X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 3.2-STABLE Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, I sum up my problem and his solution, maybe it'll help someone in the future. Few weeks ago i wanted to make run my Miro PC/TV (bt848, 2 crystals, Philips Pal/Secam tuner) on my freebsd box. so i tune my kernel: device bktr0 options OVERRIDE_TUNER=6 # Philips Secam # i2c controller smbus0 device smb0 at smbus? controller iicbus0 controller iicbb0 device ic0 at iicbus? device iic0 at iicbus? device iicsmb0 at iicbus? Well all is detected at boot. So il configure fxtv with the good frequencies. I launch fxtv, surprise: only distorded images :(( So i try all configurations in the kernel, but no way... After search, and contacts on french mailing-lists and newsgroup: i release that i'm not alone with these pb! Secam tuner seems not work with freebsd's bt848 drivers... So i posted on freebsd-question and Juha Nurmela (thanks to him) give me the solution: > Find this line on brooktree848.c > > { 0xa0, 0x90, 0x30,0xa4 } }, /* the band-switch values */ > > and try changing to > > { 0xa7, 0x97, 0x37,0xa4 } }, /* the band-switch values */ > > Note that there are multiple such lines, use the one > You selected. I had the same pb with my second tv card : Guillemot Maxi TV Pci2 (bt878, one cristal, Philips Pal/Secam tuner) and it runs with the source change. The card is detected as a FlyVideo by the kernel (i use last driver). All is good but when i switch channels i hear bad switching noise... I try to change the CARD_FLYVIDEO record with the help of the bttv.c but without good result... Marc Sorry for my bad english :( To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sun Aug 15 8:20:40 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from dorifer.heim3.tu-clausthal.de (dorifer.heim3.tu-clausthal.de [139.174.243.252]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DFB8014E4A for ; Sun, 15 Aug 1999 08:20:34 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from olli@dorifer.heim3.tu-clausthal.de) Received: (from olli@localhost) by dorifer.heim3.tu-clausthal.de (8.8.8/8.8.8) id RAA01589 for freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG; Sun, 15 Aug 1999 17:20:56 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from olli) Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 17:20:56 +0200 (CEST) From: Oliver Fromme Message-Id: <199908151520.RAA01589@dorifer.heim3.tu-clausthal.de> To: freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: PCI/On-Board Sound? Every attempt to get an accelerated XFree86 running ended fruitless (and got me lots of crashes). While the emulation itself seems to work very good, it is hard to get accustomed to that bunch of library versions and where they are supposed to reside. After wasting most of this Sunday, I am also unsure if it is possible to get away with a Linux glx aware Mesa lib and FreeBSD XFree86 SVGA server + FreeBSD glx module or if that trio has to be pure Linux. Firstly, the rpm stuff can be accessed through either of the ports rpm or rpm2cpio. Secondly, accelerated XFree86 glx can be done by downloading XFree86 3.3.4 (I assume from earlier messages that you're using a TNT card?) compiling it up and installing the XF86_SVGA server. Download the glx sources from the TNT website and follow the instructions contained within the README. You'll also need to copy the libGL.so.1.0 to libMesaGL.so.14 and libMesaGL.so.13.6, depending on what ports you have lying around. This should enable native acceleration for FreeBSD GL using programs. Thirdly, the dreaded Q* apps. Get hold of the Linux rpm appropriate to the version of libc that your q* app uses, and copy it over the top of the libGL stuff within the q* directory. You'll probably have to mess around with links and stuff. I have a bunch of wrapper shell scripts that I use for glqwcl.glx, quake2 & q3test. All they do is recreate the q* directory hierarchy and symlink to the relevant files. Contact me if you're interested. Stephen -- The views expressed above are not those of PGS Tensor. The thought of "stealing" /proc/meminfo from a Linux box had never even crossed my mind, that was a stroke of genius. I shall have to try it on my commercial copy of Myth2. The sound problem sounds interesting (no pun intended). What sound driver are you using? I happen to use the commercial OSS driver (http://www.opensound.com/), which some say does sound for Linux-emulated programs better than either of the FreeBSD ones. (in fact, my Linux RealPlayer runs better than it ever has, using OSS.) I'll give it a try with OSS and let you know. This seems like a good time to bring up something that I've been doing a little work on. I'm putting together a web site of "FreeBSD Application Notes." The basic idea being, to list all Linux/SCO/etc. software that will work with FreeBSD's binary compatibility, and what special steps (if any) are required to get the program up and running. I'm almost finished writing the appnote for Civilization: Call to Power (but haven't converted it to HTML yet), and I will write up your solution to Myth II shortly (giving you proper credit, of course). I really think that something like this would be very good for FreeBSD advocacy. For anyone that is curious, I have a first "rough cut" of this site (empahsis on the word "rough") up for your viewing pleasure. Go to http://www.Powered-By.AC/fbsd-appnotes/. Thanks for that hint. More thanks for reminding me that - the best way to learn how the emulation should work, is obviously to have a closer look at a running Linux system - preassumptions are evil (I indeed took the /proc/* for dynamic, fs-mapped stuff) > The sound is sometimes funny (sounds like the narrator is stuffed up with > phlegm) but in They use their own mpeg software player for the start sequence. The basic idea being, to list all Linux/SCO/etc. software that > will work with FreeBSD's binary compatibility, and what special steps (if > any) are required to get the program up and running. Things I like to know/see: 1. What principal Linux versions are there? I noticed at least three different Linux flavours, different in the sense that they need different binaries: a) libc based (e.g. ???) b) glibc 2.0 based (watch for "Red Hat 5", "RH5" hints) c) glibc 2.1 based (watch for "Red Hat 6", "RH6" hints) 2. rpm2pkg converter So far I am not happy with the rpm package manager, its man page lacks some decent examples to help to understand it's use. But why teach an old dog a new trick? As it seems to fullfil the same job as our pkg_* system, I bet that it should be possible to write a script that derives a FreeBSD port from a .rpm and then runs the usual targets to create a FreeBSD package. Anyone here interested in such a thing? 3. Maps So I am looking for that missing XYZ lib and managed to download a version (libc, glibc ..) that might run under the emulation. The problem I face now is, where I should install it in the compat tree. It would be very handy to have some directory/file listings for the major Linux flavours available, that tells me what libXYZ.major.minor will usually reside where. BTW the prefix elimination mechanism that tricks a Linux app into seeing e.g. the path /usr/compat/Linux/bin/bash as /bin/bash seems not to work accross symlinked paths (e.g. if /usr/compat/Linux/bin is symlinked to /tin/bin) 4. Version numbers It would be nice to know what system needs what shared lib version (libXY.so.Major.Minor) I know not better of the various FreeBSD libXY.so.Super versions, but this information is easy to find out by visiting the various FreeBSD releases/snapshots on ftp.freebsd.org. For a similiar approach I would need to know the main Linux servers (which I don't). 5. Caveat As it is nice to have Linux binaries running under FreeBSD, the existence of a good emulator has its dangers. It is likely that vendors will not go through the hassle of producing native FreeBSD versions anymore if the emulation is too good. This is what happened with OS/2 and its very good Windows emulation. I am grateful to Netscape, that they still produce FreeBSD binaries. Well, dump the card in your toilet and flush it :) The audio drivers in FreeBSD 3.x (both voxware and Luigi's new driver) treat the SB Pro 3.1 as a 16bit card. Unfortunately, the SB Pro 3.1 is an 8bit card. And that's what causes this (and a couple other) problems. Some applications (like mpg123) can be forced to use 8bit mode. These programs will work with a SB Pro if you set the appropriate flags. All other programs won't work correctly. I don't know if this behaviour is a bug or a feature. I'm afraid it's the latter - it may be neccessary to support all those cheap soundcards and their "SB Pro emulations" and/or legacy modes. /s/Udo (been there, done that, bought a used SB16) To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Fri Aug 20 12:53:52 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from msxsmtp1.novellus.com (msxsmtp1.Novellus.Com [198.211.186.81]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6256414DA2 for ; Fri, 20 Aug 1999 12:53:49 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from Thomas.Hentschel@NOVELLUS.com) Received: by msxsmtp1.novellus.com with Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) id ; Fri, 20 Aug 1999 12:51:45 -0700 Message-ID: From: "Hentschel, Thomas" To: alex Cc: multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: RE: this sucks Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 12:51:40 -0700 MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Check if dmesg | grep irq is of any help. looks like something else is using irq 5 (some 3com's 509's tend to do this, some of them also use the same mem address) -Th ---------- On Thu, 19 Aug 1999, alex wrote: * Alright, this is pissing me off. > > # grep pcm /sys/i386/conf/IDE > device pcm0 at isa? port 0x220 tty irq 5 drq 1 flags 0x0 > # cat /dev/sndstat > FreeBSD Audio Driver (981002) Aug 14 1999 14:06:00 > Installed devices: > pcm0: at 0x220 irq 5 dma 1:1 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sat Aug 21 9:55:54 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from sinfonix.rz.tu-clausthal.de (sinfonix.rz.tu-clausthal.de [139.174.2.33]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7AB1B14F64 for ; Sat, 21 Aug 1999 09:55:51 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from nordenholz@rz.tu-clausthal.de) Received: from troubadix.rz.tu-clausthal.de (IDENT:7BWBcdAN28+LB3xowLShHVaIC+vItIbd@troubadix.rz.tu-clausthal.de [139.174.2.23]) by sinfonix.rz.tu-clausthal.de (8.9.0/8.9.0) with ESMTP id SAA07945 for ; Sat, 21 Aug 1999 18:54:18 +0200 (MET DST) From: Thiemo Nordenholz Received: (from svtn@localhost) by troubadix.rz.tu-clausthal.de (8.9.0/8.9.0) id SAA26251 for freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org; Sat, 21 Aug 1999 18:54:16 +0200 (MET DST) Message-Id: <199908211654.SAA26251@troubadix.rz.tu-clausthal.de> Subject: Flashpix format software?
