I can't really comment on the SMP issue, but we've been quite happy with the Dell servers (4350 and 2300s mostly). Fast, run FreeBSD well, with good LVD SCSI drives, the I/O screams. Dell do nice rack mount servers up to 8 processor. An 8450 with the 64-bit Adaptec 3950U2W cards and external shelves of LVD drives would probably fly. Alternatively, though I haven't tried it, fibre channel with the Qlogic cards might work better. It depends what you are optimising for. Dell do nice external disk shelves, but I have little experience with them; we use Network Appliance filers for all our large storage needs, something you might also consider, depending on what you want and can afford. We did have problems with SMP hangs in stable a while back, but I haven't tested in a while (we only use UP boxes in production, so the SMP stuff is just for testing). Given that FreeBSD still uses a single big lock for the kernel, your applications would need to be very CPU intensive to make much use of lots of processors. An I/O loaded application might be just as fast on a single processor box. I've had bad experiences with Compaq kit being non-standard in the past, but the Digital stuff might be OK. Joerg> I'm also interested about network-fanout stories. We may Joerg> NFS-mount the server and have a 100MBit Ethernet box behind it Joerg> for access from a farm of PCs. The Intel PRO/100 cards are great for 100Mb, but almost any of the Dell boxes will easily max one out for NFS and file transfers. You might want to consider either Gigabit ethernet or multiple 100Mb cards if you want really fast access from lots of clients. -- Alan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Mon Nov 22 8:40:40 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from moo.sysabend.org (moo.sysabend.org [209.0.55.68]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8F0C814EFB for ; Mon, 22 Nov 1999 08:40:33 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from ragnar@sysabend.org) Received: by moo.sysabend.org (Postfix, from userid 1004) id E6BA87555; Mon, 22 Nov 1999 08:41:15 -0800 (PST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by moo.sysabend.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D3E281D86; Mon, 22 Nov 1999 08:41:15 -0800 (PST) Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 08:41:15 -0800 (PST) From: Jamie Bowden To: Chris the Elder Cc: hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: 228 & Ultra-wide SCSI In-Reply-To: <199911221456.QAA15416@cequrux.com> Message-ID: Approved: yep X-representing: Only myself. I ran it on mine with no problems. Ha! I see what's wrong. This god-damned card is actually a 2940UW Pro. So first, I'll add the vendor ids and whatnot to aic7xxx.c, and make the driver treat it like a 2940UW. If that doesn't work, then I'll simply buy a real 2940UW. I was very interested as we currently use several of their SmartRAID IV cards in our FreeBSD boxes and we are very pleased. I have scanned the archives of the lists and I see that SmartRAID V support is not yet ready, and the DPT SmartRAID webpages do not list FreeBSD as a platform that is supported. However, the new webpages for the SmartRAID VI *DO* list FreeBSD as a supported OS, and I was wondering if anyone had tested or developed the drivers or knew of anyone that has used a SmartRAID VI card on a FreeBSD box. If so, does anyone know if it uses the driver that powers the SmartRAID IV that is in the -STABLE and -RELEASE trees now, or does it exsist only in the -CURRENT tree (the website dosen't mention anything about what releases/trees the driver is in, it just says FreeBSD)? .--------------------------------------+--------------------------------------. | Robert Gash | Work - gashalot@fasturl.net | | Systems Administrator, FastURL | Personal - gashalot@gashalot.com | | http://www.fasturl.net | http://www.gashalot.com | `- GNUPG Key Fingerprint: 8122 587F 660D 68C7 BD5B A235 C59E 130B 44FB F5BC -' To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-hardware Wed Nov 24 18: 4: 1 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from longacre.demon.co.uk (longacre.demon.co.uk [158.152.156.24]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EF5F1150F7 for ; Wed, 24 Nov 1999 18:03:56 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from searle@longacre.demon.co.uk) Received: (from searle@localhost) by longacre.demon.co.uk (8.9.3/8.9.3) id BAA10485; Thu, 25 Nov 1999 01:43:01 GMT (envelope-from searle) Message-ID: <19991125014301.05392@longacre.demon.co.uk> Date: Thu, 25 Nov 1999 01:43:01 +0000 From: Michael Searle To: hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Intellimouse support Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 0.89i Sender: owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org The moused manual shows support for the MS Intellimouse. Any NS20 SCSI will work with FreeBSD. I can verify that the Tecmar will work fine with FreeBSD, and the mechanism itself is not as flimsy as with most Travan drives (in particular avoid the Seagate and Tendenburg drives, which have EXTREMELY flimsy plastic gears that tend to "strip out"). I have not personally looked at the HP Surestore. I will just note that NS20 technology does not appear to be the most reliable in the world. Approximately 25% of the time I cannot verify a backup that I just made, no matter what the NS20 drive! Perhaps that's just me and the tapes I have and the machine I have, but it doesn't inspire confidence in me :-(. -Eric To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-hardware" in the body of the message
