As the author of that comment in the xe driver I should probably step in here. I could be wrong, but I suspect you'll be SOL finding a 100Mbit PCMCIA card that gives anything approaching 100Mbit performance. CardBus would be another story, but support for that is still limited. The 10/100 PCMCIA cards are nice, in that they'll attach to a mixed or 100Mbit-only network, and give you a bit of extra bandwidth. I wouldn't expect much more than that though. I'm happy to be corrected on this -- anyone out there have experience with any other such cards? Of course, I don't expect 11.8 MBytes/sec as I get when two Intel Etherexpress PCI cards are talking to each other on FreeBSD :-). But I was quite disappointed of the 1.2MB/sec with PCMCIA. However, in the meantime I managed to test the same machine under Crap95 and got similar results. It really seems to be some hardware limit. I also got an Intel Etherexpress 100MBit ISA (yes, ISA) and this one does about 4-5 MBytes/sec under Crap95. Someone else told me that PCMCIA would be faster than ISA so I expected a bit more... > > I'm happy to be corrected on this -- anyone out there have experience with > any other such cards? If the only computers on the LAN are the FreeBSD server (originally running 3.2-STABLE, now upgraded to 3.3-RC with the same problem), then I can't ping or connect to the FreeBSD box. Sometimes after many minutes, the connection mysteriously comes up, but this is rare. However, if there's another machine on the LAN (in particular, if I boot up my Linux desktop), everything starts working immediately. I've tried to run a packet sniffer to see what's going on, but I can't run anything on the FreeBSD box (I tried sniffit, but it dumped core immediately, perhaps an incompatibility with natd, dhcpd, or the DE21140 chipset Ethernet card?). If I run sniffit on Linux, then everything seems normal, but as I've mentioned, the mere presence of Linux on the LAN causes everything to work anyway. I've looked for info on the Dell site, the 3Com site, and the Microsoft site, but to no avail. If this is a bug on the laptop end, then it only seems to affect FreeBSD. Any info you can give on how to fix this, or how to produce more debugging info, would be greatly appreciated. TIA! Is it IBM Smart Card adapter? It was worked fine early PAO, and also should work with PAO2 or PAO3, but may not work with out PAO. It has KING PCIC whose power control is slight differnt than other PCICs. I heard many ISA-PCMCIA adapters works fine with PAO. I think some of them would work on 3.3-RC with out PAO. On most of my machines, I typically try to keep up with -STABLE; it'd be really nice if I could use the stock -STABLE on the Tecra, but I didn't even try it yet. Before I wipe the thing clean and start over, can anyone tell me if they've had success installing 3.2 on a Tecra 8000? Specifically, I need to be able to have apm work in a reasonable fashion (i.e. sleep/return from sleep), and I would also really really like to have the pccardd working. Both of these seem to work fine with my current installation, but if I can avoid a separate branch, I'd appreciate it. Anyone out there have experience with the Tecra 8000? It'd be great to hear someone else's experiences. My entire company uses them, and a lot of people would like to run FreeBSD but haven't bothered yet. If I can work out the quirks for myself, I can make it much easier on them, too. Thanks! --Paul L. Dirk-Willem van Gulik (dirkx@webweaving.org) was even more enthusiastic, noting that "Basically everything works; apm, sound, screen, mice, suspend, hibernate, whatever. Except one niggle; controlling the sound from your modem. There is none. But in windows you can control it. USB starts to work from 3.2/current onwards." this largely reflects my experience to date, though, at least under 3.3, USB doesn't work: uhci0: rev 0x01 int d irq 255 on pci0.7.2 create_intr: requested irq255 too high, limit is 15 usb0: could not map irq is this a problem w/ 3.3, or w/ the USB support in general? if anyone else is toying w/ one of these, i'd also like to point out that the PSM_HOOKAPM and PSM_RESETAFTERSUSPEND options are a GOOD idea if you plan on using the touchpad after suspending ;) pcmcia support seems a tad flaky, though i suspect this might have something to do w/ my choice of versions (3.3 seems to have issues in this realm -- though it's all ok as long as i don't attempt a hot-swap). thanks for any help, kieran To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-mobile" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-mobile Thu Sep 16 14:35:19 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from herring.nlsystems.com (nlsys.demon.co.uk [158.152.125.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1076015482 for ; Thu, 16 Sep 1999 14:35:13 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from dfr@nlsystems.com) Received: from salmon.nlsystems.com (salmon.nlsystems.com [10.0.0.3]) by herring.nlsystems.com (8.9.3/8.8.8) with ESMTP id WAA21559; Thu, 16 Sep 1999 22:21:27 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from dfr@nlsystems.com) Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 22:21:26 +0100 (BST) From: Doug Rabson To: "Paul M. Occasionally I have to remove my ether card and put it back after suspending without a card in and putting the card in while it is suspended. options PCIC_RESUME_RESET # reset after resume seems to help. as soon as 3.3 PAO is out, I'll be playing with that. In general this is caused by the BIOS being configured wrong, but I can't remember whether there was another problem with this system. And I can't remember whether I've seen any USB devices attached to it. I'll have a look whether I can borrow his this weekend. Best bet: switch off USB keyboard support in the BIOS and switch on USB conroller (if that is at all switchable). Let me/us know whether that worked for you. I had a few problems with my pcmcia card at the beginning (pcmcia freezing completely), but can't reproduce them now. The only thing i sometimes get, is that an insertion event is lost. I don't use any cardbus cards with it and the mixer support for the sound hardware doesn't work correctly. Apart from that everything seems to work fine. X works very nicely on the panel and I did try it on a monitor once but wasn't able to make it use a decent refresh rate. The panel is clearer anyway :-). Hot-swapping drives and hot-docking is not supported. > > How about floppy drive access? (Mine only recognizes the external floppy > if it's connected at boot). I think this is a hardware limitation. I seem to remember in the instructions that you should not connect the floppy when the machine is switched on. When the floppy is plugged in (either in the external case or in the hot-swap bay, it works very well. > > I think, if I don't hear from anyone otherwise, I will attempt to run > a stock 3.3-STABLE kernel and userland on it, and see what happens. I'd submit it as a PR, but I'm not at all sure I'm doing the right thing to detect it. The gist of the patch: 1) Reworked the probe routine to avoid having to set a flag to find my card, mostly on account of I couldn't figure out how to set the flag. This is the "I'm probably doing this wrong" part. 2) Addition of the 574B's product ID. 3) Output of some more useful info when booting verbosely. You need to buy the right cable and potentially get a flash upgrade for the Xircom's BIOS. The cable has a E2PROM in it to identify to the card what the other end is plugged into. Unfortunately, to get access to the other end of the serial link (be it ISDN/GSM etc) you need to issue some Xircom AT commands to the normal modem. If we hassle Xircom enough they might release them.... The Ethernet stuff needs Scott's xe driver. There is a bug with reinsertion of the ether card not DTRT somewhere. It seems that the silicon revision is being detected incorrectly so unless Xircom have morphing ICs we've got some sort of bug that gets the card confused. > Sorry if these are FAQs, I just recently got into this laptop game.
