In short, i4b does not yet ignore LCP-Echo packets for idletime-hangup calculation and if the other side does not ignore them too, the line stays up forever. As far as i understood it, Brian Somers user ppp(8) handles this situation properly and ppp(8) is able to work with i4b since 0.82 - perhaps you might want to give it a try. > Incidentally, one thing missing from the documentation that would be useful > for at least some people is some instructions about getting i4b to work > "dial on command" rather than "dial on demand". I've heard this before and it is true, some lines are too long and the important information is sometimes not visible. The problem is the work required to make _all_ messages consistent in their form and to put the important information in the right place. An attempt to fix this failed miserably because it was just plain too much boring work. To avoid future complaints about those messages, there should be a configurable message database for isdnd ... [ 1/2 :-) - 1/2 :-( ]. > The "" part is just irritating. The log lines with CHD are insofar consistent in that they all have date, time, CHD, id, entry-name and message part. In case of a number not being found in an entry so the entry-name cannot be resolved is displayed as "" in the corresponding field. I still suspect (as author of the Fritz!Card PCI driver) that the bug is in the driver and is tickled by sPPP. Brian's user-ppp uses the rbch interface, which is in some ways much more simple than the ipr or isp interfaces. I make this bold statement because the problems seen with the Fritz!Card PCI and sPPP do not appear with any of the other supported cards. At least, I've never seen any problem reports. >So the use of Brian Somers ppp fixed my problem with corrupted emails >under 0.82 and my compilation problem with 0.83 (spppcontrol fails) because >ppp runs fine with 0.82 > good to know that Brian's stuff works so well. --- Gary Jennejohn Home - garyj@muc.de Work - garyj@fkr.dec.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Sun Oct 3 22:27:34 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from mail.vr.IN-Berlin.DE (gnu.in-berlin.de [192.109.42.4]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4880E14D2B for ; Sun, 3 Oct 1999 22:27:26 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from server.nostromo.in-berlin.de!ripley@servicia.in-berlin.de) Received: from uriela.in-berlin.de (IDENT:root@servicia.in-berlin.de [192.109.42.145]) by mail.vr.IN-Berlin.DE (8.9.3/8.9.3) with ESMTP id HAA12994 for ; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 07:27:24 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from server.nostromo.in-berlin.de!ripley@servicia.in-berlin.de) Received: by uriela.in-berlin.de (Smail-3.2.0.101 1997-Dec-17 #1) id m11Y1BB-000VR5C; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 08:00:57 +0200 (CEST) Received: (from ripley@localhost) by server.nostromo.in-berlin.de (8.9.3/8.9.3) id BAA49372 for isdn@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 01:25:37 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from ripley) Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 01:25:37 +0200 From: "H. I had problems with spppcontrol failing because, I did not give config a "-r" option when I built the new kernel. Once I fixed this, my experience was 1) Contrary to Udo Schweigert's experience, the machine would still NOT boot while the card was connected to the line. Like release 70, release 83 hung while attaching a driver to the first ISDN device. 2) Release 83 was unable to successfully negotiate a PAP connection to my ISP (FreeServe). In this respect, release 83 was WORSE than release 70, which negotiated the connection with no problem, based on the same isdnd.rc. Since I couldn't get 83 to work at all, I have gone back to 70. If anyone concerned with developing i4b wants to investigate why release 83 fails when release 70 works, there is a detailed log and tcpdump of 83's failed attempts to connect at http://www.hcrc.ed.ac.uk/~robert/OCT2B I'm don't have time to find out enough about PPP protocols to figure out what it all means, but if someone can shed any light, or wants me to investigate further, I'm prepared to give it another go... The same thing is happening to me, but various things have stopped me from finding out more - the worst of which is that I think the machine in question has some dodgy memory :-( I find that killing/restarting isdnd clears the problem too (I can't get to the cable to try removing/attaching it very easily). Bringing up the second B channel reliably causes the problem for me - the first time it works, but once it disconnects, only restarting isdnd will make the second B channel functional again. Sorry for such a lame report - I'm only really backing Joe up here rather than saying anything interesting :-/ > Joe > -- > Josef Karthauser FreeBSD: How many times have you booted today? > Technical Manager Viagra for your server (http://www.uk.freebsd.org) > Pavilion Internet plc. Ahh, so you want to exchange the "" against something shorter to see (more of) one or both numbers, is that correct ? So lets see: 04.10.1999 01:18:22 CHD 00081 incoming call from 3021478443 to 2147844 the format is fixed, because it should be easily parsable, we have: ^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ .... date time typ id entry message I could do 04.10.1999 01:18:22 CHD 00081 src 3021478443 dst 2147844, incoming call now think about this 04.10.1999 01:18:22 CHD 00081 src 0123456789012345 dst 0123456789012345, incoming call Numbers - IIRC - can be 15 digits max, so the next one will ask, is this an incoming or outgoing call ? I know, this is an extreme example, but my point is that its not done with some change here or there (because then you are satisfied, but its likely that someone else will get a different problem). Before touching this, please think about it a bit more. What do you want to accomplish ? Should all messages fit into 80 chars ? Is date, time, type and so on really necessary, are there shorter alternatives ? Would a continuation line do it: 04.10.1999 01:18:22 CHD 00081 incoming call: from: 0123456789012345 to: 0123456789012345 Should the user be somehow able to customize the log messages via a line in the isdnd.rc system section, like log-format = "%D %T %t %i %n from %s to %d" or so ? Or extend the message format to a: date, time, typ, id, entry, src (if available), dst (if available), message format ? I want the log message format to be consistent and easily parsable by default. Second, i'd like to touch the area of log messages only once again in the future and then never again, because i did it once and this is a huge and boring amount of work which brings us near to nothing (given that there are huge sppp problems, new chipsets, i4b does not work in -current due to architecture changes, etc, etc, etc.). In case you want to change log messages, please do some research, make a good proposal and after some discussion i'm happily expecting diffs ;-) hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis Tel +49 40 559747-70 HCS Hanseatischer Computerservice GmbH Fax +49 40 559747-77 Oldesloer Strasse 97-99 Mail hm [at] hcs.de 22457 Hamburg WWW http://www.hcs.de To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-isdn" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-isdn Thu Oct 7 1:17:11 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-isdn@freebsd.org Received: from MedIS.DE (medis33.medis.de [193.141.96.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 87F8A14D03 for ; Thu, 7 Oct 1999 01:17:01 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Christian.Wolf@medis.de) Received: from sun-chris.medis.de (sun-chris.medis.de [172.16.1.4]) by MedIS.DE (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id KAA09908 for ; Thu, 7 Oct 1999 10:16:00 +0200 (MET DST) Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1999 10:15:59 +0200 (MET DST) From: Christian Wolf To: isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Connecting isdn4linux to isdn4bsd with callback Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-isdn@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi! Does anyone tried connecting isdn4linux to isdn4bsd with callback, that means the linux box dials out to a FreeBSD box, which refused the call and dials back the linux box. I tried this (because some other people like to call my FreeBSD machine with a Linux machine), but had no success. The FreeBSD machine ,,bsdgate'' runs 3.1-RELEASE with i4b 0.83.0, but the problem is not new. The Linux machine runs a SuSe Linux 6.1. The FreeBSD machine is connected to a PBX (Siemens Hicom 300). I have no problems dialing in from my FreeBSD machine at home, only with Linux. What happens is, that the Linux machine dials out, the FreeBSD machine calls back and the connection is established for a few seconds (I can see the ,,login:'' prompt from the tellnet session). While the FreeBSD machine thinks the line is connected (if I read the log correctly), the Linux machine continues dialing in, because it thinks the line was disconnected. The Linux machine is configured to be called back. Are there any known problems between isdn4linux and isdn4bsd? Did anyone else had success isdn4bsd calling back isdn4linux? I'm using allscreens_flags="132x60" in /etc/rc.conf but the vty gets switched after isdnd is started, so isdnd didn't know about the new dimensions of the screen. Bye, Alexander. -- Hark! Since i moved my ISDN i4b-operated equipment to this PBX (which now shuts Layer 1 properly down when noone is using the bus) i've seen the above described effect once. It was a 3.2-STABLE system with a Teles 16.3 and i also had to reboot to recover from this. This seems to be a bug in i4b. I doubt i'll currently get the time and silence necessary to debug this. hellmuth -- Hellmuth Michaelis hm@kts.org Hamburg, Europe We all live in a yellow subroutine, yellow subroutine, yellow subroutine ... [.....] There seems to be a fairly nasty problem with PPPoISDN, but as lots of people haven't screamed about it, I can only assume that there's something funny going on... perhaps with the exchange. From what I can tell, for both myself and Joe Karthauser (cc'd) i4b will never clear a call correctly. This fact is hidden under normal circumstances when ppp agrees with the peer that the link is coming down - the peer clears the call. I'm fairly sure that this is a hardware thing. The easiest way to reproduce the problem is to bring up both channels with MP ppp and then ``down'' one of them. From then on, you'll get a ``cause 34'' when trying to bring up the second link, meaning that the exchange says there's no circuit. When this happens you can prove that the second circuit is still actually active by examining the state of the peer (it still thinks both links are up). This is fairly obvious with a ping from the local side - every second packet is lost. I've had some nasty problems on my test box over the last few weeks and have been suffering multiple crashes per day, so I haven't been able to work at this. The box has been up for several hours now - with all four disks reformatted, a complete memory replacement and some adjusted memory timings..... it seems to be stable at last. My next step is to set up a local circuit (calling myself) to see if the line gets jammed ``up'' even after a ``close'' (agreed link closure). However, in both my case and Joes, either restarting isdnd (kill and restart rather than a HUP) or pulling the cable out of the wall will clear all calls - so maybe our problems are different ! Anyway, don't feel alone... there's something spooky happening ! Cheers. -- Brian Don't _EVER_ lose your sense of humour !
