And now I succeeded. Previously I only tried to adjust th recording signal using the line fader. I never touched the rec fader. Today I did - and it worked. So for recording from the PCI 128 with ES1371 and Russels driver and using DAP, the line fader only affects the sound output volume (during recording). The recording volume is defined by the rec fader and can be adjusted to a useful range (in my case) this way. The result is not overwhelming, but a little better than with the SB 16. More open and more direct, I think, I also hear a little bit more noise. May be, the SB 16 cuts a bit from the heights. So it seems, it was not a problem of the driver nor of DAP but of the bad operator (me). :-) The other thing: Some days ago, I mentioned some bad sound effects in loud parts of the piece. Reducing the mixer volume and increasing my active speakers' volume yielded an acceptable sound quality. Seems, that the line output signal is very high. May be it can even drive a small passive speaker. (I am almost shure, I choosed un-amplified "line signal" on the card.) At this moment, everything seems acceptable for me. I will try to record from analog source within the next weeks. Let's see ... Many thanks! I want to encode 16-bit mono/stereo audio (at different samplerates) on the fly using Lame (http://www.sulaco.org/mp3/). Lame can read raw PCM data from standard input and save as an MP3 file. However, running lame [options] < /dev/audio isn't going to work, because I'll need to issue the correct ioctls to the sound device. I'm thinking of writing a front-end C program which does: - reads cmd-line args, works out sound format required - opens /dev/audio - issues appropriate ioctl()s to /dev/audio - closes file descriptor 0 - dup2()s /dev/audio down to file descriptor 0 - closes /dev/audio - execs Lame with the original cmd-line args However, I'm having a damn hard time trying to find the correct ioctls to issue to /dev/audio, or even if I should be using /dev/dsp instead. I'm running FreeBSD-3.2 with the following kernel options: # css: Crystal Sound System (CSS 423x PnP) controller snd0 device css0 at isa? port 0x534 irq 5 drq 1 flags 0x08 vector adintr and the device works fine. Could somebody point me at the right place to find the right ioctls to set up: sample rate, stereo/mono etc. I've found machine/sound.h to be extremely confusing. Many thanks in advance! If I compile vat to open /tmp/audio (and remove all sound ioctl and non-blocking stuff) instead of having it open /dev/audio, then run a "cat /tmp/audio > /dev/audio", the sound comes ok. On the other hand, if I replace the code in vat with a popen("cat > /dev/audio") and a call fileno() to get the fd, vat still doesn't work (only very random fractions of sound). Any ideas what might be wrong? In other cases, the DMA size needs to be reset in the handler. I have no idea if that has anything to do with it. It does this by setting write combining on the system heap. This assumes that you've set aside some memory for GLX by compiling a kernel with the MAXMEM option (which, if you care about mga 3D performance, you'll do). I'm pretty sure this only affects the Matrox cards. As far as I know the code for the NVidea cards doesn't use system heap. Also, this will probably only work on systems with a single Pentium Pro/II/III, Celeron, or (I think) Athlon processor. I don't think it works on the K6 series. Q3 timedemo, Before: DEMO001: 1346 frames, 66.7 seconds: 20.2 fps DEMO002: 1399 frames, 73.3 seconds: 19.1 fps Q3 timedemo, After: DEMO001: 1346 frames, 57.9 seconds: 23.3 fps DEMO002: 1399 frames, 62.4 seconds: 22.4 fps The source for the kernel module is at http://sea-to-sky.net/~sreid/mtrrhack.tar.gz (1281 bytes) Beware, it doesn't have a user interface. You'll have to hand-edit the .c file and adjust things in the mtrr_settings struct for your system. It's currently set for my system, which is 64 MB total with the top 8 MB set aside for GLX (options "MAXMEM=(56*1024)" in my kernel config, plus relevant stuff in my glx.conf). Edit the .c file, type "make", then (as root) "kldload ./mtrrhack.ko". You can immediately "kldunload mtrrhack" if you want; the MTRRs will remain set. If you can't figure this out for yourself, email me with your memory configuration and I'll send you the required changes in the .c file. This module only sets the MTRRs for one CPU, which will very likely cause problems if you try to use it on an SMP machine. It also doesn't flush the caches or do other cleanup while messing with the MTRRs, but this seems to be okay because (if you edited the .c file properly) the memory used by the OS is set write-back both before and after the MTRRs are changed. Technical trivia: This program sets the variable-range MTRRs, not to be confused with the fixed-range MTRRs set by "fastvid" (and now handled by the BIOS). It's usually written on the cover somewhere. If the latter, then you need a real CD-i player. If they're VideoCDs, you can use tosha (from the ports) to read the VCD track(s) and pipe them into MpegTV. Something like this works for: tosha -t2- -o - | mtvp -z /dev/stdin You'll need a SCSI CD-ROM drive, though. First, the preliminary stuff: # uname -a FreeBSD cx344940-a.meta1.la.home.com 3.3-STABLE FreeBSD 3.3-STABLE #0: Mon Nov 29 19:29:19 CST 1999 conrads@cx344940-a.meta1.la.home.com:/usr/src/sys/compile/MYKERNEL i386 Now, for the details: I just upgraded my CD-ROM drive to an Acer 640-P (50x max). It works fine with cdcontrol, wmcdplay and xmms (using libcdaudio.so), and xmcd and cda can read the disc table of contents and do a CDDB lookup just fine, BUT...it won't play any tracks (in xmcd or cda)! I keep getting the error: CD audio: ioctl error on /dev/racd0c: cmd=CDIOCPLAYMSF errno=5 I've configured and reconfigured the drive using the xmcd config.sh script, and still can't get past this. Other players work fine, as mentioned above, but I *really* want to get xmcd working, as I like it's CDDB facility very, very much. I've already done a mailing list archive search, but didn't turn up anything useful. I remember a long, long time ago, someone posted some kernel patches to work around this error, but I've long since misplaced them. If anyone still has these, or could conjure something up, I'd be *extremely* grateful. If anyone wants to see the -debug output from xmcd, I'll be happy to provide it. Please, please, someone out there must know how to solve this! :-) Thanks! -- Conrad Sabatier http://members.home.net/conrads/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sat Dec 4 18:51:30 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mail1.lig.bellsouth.net (mail1.lig.bellsouth.net [205.152.0.55]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 028F11521D; Sat, 4 Dec 1999 18:51:24 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from gljohns@bellsouth.net) Received: from gforce.johnson.home (host-216-76-172-84.msy.bellsouth.net [216.76.172.84]) by mail1.lig.bellsouth.net (3.3.5alt/0.75.2) with ESMTP id VAA23467; Sat, 4 Dec 1999 21:52:16 -0500 (EST) Received: (from glenn@localhost) by gforce.johnson.home (8.9.3/8.9.3) id UAA26630; Sat, 4 Dec 1999 20:50:51 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from glenn) From: Glenn Johnson Date: Sat, 4 Dec 1999 20:50:21 -0600 To: Conrad Sabatier Cc: questions@FreeBSD.ORG, multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG, xmcd@amb.org Subject: Re: Help needed for ioctl error in xmcd/cda with IDE CD-ROM Message-ID: <19991204205021.A89859@gforce.johnson.home> References: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii X-Mailer: Mutt 1.0i In-Reply-To: ; from conrads@home.com on Sat, Dec 04, 1999 at 07:36:28PM -0600 Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On Sat, Dec 04, 1999 at 07:36:28PM -0600, Conrad Sabatier wrote: > I just upgraded my CD-ROM drive to an Acer 640-P (50x max). I have a Hi-Val 48x CD-ROM drive that exhibits the same behavior. Interestingly, kscd (KDE) has the same problem but gtcd (GNOME) does not. With kscd I get the following appearing on the xconsole, "acd0: read_toc failed". The device is correctly set for /dev/racd0c so this seems like an odd message. With xmcd I get the same error as you reported. I can also add that xcd works but xcd does not do CDDB lookups. My old 4x CD-ROM works fine. -- Glenn Johnson gljohns@bellsouth.net To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-multimedia" in the body of the message From owner-freebsd-multimedia Sat Dec 4 19: 1:27 1999 Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from cx344940-a.meta1.la.home.com (cx344940-a.meta1.la.home.com [24.6.21.74]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 07831153CF; Sat, 4 Dec 1999 19:01:12 -0800 (PST) (envelope-from conrads@cx344940-a.meta1.la.home.com) Received: (from conrads@localhost) by cx344940-a.meta1.la.home.com (8.9.3/8.9.2) id VAA83854; Sat, 4 Dec 1999 21:00:30 -0600 (CST) (envelope-from conrads) Message-ID: X-Mailer: XFMail 1.4.0 on FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit MIME-Version: 1.0 In-Reply-To: <19991204205021.A89859@gforce.johnson.home> Date: Sat, 04 Dec 1999 21:00:30 -0600 (CST) Organization: @Home Network From: Conrad Sabatier To: Glenn Johnson Subject: Re: Help needed for ioctl error in xmcd/cda with IDE CD-ROM Cc: questions@FreeBSD.ORG, multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG, xmcd@amb.org Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org On 05-Dec-99 Glenn Johnson wrote: > > Unfortunately I can not help you but I wanted to add another data > point for someone who might be able to.
