You can only run it from the directory it exists in, or the shell script won't be able to find the class file properly. You can code the path in, and then pmcommand could be called from any directory. Perhaps you could update the FreeBSD-Java web page to reflect that it _only_ works for AOUT FreeBSD, then? Currently, the web page says "Note, versions of FreeBSD prior to 2.2 (such as FreeBSD 2.1.5) are not supported." It might be better to say something like: Note, versions of FreeBSD prior to 2.2 (such as FreeBSD 2.1.5) are not supported. Also, versions more recent than 3.0-RELEASE will only work if AOUT backward compatibility is available. Ciao, Sheldon. Because that'd be untrue. I run current, which is elf, and elf kernel, and my jdk (aout) runs fine. Don't try to spread FUD because it's not perfect. The latest jdk sources are available, it's not yet built for FreeBSD yet is all. If you want to help, great, but don't make it worse than it is. I do a lot of java for my classwork here at UMD, and our jdk is just fine, thank you. BTW, the java executable is statically linked. I guess my suggestion came more out of frustration than the desire for the web page to be accurate. Sorry. > The latest jdk sources are available, it's not yet built for > FreeBSD yet is all. Hmmm, somehow I fell under the illusion that a license was required to work with the source for the kit. As I see it, once I've got the source, all I need to do is tinker with it until it works with an ELF lesstiff. > If you want to help, great, but don't make it worse than it is. It's only statically linked against the Motif library, but the C library, java libraries, and all the X libraries are dynamically compiled in. The trick is this; any time you select a link and get exactly the same page you've just been viewing, hit reload. That'll bring up the page that should have come up when you selected the hyperlink. If I remember correctly, you have to do that for the last 3 pages before you're offered the tarball. Also, I had no luck with the US-East servers. US-West worked for me. You'd think a bunch of folks touting a platform-independant solution would get _this_ right at least. And believe me, I tried a _wide_ selection of browsers and platforms. :-) Ciao, Sheldon. Since the 'java compiler' is written in Java, this is pretty much a requirement. It's kind of like how do you build a C compiler w/out a C-compiler? > I presume the jdk out of the ports tree will suffice for this purpose? ???? That is what they claim, for version 0.45, that it's neither a subset nor a superset ... it seems, in fact, to be more picky about syntax and errors than javac is. This is true, but it is not David and Phillipe's (sp?) attempt to be more picky than javac. For example, I sent in a bug report for 0.44 that caused them to 'unfix' a change they made due to their reading of the specification differently than javac. Apparently (since it works like javac again in 0.45) they must feel that javac implementation is 'correct'. When it's obvious that jikes is correct and javac isn't (based on reading the specification), or when they are unsure which of the two is correct, they send email to Sun for enlightenment. Apparently javac has been modified from a couple of these emails. :) My only fear is that jikes will become less useful as a 'java' compiler. Because it is open-source, there have already been a number of requests to 'extend' Java language with new (useful) features. Unfortunately, as we've seen with gcc, the resulting 'language' is no longer 'C', and is instead 'Gnu-C'. Fortunately, the IBM guys have been good about rejecting such changes, but I think it's only a matter of time before it diverges into a new language. The page www.freebsd.org/java/ claims that "These releases are compiled against a Motif library that is permissible to distribute with JDK." My question: Where is this mythical Motif library? The text above includes a link to XiG's web site which shows a very pretty picture of a box for sale, but I was hoping to not have to purchase said box. I successfully used an earlier port of the JDK to FreeBSD, but I believe that earlier port (1.0.2) had been statically linked against the Motif libraries. - Tim Kientzle P.S. I apologize if this has been discussed a million times; I don't subscribe to this mailing list, and haven't seen this problem mentioned on the newsgroup.
