linux docs as i mentioned in earlier e-mail, we've been working on an initial description of metadata elements for Linux Documents of all sorts derived from Dublin Core elements with an XML DTD and a prototype entry template that produces XML for use in a variety of database applications. http://metalab.unc.edu/osrt/projects.html we in this case are: Miles Efron, Kendall Clark, Jane Greenberg, Matt Knuppel, Ishmael Olea, Paul Jones and Victor Ruiz (sorry if i left anyone out). The idea is that the metadata conform to known standards, be somewhat independent of the documents (like say card catalogue records), be simple enough to be filled out by the authors (like the LSMs), be easily shared, and enhance searching and retrival of relevant documents. in theory, someone could do a template based search (sorta like http://metalab.unc.edu/linsearch/ ) and find a How-to on modems in Polish, or all the documents written by Victor, or even all video sources of eric raymond talks which may not even be on-line. please let us know what you think. thanks, P ========================================================================== Paul Jones "We must protect our precious bodily fluids!"
