Why would you wish to force and idle time of 10 minutes? Using your own argument you are just giving money to Deutsche Telekom... I find, in the U.K., that the delay from clicking on a link in IE when the isdn circuit is down to getting the page is around 2 seconds. That is so fast I hardly notice if the circuit was up or down before I follow a link. Of course if your call set up times and ISP authentication is a lot slower I see why you with the longer idle timeout. I own an Elsa PCC-16 ISDN card. It is a passive 16 bit ISA card, which is almost identical to the Elsa Quickstep 1000 ISA, except for the fact that the Quickstep supports PNP, while the PCC doesn't. The PCC is the direct predecessor of the Quickstep card. I tried to make isdn4bsd work with my PCC-16 card using the settings for the Elsa Quickstep, but hard-wiring IRQ, Memory-Area etc. in the kernel config file, but when booting, the kernel always tells me that the isic0 device could not be found. I suspect that only very few changes to the code must be made in order to make the Quickstep driver work with the PCC-16. Hellmuth suggested that the isdn4linux code might be instructive, which supports the PCC as well as the Quickstep. Unfortunately, I don't have either the time or the insight into the i4b code to do it on my own. So is there anybody out there who already has patched isdn4bsd to work with the pcc-16, or anybody who might want to do the job? I would be available for testing things, or I could lend the card to the developer for the time he does the job. I could also consider donating it, if this is necessary. Before anybody jumps at this, please note that the last remaining stock of the PCC card (and the related PCF and PCF/pro, which have additional functionality but should also work with any PCC driver) have been sold out recently at www.elsa.com, so I don't think you can buy these models any more, though they probably have quite a large installed base. Here is my current status. The original version was written in Perl. But had a number of problems with the graphs and I hate maintaining Perl code. Further the gdchart software is feature poor for this application. (Cannot chart Tx and Rx against time). The current version is implemented in Python and is a nice clear and maintainable implementation. The python version has the following feature: * Three ways to graph the Tx and Rx data * Control over the length of time the graph shows * Control over number of log lines shown * Control over number of accounting lines shown * Style sheets used to allow user colour preferences to be used. I cannot easily release a kit until the Python Image Library (PIL) comes out of beta. I've been finding bugs in it that will be fixed in the next PIL kit. The Python and PIL folks are talking about releasing at the start of March. I'll take the release kits and run against them then release ISDN status. I've been testing the card today, with various and not so good results. Isdntrace works fine and reports all activety on the isdn line correctly. Below you can see the output when I a) pick up the phone b) hang up the phone c) pick up the phone and dial my own number d)get busy signal and hang up the phone On the other hand, when I try to run /usr/src/i4b/isdntest/isdntest -i mynumber -o mynymber -w I get lots of error msgs. The msgs are included below. Looks like the driver doesn't work correctly with the asuscom card. But what I find strange, is that isdntrace manages to use the driver and monitor the line, but isdntest won't work. It's very strange to me. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Does it look like we need a seperate driver for the asuscom card ? I would think that only small modifications to the dyanlink driver would make the asuscom card work, wouldn't you? I also tried with another asuscom card, because I thought mine was fried or something, but with the same results. - Jon ------------------------ isdntrace ----------------------- =========== isdntrace controller #0 =========== started Mon Feb 15 13:03:36 1999 -- NT->TE - unit:0 - frame:000028 - time:15.02 13:03:39.237995 - length:3 ------ Dump:000 00 8b 73 ..s Q921: SAP=0 (Call Control), R, TEI=69, U-Frame: UA PF 1 -- NT->TE - unit:0 - frame:000029 - time:15.02 13:03:39.277996 - length:4 ------ Dump:000 00 8b 01 02 .... Thus, when the ISDN thingy hangs up on me, the Emacs session is disrupted rather rudely. Thus, I want the connection to stay open (even if it costs money) while I stare at a program started interactively, but I also want the ability to hang up the phone when I feel like it. I'm open to other suggestions, though -- maybe there's something wrong with my thinking. kai -- I like _b_o_t_h kinds of music. What you need are two things: 1) a commandline utility, where you can say "hang up the line now" 2) a dial filter, which prevents further dial tries. Then what you do with it is write two scripts, lets name them "on" and "off" where on contains something like: isdnconnectcontrol hangup isdndialfilter -installfilter telnet to close the connection and prevent further dial retries and where on contains something like: isdndialfilter -deinstallfilter telnet Neither isdnconnectcontrol nor isdndialfilter are existent, but a similar effect should be gained by issuing "ifconfig ispX down" and "ifconfig ispX up". hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 559747-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 559747-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de 22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Mon Feb 15 06:28:48 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id GAA10577 for freebsd-isdn-outgoing; Mon, 15 Feb 1999 06:28:48 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from neutron.cichlids.com (as7-pri6.rp-plus.de [149.221.239.6]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id GAA10571 for ; Mon, 15 Feb 1999 06:28:44 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from alex@cichlids.com) Received: (qmail 4146 invoked by alias); 15 Feb 1999 14:04:14 -0000 Received: from cichlids.cichlids.com (HELO cichlids.com) (192.168.0.10) by neutron.cichlids.com with SMTP; 15 Feb 1999 14:04:14 -0000 Message-ID: <36C8287D.1F236456@cichlids.com> Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:00:29 +0100 From: Alexander Langer Organization: rheuma-online X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.07 [de]C-QXW03108 (Win98; I) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Two providers and natd Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hello! The natd thing with the example in contrib/ does work great for me. But I get problems if I want to change between ISP's. The first, currently working, is isp0. I usually use /etc/rc.isdn and manually added routes to choose between isp0 or isp1. But the natd stuff is set up in /etc/rc.firewall Do I have to modify and re-execute the whole /etc/rc.firewall script or is there a more easy possibility (for example by default starting natd for isp0 *and* isp1 and then HUP when a new connection is made)... Anyone uses natd and two ISP's ? Well, my original message contained the following: ,----- | Without link1, "ifconfig isp0 up" dials and "ifconfig isp0 down" hangs | up, but surely I'm not supposed to do "ifconfig isp0 down; ifconfig | isp0 up" for hanging up the phone with dial-on-demand? `----- Does this mean the answer to that last question is: `Yes, that's exactly what you should do.'? Okay. I'm surprised but that's okay. So, for hanging up the phone I'll do `ifconfig isp0 down; ifconfig isp0 up'. The latter is needed so that subsequent dial-on-demand attempts will work. kai -- I like _b_o_t_h kinds of music. Some thoughts to what might be happening: - pnp init may fail in some way - dynalink driver might not work with FreeBSD 3.0, maybe - irq conflict - i4b might not work with FreeBSD 3.0 correctly - i4b might not work correctly with your isdn switch - i4b config error (own MSN, for example) I've never tested the driver with anything else than FreeBSD 2.2.6/2.2.8 and my one Dynalink card. There have been reports of people using the driver with an Asus card. I'm afraid I can't help you much anymore, I don't know i4b that well, I just ported the low-level driver. hope you can get it working, Martijn To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Mon Feb 15 15:02:33 1999 Return-Path: Received: (from majordom@localhost) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) id PAA19736 for freebsd-isdn-outgoing; Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:02:33 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG) Received: from post.mail.nl.demon.net (post-10.mail.nl.demon.net [194.159.73.20]) by hub.freebsd.org (8.8.8/8.8.8) with ESMTP id PAA19728 for ; Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:02:31 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from rene@canyon.demon.nl) Received: from [212.238.15.212] (helo=canyon.demon.nl) by post.mail.nl.demon.net with esmtp (Exim 2.02 #1) id 10CX23-0006H3-00 for freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org; Mon, 15 Feb 1999 23:02:27 +0000 Received: (from rene@localhost) by canyon.demon.nl (8.9.2/8.9.2) id XAA00703 for freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org; Mon, 15 Feb 1999 23:41:50 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from rene) From: Rene de Vries Message-Id: <199902152241.XAA00703@canyon.demon.nl> Subject: Re: -current, dial-on-demand, hang up the phone? When the connection comes up for some other reason the firewall rule is simply deleted in some "/etc/isdn/isdn-up" script. This simple system proved out te be very effective! The biggest problem that a filter will have is dns lookups, if you block them, you effectively block auto dialing for anything (most connections start by looking up a host and then connecting...). The only strange effect that I observed is that if you change "deny" (in the ipfw rule) to "unreach host", the connection will still be initiated. I presume that the ICMP package that is send will go via the interface and cause this "wake-up". Rene BTW: here are the important parts from my setup. /etc/rc.firewall: /sbin/ipfw -q add 300 deny tcp from any to any 25 out via ${oif} /etc/isdn/isdnd.rc: regexpr = "ISP outgoing call active" regprog = isdn-up regexpr = "ISP outgoing call disconnected" regprog = isdn-down /etc/isdn/isdn-up: #! /bin/sh /sbin/ipfw -q delete 300 /bin/sleep 10 /usr/sbin/sendmail -q /etc/isdn/isdn-down: #! /bin/sh if ! /sbin/ipfw show 300 2>/dev/null >/dev/null ; then /sbin/ipfw -q add 300 deny tcp from any to any 25 out via isp0 fi > >From the keyboard of Kai.Grossjohann@CS.Uni-Dortmund.DE: > > > I start Emacs at work and let it (X11) display on my home machine. > > I have a dynamic ip address. The message (Receive Aborted error) is reported by the card if it receives a bad frame. The cause for this could be noise on your S0 bus. Make sure, this IRQ is disabled, or better yet try another one. Try playing around with your BIOS' settings for your ISDN-card's IRQ (change it from 'legacy ISA' to 'ISA/PNP' or something) - at least for me things started working then. Last time I tried this (still under BISDN) I shut down my machine remotely and due to that being a VLB MB with a broken keyboard reset and CPU reset didn't work either I called my wife do go down into the cellar and press that black stub reset button in the middle of that open PC case (hard enough to describe her how to locate the button). Anyway, while doing that I had called her on the ISDN phone on the same TA/S0 bus. We could hardly conversate because a terrible noise was heard in the phone. I said that I could not call the phone from outside when BISDN was running. But since BISDN/FreeBSD was shut down and hanging at the 'Rebooting' prompt I was suddenly able to call the phone from outside- but with this noise, though. Now when she pushed the reset button the noise suddelny was gone and I could talk to her clear and loud. I'm telling this whole story because I'm suspecting some problem with my creatix card which ever since I was owning it (I bought it in very ancient ISDN times from a small firm in Krefeld) one SMD device (a cap or resitor probably) was missing in the upper left to middle area of the card. It looked like that component had been desoldered advertently. I'm asking now if anyone out there who has a Creatix S0/16 can take a look at that card and tell me (with a looking glass perhaps) what the small SMD components in the upper left of the middle area are. Maybe I'll put up a scan of the card later today and pinpoint the compnonent (missing component). -- Chris Christoph P. U. With the help of Gary Jennehon I was able to get it to run, many thanks. After I changed the VendorID, the driver for the Quickstep1000 detected my Quickstep3000 and it seems to work. But now I have the problem that I can't access the S0-Bus. I configured the isdnd for sPPP and when I make a ping the system starts to dial and ends with lots of error-messages and finally says that there is no access to the S0-Bus. I attached the syslog-output for detailed information. Some pieces of the syslog-output look like the lines in the mail from Jon Lech Johansen and his Asuscom ISDN-Card. After the mails about this card I configured the answering-machine and called the card from my ISDN-Phone, but the card didn't recognize any calls. With WinNT the LED's on the back of the card are on after the System initialized it, but with i4b all LED's are off. There is a green one, wich detects the S0-Bus and a yellow one for an occupied B-Channel. I don't know if this will help to find the error, if any. The problem may be that the driver was originally written for a QS1000, does anybody use such a card and can tell me wether it works? May be it is necessary to change a few things in the QS1000-Driver (more than the VendorID, it was only a quick hack). In isdn4linux the QS1000-Driver should work with the QS3000 but I don't have a Linux-System to test it and I don't want to switch to Linux. I also don't want to burden work to others, so if there is work to do, I'll try to do it. Due to my limited knowledge of ISDN, UNIX and C it would take a while until I would get the problem fixed. I would be very grateful for any help. Well, I always assumed it, since it is named ISDN S0 on the rear sheet metal stripe. Serial No: 05132 BZT Nr. A113/330E. It has a 16 bit ISA connector. Mfgr. week/year seems to be 30/94 (etched into the solder stop mask on the solder side). On the component side the logo Creatix can be seen in etch print with a 'bc102.2' PCB ID (I would think) under it. > > Wolfgang > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message -- Chris Christoph P. While I didn't ever use BISDN, I've seen the effect you describe, too. It's most definitely not a problem with your hardware. It happened to me with several Teles and Creatix cards, and while using the Gerdes driver for Windows and i4b with NetBSD. Both drivers were fixed quite some time ago (about a year ago, IIRC). According to some technician at Gerdes, it had something to do with a bug in the HSCX, which doesn't work when shutdown, so you need to leave it running, but select an unused timeslot for it (or so he told me). Probably Hellmuth can tell more about it, as I didn't understand that completely. It explains why that noise happened at shutdown (soft reset) time and I believe it's not so important any longer. I was trying to find a reason why my phone was blocked while bisdn was running. Normally I don't phone while my computer is rebooting from that 'BROKEN_KEYBOARD_RESET' motherboard :-) (which doesn't boot in either mode, probably time to replace it anyway since situations where you have to send someone into the cellar to push the reset button even if it's my wife or perhaps even more when it's my wife aren't joyful anyway :-> ) Now I tested the same setup (though with the Fritz card now since I'm not finally sure whether my creatix is OK) and I find that my ISDN phone works as it should in parallel with i4b being active. > > Ciao, > Wolfgang > -- > ws@TooLs.DE (Wolfgang Solfrank, TooLs GmbH) +49-228-985800 > > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message -- Chris Christoph P. My problems never were related to 2 cards conflicting on the same IRQ, the only thing I had to do to finally get isdn4bsd up and running, was to change the setting for the IRQ my ISDN-card had from 'Legacy ISA' to 'ISA/PNP' in the BIOS (or something like that - I hardly ever touch my BIOS settings, so I may be mixing up the names for the entries). At least the errormessages you included in your original mail look very similar to the ones I had, so my first guess would be that you are encountering the same problem I had. Sounds reasonable, but I can´t confirm it. I did an ´ifconfig -a´ and a 'netstat -r' immediately before the 'ifconfig isp0 link1 ....' in rc.isdn and until isp0 gets configured there's definitely no route concerning isp0 nor is isp0 already configured. It's more or less a flaw because isp0 gets configured right after all, but I wanted to report it at least. Thanks to all who have answered!
