I'm not using it personally, but Tim is (Tim Jones, w/the BRU guys), and he keeps running down the hall shouting "Hallaleu!" (if you don't know what I'm talking about, you're not a redneck :-). He once said to me that he could have any tape drive shipped to him by any manufacturer for free for testing purposes, but the Ecrix is one that he would actually pay money for. There was an article in Smart Reseller or maybe it was Computer Reseller News that compared the VXA with the latest incarnation of the Exabyte Mammoth (well, they're both an 8mm format, right?!), and they mentioned that the VXA had the best compression they'd ever seen (but the Mammoth had the capacity lead as well as tape changers, etc.). I don't know how well it does with compressed files, though. - Eric Green, eric@estinc.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Mon Nov 15 7:23: 5 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from garbo.lodgenet.com (garbo.lodgenet.com [204.124.122.252]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8784D14D8C for ; Mon, 15 Nov 1999 07:22:46 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from prentice.plucker@lodgenet.com) Received: from chaplin.lodgenet.com (chaplin.lodgenet.com [10.0.104.215]) by garbo.lodgenet.com (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id JAA07565 for ; Mon, 15 Nov 1999 09:22:42 -0600 (CST) Received: by chaplin.lodgenet.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) id <49SDAPBA>; Mon, 15 Nov 1999 09:21:28 -0600 Message-ID: <3EA88113DE92D211807300805FA7994201C42376@chaplin.lodgenet.com> From: "Plucker, Prentice" To: "'freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org'" Subject: Linksys HPN100 support Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 09:21:25 -0600 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) Content-Type: text/plain Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org I am trying to get a Linksys HPN100 network card to work with FreeBSD 3.3 This is a PCI card that uses the AMD chip for HomePNA. The system will be used to store and process large Internet trace files, quite likely in gzip'ed form. There will be massive sequential access, many files will be readonly. I'd be interested to hear some experience/stories from people running such systems. I need to make a choice among the big PC manufacturers (Dell, Compaq, you name it). I'm interested in running vinum rather than a commercial RAID product (if any form of RAID is required at all). I'm also interested about network-fanout stories. If you want to use an ATAPI burner, you'll need to use wormcontrol(8).
